Bridgerton puts female romance between Francesca and Michaela at heart of season five
We've barely recovered from season four of Bridgerton, but now details of series five have been announced – with a new romance to set hearts aflutter.
Every season focuses on one central romance featuring a member of the Bridgerton family – and it's the turn of the reserved and somewhat mysterious Francesca, played by Hannah Dodd.
She will have a love story with Lord Kilmartin's cousin Michaela, played by Masali Baduza. A teaser trailer released on Tuesday showed the pair touching hands.
While same-sex romance has featured in Netflix's hit period drama previously, this will mark the first time it's been part of the central storyline.
Bridgerton’s fifth season will focus on queer love story between Francesca Bridgerton and Michaela Stirling
In a first for the juggernaut Netflix show, the young widow will find herself in a ‘complicated’ relationship with her cousin-in-law
Dearest gentle reader … Netflix has announced that Bridgerton’s upcoming fifth season will focus on a gay lead storyline in a first for the hit romantic period drama.
Netflix confirmed the news on Tuesday while also revealing that the new season is in production.
The teaser trailer, which is less than a minute long, depicts the two characters, Francesca Bridgerton and her cousin-in-law Michaela Stirling, standing alongside one another and almost holding hands.
In the new season, Francesca, the introverted middle daughter of the eponymous Bridgerton brood played by Hannah Dodd, will find herself in a “complicated†romantic relationship with Michaela, played by Masali Baduza.

Netflix has released a teaser for the upcoming season of its hit show Bridgerton, including a much-anticipated confirmation of the show’s first queer love story.
Although the regency romance has explored queer plots in previous seasons, the Bridgerton teaser released on Wednesday depicts the show’s first major queer love story – between the Bridgerton clan’s introverted middle daughter, Francesca Stirling, played by Hannah Dodd, and Michaela Stirling, played by Masali Baduza.
In the 48-second trailer, the two women are standing on a balcony and turn to look at one another before reaching for each other’s hands as the words “love begins again” flash between takes.
