Bijan Robinson closing in on Falcons history

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — Running back Bijan Robinson is on pace to finish with more scrimmage yards in a single season than any player in Atlanta Falcons history.

With two games remaining on the Falcons' schedule, Robinson has gained 2,026 yards from scrimmage. That is 150 scrimmage yards shy of Atlanta's current franchise record of 2,176 scrimmage yards, set by running back William Andrews in 1983. He'll need 151 yards in the Falcons' last two games to set a new single-season scrimmage yard record.

Robinson is averaging 135 scrimmage yards per game, putting him on pace to finish with 2,296 in 17 games. He has topped the 150-yard mark six times this season, so there's a possibility Robinson accomplishes this feat Monday night in the Falcons' Week 17 prime-time game against the Los Angeles Rams inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

'Monday Night Football' turns historic as Matthew Stafford, Bijan Robinson etch names in NFL record book

Matthew Stafford and Bijan Robinson both made history during Monday night's game between the Rams and Falcons.

Stafford passed former Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger for sixth on the NFL's career passing list. Robinson broke 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey's NFL record for the most yards from scrimmage before turning 24 years old.

Robinson, who entered Monday night's game needing 68 yards to surpass McCaffrey, set the record on a 93-yard touchdown run that gave the Falcons a 21-0 halftime lead.

The milestone cemented Robinson as one of the elite young offensive players in league history, while Stafford's climb up the passing list underscored his longevity and late-career resurgence. Stafford entered the game with 63,988 career passing yards, while Roethlisberger finished his 18-year career with 64,088 yards and two Super Bowl titles.

Intriguing players to watch in Falcons vs. Cardinals

These five have to take flight for Atlanta to thrive today.

Several Atlanta Falcons players have a chance to finish the 2025 season strong, which will carry ramifications fo both the team and those individual players entering the 2026 offseason. That creates a lot of intrigue for this Week 16 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals. Thus, I’m tasked with naming five, and only five, Falcons who are the most intriguing for Sunday’s action.

First up is Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins, who has made a name for himself beating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during his short stint as the Falcons’ starter the past two seasons. His numbers versus the Bucs are impressive, but range from ordinary to underwhelming against most of the remaining competition he’s seen as a Falcon.

ATLANTA — Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. injured his right knee and was removed in the third quarter of Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers.

Penix was hit on a third-down pass, which fell incomplete with 5:22 left in the quarter. He attempted to get back up but fell to the grass again and took off his helmet.

Penix was replaced by veteran Kirk Cousins in the subsequent Falcons offensive series. The second-year quarterback was 13-of-16 passing for 175 yards before leaving.

He suffered a bone bruise in his left knee against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 7 and missed Atlanta's next game against the Miami Dolphins. Cousins started in that game, a 34-10 loss.

Penix went down when he was hit hard on an incomplete pass to David Sills on third down in the middle of the third quarter. Penix was in clear discomfort following the play, tossing his helmet in frustration as he was attended to by Falcons medial staff.

Penix was able to walk off the field under his own power, however, but was later seen on the bench without his helmet as backup Kirk Cousins took over under center for Atlanta.

Michael Penix Jr. injury update: Falcons QB exits with knee injury

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. left Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers after taking a hard hit in the third quarter.

Penix appeared to have a limp after taking a shot on a third-and-10 incompletion with the Falcons leading 21-16. The second-year signal-caller walked off with trainers before heading into the medical tent to be evaluated.

He was replaced in the game by veteran backup Kirk Cousins.

Penix was listed as questionable to return with a knee injury.

Penix completed 13 of 16 passes for 175 yards before leaving the game. At halftime, he had completed 11 of 12 passes, which marked the third-best completion percentage (91.7%) by a Falcons quarterback in the first half of a game in the last 30 years.
