FPL experts’ ULTIMATE squad for opening Gameweeks

Some of the world's best managers come together to pick the best 15 players to start the season

Some of the world's top Fantasy Premier League managers combine to pick the ultimate 15-man squad ahead of the Gameweek 1 deadline on Friday 21 August at 18:30 BST.

The experts have opted for a pair of rotating £4.5m goalkeepers in Antonin Kinsky and Bart Verbruggen. The Spurs and Brighton goalkeepers can be rotated so that managers always have a home fixture.

None of the more expensive defenders in the game make the experts' squad, with budget-friendly options preferred.

Arsenal's Riccardo Calafiori (£5.5m) is the most expensive defender in this squad after his goal in the FA Community Shield.

FPL Gameweek 1 Stats: Ownership, Captaincy & Chips

The first deadline of the 2026/27 Fantasy Premier League season has passed—and the opening FPL template has finally been revealed.

Did FPL managers prefer Erling Haaland or Bruno Fernandes with the captain's armband?

And how many decided to attack Gameweek 1 with an early chip?

Using data from Fantasy Football Fix's FPL Statistics tool and Insight Live tool, we have analysed the key FPL Gameweek 1 statistics following Friday's deadline.

A total of 8,945,344 managers had registered an FPL team when the Gameweek 1 deadline passed.

That is down from approximately 9.5 million managers at the beginning of last season, a difference of around 555,000 teams.

FPL 2026-27 Eight players who could help you win this year, including Wirtz, Calvert-Lewin, Joao Pedro and Gross

Have you settled on your Fantasy Premier League team yet, or are you still at the tinkering stage?

Either way you may want to consider one of these players in your team, according to our FPL experts.

Here are the eight players – aside from the obvious premium picks such as Bruno Fernandes and Erling Haaland – we think can help you have a successful season.

You can join the BBC Sport League on the official Fantasy Premier League game using the code bbcfpl – or by clicking this link, external.

Wirtz at £7.5m with around 14% ownership looks like one of the better mid-priced differentials available right now. While nearly half the game has locked in Dominik Szoboszlai, far fewer managers are backing the German, which creates useful rank upside if he delivers.

'National tragedy': Experts warn of concerning NAPLAN knowledge gaps

NAPLAN test results for years 3, 5, 7 and 9 show some persistent gaps in students' literacy and numeracy proficiency. (ABC News)

Annual National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) test scores have been released after 1.2 million students in years 3, 5, 7 and 9 sat the test in March.

The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) said the results showed a slight improvement in numeracy scores in years 5, 7 and 9.

Individual students should have already received their scores, with school results to be released toward the end of the year.

One-third of Australian students are not meeting "challenging but reasonable" expectations in literacy and numeracy in what experts are warning is "stagnant" underperformance.

Reading and writing scores are going backwards for almost every age group in Australia’s national standardised school tests, with one in three students still failing to meet Naplan benchmarks.

This year’s tests were taken in March by 1.2 million students across years 3, 5, 7 and 9 to measure literacy and numeracy proficiency, with results released on Wednesday by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (Acara).

Participation was down compared with last year due to industrial action in Tasmania and flooding in the Northern Territory, which has led Acara to not report Tasmanian state-level results as it lagged “far below” the body’s data standards for accurate reporting.

A third of students fail to hit NAPLAN benchmarks

One in three Australian students are failing to meet national numeracy and literacy benchmarks, but NAPLAN data shows Victorian schools are outperforming those in other states.

Nationwide NAPLAN results released on Wednesday show little or no improvement on last year, with large numbers of children still struggling with the basics of learning, despite a federal push to reshape how reading and maths are taught and tested.

The results of tests sat by more than 1.2 million children around the nation in March show nearly 30 per cent were “not achieving the learning outcomes that are expected” or “working towards expectations” in numeracy, reading, writing and spelling. More than 40 per cent of participants did not reach benchmarks in grammar.

'Unfounded and premature': Why experts say parents shouldn't panic about screen time

SBS acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of Country and their connections and continuous care for the skies, lands and waterways throughout Australia.

Concerns about children and screen use may be overblown, new research suggests, with experts saying worries about an 'iPad baby' generation may be "premature".

A new international study, based on data from over 3,000 children, found no link between screen use duration and developmental difficulties at ages five or 10.

Researchers in the UK spoke with the families of children back in 2009 and 2010 and followed their development for the subsequent 10 years.

Over that time, there has been some criticism and debate about the role of technology in parenting, and whether young people born in the 21st century will be a screen-addicted generation.

New Research Suggests There May Be Two Ages When Screen Time Matters Most

I was scrolling Instagram the other day and another parenting influencer was shaming parents for giving their kids access to screens. They pointed to studies and research proving why this is bad. They’re not wrong. If you’re a parent, you’ve heard a version of the same advice dozens of times: Limit screen time. Easier said than done.

Whether it’s a video that buys you enough time to make dinner, an educational app during a long car ride, or a movie that helps everyone survive a rainy Saturday, screens have become part of modern family life. And while parents often worry they’re somehow “ruining” their kids every time they hand over a tablet, experts say the reality is much more nuanced than that.

A New Study of Screen Time And Child Development Has Some Unexpected Findings

Digital screens are now deeply embedded in our lives, with children getting access to them at earlier and earlier ages – but is this increasing screen time actually affecting their health?

The science is more mixed than you might expect, with some digital device studies raising concerns and others suggesting there's no real relationship between time in front of a screen and mental or physical problems.

In a new paper published in JAMA Network Open, researchers from the University of Edinburgh and Imperial College London analyzed data from a cohort of 3,786 children in the Growing Up in Scotland longitudinal research study.
