Alysa Liu Explains How She Got Her "Smiley" Frenulum Piercing: "I Did It Myself"

You may have noticed the Team USA figure skater sporting some mouth jewelry when she smiles.

Team USA figure skater Alysa Liu is making waves at the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics after finishing third in the women's short program on February 17, and earlier earning a gold medal at the team event.

Her breezy, stunning short program performance will endure as one of the Winter Olympics' most magical moments — but aside from her skills on the ice, fans also want to know more about her teeth, as they've noticed some metal whenever she flashes her bright smile.

How Alysa Liu Became a 2026 Olympics Style Icon—Including Piercing Her Own Frenulum

Team USA figure skater Alysa Liu has not only captivated fans at the 2026 Olympics with her skating abilities, but also with her style choices, including her upper gum piercing and striped hairstyle.

If trendsetting was an Olympic sport, Alysa Liu would take home the gold.

Indeed, the Team USA figure skater has not only made her mark on the ice at the 2026 Milano Cortina Olympics, but also in the style department with her unique way of expressing herself.

“Someone called my style ‘alternative’ and I’d agree with that,” Alysa explained in an interview with Milwaukee, Wisc., NBC affiliate TMJ4 News on Jan. 26. “I love fashion a lot.”

Olympic skater Alyssa Liu’s ‘smiley’ piercing may look cool – but the trend poses serious health risks

After winning a gold medal at the 2026 Winter Olympics, photographers zeroed in on U.S. figure skater Alyssa Liu’s teeth – and the silver spikes that appeared to hover over them.

The 20-year-old athlete, from California, has what’s called a frenulum or “smiley” piercing, one that pierces the skin connecting the gums to the upper lip.

Liu did the piercing herself, she explained in an interview before the games.

But while the body jewelry may look cool, experts warn getting these piercings come with a risk of infection and can damage oral health.

Mouth piercings are particularly risky because of the millions of bacteria that live in our mouths, according to Colgate. “There's a greater risk of infection when you pierce the inside of your mouth versus getting your ears pierced because of the bacteria,” the mouth care brand says.

Renato Moicano explains why ‘it’s impossible’ for Paddy Pimblett to beat Ilia Topuria

Pimblett will compete for an interim title in the main event of UFC 324

Paddy Pimblett and Ilia Topuria have had a beef since 2022, when the now UFC lightweight champion took offense at online comments regarding the Georgia-Russia war. They got physical prior to that year’s UFC London show, and it has escalated since.

Pimblett has the chance to win the interim title at UFC 324, when he faces off with Justin Gaethje on Jan. 24 in Las Vegas, and it could lead to a unification bout with Topuria later in 2026.

However, fellow lightweight contender Renato Moicano doesn’t give Pimblett much of a chance at beating the Georgian-Spanish star.

Paddy Pimblett vs Justin Gaethje: UFC 324 – Pimblett says Ilia Topuria could be stripped of title

The UFC should strip Ilia Topuria of his lightweight title if he fails to return to action by July, says Paddy Pimblett.

Topuria is on hiatus from the sport as he deals with personal issues following his divorce, and Pimblett and Justin Gaethje will contest the interim title in his absence on Saturday in Las Vegas.

Tom Aspinall waited 19 months to be upgraded from interim heavyweight champion as Jon Jones toyed with the idea of retirement last year, but Pimblett said he will not be in the same situation as his fellow Briton should he become interim champion.

"Ilia isn't going to get the same breathing space as Jon Jones," Pimblett told BBC Sport.

Paddy Pimblett insisted that the crowd's reaction irked Justin Gaethje when they went face-to-face for the final time before their UFC 324 fight.

Pimblett (23-3) and Gaethje (26-5) will vie for the UFC interim lightweight championship on Saturday night in Las Vegas.

It is a chance for Liverpool's Pimblett to become the fourth Brit to hold a variation of UFC gold, whereas veteran Gaethje has conceded this will be his last chance to become a champion unless he prevails.

‘Going to dogwalk this English f***’: Rising superstar accused of ‘disrespecting’ legends

Paddy Pimblett suddenly stands accused of disrespecting the UFC’s modern greatest – and for that the famed Scouser and his signature blond mop are set to be “dogwalked” through five brutal rounds in Las Vegas this Sunday.

Or at least this is the sobering message from real life American Psycho Justin Gaethje, who is vowing to end all Paddy hype inside the Octagon, stressing: “I’m going to dogwalk this English f***, you watch”.

Djokovic explains his exit from the PTPA: “My name was being overused”

MELBOURNE – Novak Djokovic laid out the reasons behind his decision to step away from the players’ union he helped create.

“I felt my name was being overused. Whenever people think about the PTPA, they think it’s my organization, and that was wrong from the very beginning,” explained the 10-time Australian Open champion ahead of his 21st appearance at the tournament.

“I didn’t like the direction the leadership was taking with the PTPA, and that’s why I decided to step out,” he confessed.

Djokovic founded the Professional Tennis Players Association in 2020 alongside Canadian player Vasek Pospisil. The goal was to shake up the sport by taking power away from organizations such as the ATP (men’s tour), the WTA (women’s tour), the ITF (International Tennis Federation) and the Grand Slams, and handing it to the players.

Novak Djokovic Reveals Reasons For PTPA Exit, Still Driven For 25th Grand Slam Title

Novak Djokovic has revealed it was hard to leave the PTPA but believes it was the right decision as he now turns his attention towards a 25th Grand Slam title in Melbourne.

It’s been an eventful year for the 24-time Grand Slam champion without even stepping onto court for a competitive match.

Apart from Djokovic’s straight sets win over Frances Tiafoe at an exhibition match on Rod Laver Arena, the Serb has not had any competitive tournaments before the first Grand Slam of the year.

Despite that Djokovic is in high spirits as he bids for an eleventh title in Melbourne, “Well, happy new year to everyone. It’s great to be back another time,” Djokovic started his press conference by saying.

John McEnroe reaches worrying verdict on state of tennis after Novak Djokovic announcement

Tennis legend John McEnroe has thrown his support behind Novak Djokovic's efforts to establish the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA), despite fierce resistance from fellow icons Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Djokovic recently announced he has stepped away from the organization he co-created with Vasek Pospisil back in September 2020.

The PTPA emerged as a breakaway union aimed at championing the rights of lower-ranked players. The group even took legal action against the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and Women's Tennis Association (WTA) tours last year. Djokovic's organization accused the major tennis governing bodies of engaging in "anti-competitive practices" and showing "a blatant disregard for player welfare."
