US watchdog announces Epstein files audit

The Department of Justice inspector general has announced an audit of the government release of the Epstein files.

The audit will review how the department identified, redacted and released records.

Some survivors have kept up a campaign for more transparency because some files were not published and some information was blacked out or held back.

An internal US government watchdog says it will audit the justice department's handling of the Epstein files following months of controversy over redactions, missed deadlines and the publication of survivors' details.

As Trump inspector general nominee waits in wings, Epstein files audit draws muted praise

Survivors and allies are cautiously optimistic, but one former IG warned that an audit won’t get at how the Justice Department bungled the Epstein files so badly.

After the Justice Department announced Thursday that its Office of the Inspector General intends to audit the department’s response to the Epstein Files Transparency Act, one small detail tended to go unremarked: President Donald Trump recently put forward his own nominee to lead the office conducting that audit.

William Blier, a DOJ employee of roughly 40 years, is currently the acting inspector general in charge of the office. Blier, the longtime deputy inspector general, has served in that office for almost 20 years and, prior to that, was a career federal prosecutor in Washington, D.C., for two decades.

The US Justice Department's internal watchdog says it ‌will investigate how the department complied with a law requiring the release of investigative ‌files on the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The DOJ's Office of Inspector ‌General, which operates independently of the department, said it would "evaluate the DOJ's processes for identifying, redacting and releasing records in its possession as required by the act".

Newly released files shed new light on Chomsky and Epstein relationship

Latest communications undermine Chomsky’s earlier claims that he primarily had financial dealings with Epstein

The close friendship that Noam Chomsky maintained with Jeffrey Epstein continued being detailed extensively among millions of investigative records pertaining to the late convicted sex offender recently released by the US justice department, including Chomsky “fantasizing about the Caribbean island”.

In Friday’s tranche of documents, which built upon earlier disclosures of their close social ties, there is no specific indication that the famed academic and linguist was referring to his friend’s private Caribbean island where children were sexually abused. But the personal familiarity between the two men in that exchange is palpable, as it is in numerous other emails between Chomsky and Epstein aimed at planning more mundane social gatherings.

The Convergence of Epstein and Chomsky

“Men are more inclined to choose evil than good when they are free to choose.” Niccolò Machiavelli, Discourses on the First Decade of Titus Livy, Book I.

“Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant; and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all.” Jesus of Nazareth, Gospel according to Mark 10:43–44.

The court-ordered declassification of files linked to the Jeffrey Epstein case has shaken global public opinion not only because of the scale of the documented abuse, but because of the nature of the material released: complaints, testimonies, and private correspondence that remained under seal for years and that now allow us to observe, within a single corpus, the extremes of contemporary power. In these documents, the girls allege that Jeffrey Epstein organized sexual auctions of minors within closed circles of power. The testimonies describe practices of extreme objectification and recount direct intimate bodily “inspection” of the minors at the hands of Donald Trump, today the most powerful man in the world, before their assignment to one of the oligarchs present. This is not an ongoing trial or a verdict: these are files declassified by court order, containing allegations formally entered into the record, and whose publication has produced international shock because of the rawness of what is described and the names associated with it. There have been thousands of documents, and reading them is hard.
