Ilia Malinin, U.S. win figure skating team gold at Olympics

MILAN — After three days of dramatic and often surprising competition, the United States claimed the Olympic gold medal in the figure skating team competition on Sunday night.

After carrying a five-point lead into the final day of the event, the Americans found themselves locked in a tie with Japan entering the men's free skate, the last segment of the competition.

It would all come down to Ilia Malinin, the two-time reigning world champion in his debut Olympics. The 21-year-old had struggled with nerves during his short program Saturday and stepped out of his triple axel before under-rotating his quad lutz to finish in a staggering second place — a rarity for him and more than 10 points out of first.

Ilia Malinin didn’t execute the move that only he has ever produced in competition, the quadruple axel. At one point of his risqué routine, he faltered, lost balance and nearly fell hands first onto the ice.

Malinin, figure skating’s greatest performer at just 21, had the gold medal riding on his blades as America’s last skater in the teams event. In normal circumstances, a blunder of that magnitude would potentially cost his team the gold.

Swindon figure skaters prepare for their first Olympics

Kristen Spours and Ed Appleby train at the Link Centre in Swindon

Two figure skaters are preparing to compete at their first Winter Olympics.

Kristen Spours and Ed Appleby, who train at the Link Centre in Swindon in Wiltshire, have both overcome challenges ahead of the Milan-Cortina Games, which officially begin on Friday.

Spours had back surgery shortly after qualifying in March 2025 and was forced to take four months away from the sport, whilst Appleby injured his ankle during the off-season.

Spours said her Olympic story was "less about medals and more about resilience".

'I never really believed I’d make it': Team GB figure skater makes Olympic debut following injury

Kristen Spours admitted she could finally relax after making her Olympic figure skating debut.

The 25-year-old two-time British champion has appeared at three World Championships but never on the biggest stage, and she relished every moment of her skate in the team competition.

While her score was slightly down on her season’s best, she insists it was the perfect preparation for her main event later in the Games.

“I can finally call myself an Olympian. It’s such a super-cool moment for me,” she said.

“I never really believed I’d make it until I stepped out on the ice. Even yesterday I was just stressing that I’d injure my back or something.

Team GB Skater Triumphs at Olympics Despite Injury Setback

Kristen Spours, a 25-year-old British figure skater, recently made her Olympic debut at the 2026 Milan Games. Despite a challenging period in her career, including a spinal injury that required surgery, she embraced this moment as a significant personal accomplishment.

The two-time British champion participated in the team competition, an event she approached with both excitement and nerves. “I can finally call myself an Olympian. It’s such a super-cool moment for me,” Spours shared. This competition marked a milestone for her, as she had previously competed at three World Championships but had never faced the Olympic stage.

During the selection process for the Olympics, Spours edged out teammate Nina Povey. She finished in 23rd place at the European Championships in Sheffield, an achievement critical for securing her spot in Milan.

Netflix’s New Figure Skating Romance Shares A Connection With ‘Heated Rivalry’

Between Heated Rivalry and the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy, ice sports are having a moment. And on Jan. 22, another frosty obsession enters the chat.

Based on Jennifer Iacopelli’s 2022 novel of the same name, Finding Her Edge follows teen figure skater Adriana as she juggles her Olympic dreams with family pressure and a twisty love triangle. As Iacopelli recently told HELLO! of the new Netflix series, it does have a few things in common with its fellow rink romance, Heated Rivalry — like its ice-sports backdrop and Canadian talent, including the actor Aidan Shaw, who appears in both series.

The collision of young love and high-profile competition also plays a role in both shows. “Our yearning manifests differently when the yearning becomes too much — we are a family show — but it is genuine teenage yearning that I adore, the way you see it in The Summer I Turn Pretty, or All the Boys,” Iacopelli explained.

‘Finding Her Edge’ Everything You Need to Know About Netflix’s New YA Ice-Skating Drama

Netflix has just released its new teen ice-skating series, based on Jennifer Iacopelli’s book. Headlined by Madelyn Keys and Cale Ambrozic, the series premiered globally on the streamer on January 22nd, 2026. Here’s everything you need to know.

The eight-episode first season, with episodes running approximately 44 minutes each, was first unveiled in early 2025. Production began in mid-February 2025 in Barrie, Orillia, and surrounding communities in Ontario and wrapped by May.

Netflix was originally due to broadcast the series alongside Family Channel in Canada, the network owned by WildBrain. However, as confirmed over the Summer and coming into effect as of October 2025, the network has permanently shut down alongside three others as its distribution deals had been ended. We can also reveal the series will be aired in Canada on Radio-Canada and its respective streaming service.
