How far is too far? The risks of a tumbling property market

Brace for impact. Wednesday will deliver the figures on the monthly change in home prices. For the two-thirds of Australians who are already owners, it will be unwelcome news.

And as much as various federal government ministers turn themselves inside out to avoid admitting it, this was the house price correction that Labor engineered.

In its May budget, Treasury forecast that the government’s tax changes to help young people get into the housing market would lower property price growth by a modest 2 per cent against a background of roughly 6 per cent annual increases since 2000.

But tax tools can be too blunt to allow governments to guide the glide to a gentle price landing.

The housing correction we had to have will still be painful

A slide in house prices will improve affordability, but there are risks to confidence, consumer spending and housing supply that cannot be ignored.

Former prime minister John Howard once said no one ever complained to him that the price of their house was going up.

Will anyone complain to Anthony Albanese that house prices are going down at a rate of knots?

The Channel Nine TV presenter Karl Stefanovic has posted a video of himself embracing the UK far-right activist Tommy Robinson, who is set to appear on his podcast.

The award-winning broadcaster also told another UK activist, Ant Middleton, a former soldier who has spoken at Robinson’s “unite the kingdom” rallies, he would “make a great prime minister”, in an interview on his podcast, the Karl Stefanovic Show, on Monday.

Revealed: The Russian Neo-Nazi Network Pushing ‘White Lives Matter’ Division in Britain – Promoted by Tommy Robinson

As riots spread across Belfast, Tommy Robinson promoted a movement founded by a sanctioned Russian oligarch, which has pushed white supremacist propaganda about the death of Henry Nowak

A network of Russian far-right extremists steeped in neo-Nazi antisemitism – created under the umbrella of a sanctioned oligarch close to Russian President Vladimir Putin, and now openly promoted by Tommy Robinson – has been driving ‘White Lives Matter’ propaganda over the murder of 18-year-old student Henry Nowak, Byline Times can reveal.

The organisation promoted by Robinson is part of a wider Russian state-linked campaign to sow division across the UK and Europe,

A Byline Times review of X and Telegram posts by the Brotherhood of Academists, a Russian ultranationalist youth movement which operates under the leadership of the US-sanctioned Tsargrad Society, reveals that the group pushed a white supremacist framing of Nowak’s killing on 20 May – the day media coverage of his killer’s trial intensified.

UK weather: Hottest day of year so far as temperatures soar on bank holiday weekend

The scene in St James's Park in London on Saturday. Temperatures are set to soar across the weekend after the day was declared the hottest of the year so far

Temperatures will continue to soar across the bank holiday weekend following the hottest day of the year so far on Saturday.

As of 16:00 BST, temperatures had reached 30.3C at Frittenden in Kent, beating the previous day's maximum temperature of 28.4C in London.

The heat is forecast to intensify throughout the long weekend, reaching heatwave criteria in a number of locations.

Daytime highs are forecast to reach the upper 20s Celsius in many areas, with the low 30s Celsius likely in the week ahead.

'Heat leaves Africa and Med in shade' and 'Can't cope without Catherine'

There's a mix of stories on Saturday's papers. A heatwave is set to break the spring record in the UK, as bank holiday temperatures are on course to hit 33C, the i Weekend says. It adds that the UK will see hotter temperatures than parts of Africa and the Mediterranean as hot and humid air pushes across north-west Europe.

The Daily Telegraph leads with the news that families visiting popular tourist spots in the UK could face a holiday tax as mayors consider implementing "overnight visitor levies" to help struggling councils. The paper says as many as 10 of England's 14 regional mayors are considering the plan, which the Telegraph says could add as much as £300 to the cost of an average family getaway.

Could Cyclone Narelle come as far south as Perth?

Tropical Cyclone Narelle has re-intensified over the Indian Ocean and is threatening to put Western Australia next on its hit list.

The question is when, and where it will make its crossing — and could it make a rare crossing as far south as Perth?

The destructive system has already made a mammoth — and somewhat unusual — journey across the top of Australia, hitting both Queensland and the Northern Territory.

A WA crossing would make it the first cyclone in more than 20 years to make three separate landfalls across the two states and a territory.

Here's what we know about how it's managed to sustain the strength to make such a long trek across Australia.

Tropical Cyclone Narelle was again intensifying into a severe storm off Western Australia’s Kimberley coast on Wednesday with communities in the state’s world heritage-listed Shark Bay preparing for a potential direct hit on Friday night.

Narelle had made a rare trip for a cyclone system by forming in the Coral Sea off Queensland and maintaining structure all the way west to the Indian Ocean, where it was expected to build into a major category four system.

The battle to bring Tones and I, aka Toni Watson to a regional town in Australia has been won with the Victorian indie pop artist choosing Ingham.

The chance to see ARIA award winning artist Tones and I play a gig in Wollongong was too good to pass up, so Angie Pinney made her love for the singer public.

Earlier this month the Dance Monkey singer put out a call to her 600,000 fans on Facebook – make the most noise and she would play a one-off show in their town.

It didn't matter if the town was big or small, she would do it and tickets would be far cheaper than her usual concert series.
