Chris Packham’s Clarkson’s Farm remarks spark backlash

A row has erupted between broadcaster Chris Packham and Jeremy Clarkson after comments Mr Packham made on Celebrity Gogglebox about the illustrated opening sequence of Clarkson’s Farm.

Watching the Amazon Prime series, Mr Packham said of the animation: “That’s not what a farm looks like. Most farms are horrible monocultures which have been sprayed with deadly chemicals… the ground has been pumped full of fertiliser and most of the animals are indoors, in crates, being crushed and kept in the dark.”

Mr Clarkson hit back in his latest Sun column, describing Mr Packham as “endlessly angry” and pointing out that the sequence was “a drawing”.

Jeremy Clarkson has let his nice-farmer mask slip

Chris Packham is the latest subject of the presenter's rants – it's a far cry from the sympathetic character we know from Clarkson's Farm

Once again, Jeremy Clarkson has proved that he has learned diddly squat from the success of his Prime Video TV show, Clarkson’s Farm. That series has very consciously cast the pugilistic ex-Top Gear host in a more kindly light: he has gone from potty-mouthed petrolhead to amiable amateur farmer, fretting about his sheep and the challenges of crop rotation.

But now – and not for the first time – he has ripped up much of that goodwill with an unpleasant rant that makes you wonder if the more pleasant Clarkson we see in Clarkson’s Farm is merely an act for the cameras. In 2022, the target was Meghan Markle, whom he fantasised about booing in a Game of Thrones-style shame walk. Now it is the turn of BBC nature presenter Chris Packham, who had the nerve to critique the dystopian reality, as he sees it, of industrial-scale farming in the UK.

Jeremy Clarkson branded 'disingenuous' as feud with BBC star escalates

Jeremy Clarkson hit back at Chris over the claims(Image: Getty)

Jeremy Clarkson has been accused of being among numerous "industrial farmers" concealing the true nature of modern agriculture. Naturalist Chris Packham recently slammed the show's depiction of farming while appearing on Celebrity Gogglebox alongside his stepdaughter, Megan McCubbin.

During the programme, he alleged the former Top Gear host was giving audiences the "wrong idea" about farming through his popular series Clarkson's Farm, which has chronicled Jeremy's experience running Diddly Squat Farm over five seasons.

After Jeremy hit back at his claims, Chris told us: "Clarkson is being disingenuous and the industrial farmers are making a smokescreen to hide their horrors. I made the comments about the silly idealistic stereotyped cartoon at the top of his programme, he knows that."

Tasmania's peak farming body has slammed the Federal Government's decision to approve the sale of Tasmania's largest farm to a UK forestry investor.

The Government-funded Clean Energy Finance Corporation has joined forces with Gresham House and British Aviva Investors to pay $142 million for Rushy Lagoon.

Tas Farmers CEO Nathan Calman said he's extremely disappointed on behalf of the agriculture sector and north-east community.

Chalmers approves ‘disgraceful’ farm sale to foreign-owned carbon credit company

Jim Chalmers’ “disgraceful” approval of the sale of a Tasmanian cattle farm shows that for Labor "net zero trumps the protection of prime productive agricultural land", the Coalition says.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers’ “disgraceful” approval of a Tasmanian cattle farm to a British company receiving $69 million in public funds has been decried by the Coalition.

Labor gave the green light for the sale of the 22,000-hectare Rushy Lagoon dairy and beef farmland to Tasmanian Nature Asset Trust, which is run by the UK investment firm Gresham House.

The Albanese government’s approval followed the Foreign Investment Review Board approving the $100 million sale.
