Mamdani’s universal childcare plan will cost taxpayers billions more than planned as costs balloon: report

Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s universal childcare plan will cost 50% more than he advertised, according to a new study.

The proposed program is estimated to cost a whopping $9 billion annually, approximately with an average cost per child roughly $27,000, according to the report from the Center for New York City Affairs, a nonpartisan research organization affiliated with the New School.

“An estimated $8.7 to $9.3 billion would be needed annually to fund universal child care in New York City,” the report, which was released on Monday, states.

That’s $3 billion more than the mayor previously said his ambitious universal free childcare program would cost.

Introducing a Universal Child Care Cost Model for New York

Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Governor Kathy Hochul made a commitment to universal child care this year and took initial steps toward this bold objective in the State and City FY2027 budgets. That included piloting new contracted care services, like 2-K in New York City and 0-2 care in three upstate counties; a commitment to universal Pre-K statewide by 2028; and the establishment of a new State Office of Child Care and Early Education.

Nevertheless, questions remain about how much a universal, high-quality, stable system will cost, and who will pay for it.

To that end, the Economic and Fiscal Policy Team at the Center for New York City Affairs developed a universal child care cost model, a dynamic tool that incorporates the latest grounded assumptions and relevant costs for child care programs.

The race to find routes around the Strait of Hormuz and which nation is winning

Oil-exporting nations are future-proofing themselves amid uncertainty around the Strait of Hormuz. (Reuters)

Gulf nations are scrambling for ways to bypass the Strait of Hormuz, with plans for more pipelines and a new port.

Analysts say existing infrastructure has helped cushion the global oil market from even greater price spikes during the US-Iran war.

Iran has reportedly put their proxies in Yemen, the Houthis, on notice to block another crucial shipping route.

The Strait of Hormuz is closed again, tankers are being attacked, the Gulf's oil and gas exports are threatened, and chaos remains the new norm.

But for months, countries and companies have been finding ways to bypass the choke point, and are now making plans to future-proof themselves from even more disruption with new pipelines and a potential new port.

Dubai plans new port to bypass Strait of Hormuz

Dubai/London | DP World is planning to build a new port and a container terminal on the United Arab Emirates’ east coast that would reduce Dubai’s dependence on its flagship Jebel Ali hub and bypass the Strait of Hormuz.

The Dubai-based port operator is in talks to develop a new multipurpose port in the coastal area of Fujairah and a new terminal at the existing harbour in the same emirate, people familiar with the matter said.

Oil pipelines around the Strait of Hormuz won't end the threat Iran poses to Middle East crude exports

Middle East oil producers plan to build new pipelines to reduce their dependence on the Strait of Hormuz, as Iran disrupts the Gulf states' seaborne crude exports with near daily attacks on tankers.

But new pipelines will not end the threat to the region's energy exports, analysts said. This infrastructure is just as vulnerable to the low-cost, asymmetric attacks that have targeted ships in Hormuz, they said.

The U.S. is supporting Iraq's effort to rebuild a crude oil pipeline that runs from its northern city of Kirkuk through Syria to the Mediterranean Sea, a State Department official told CNBC Thursday. U.S. companies are expected to play a role in the pipeline's construction, the official said.

‘I find that ridiculous’: Cleary finally puts ‘lazy and lame’ Origin criticism to bed

Nathan Cleary has finally put the State of Origin criticism to bed.

The four-time NRL premiership winner’s performances at the Origin level have been a consistent talking point throughout the series, but the Panthers gun responded in a big way on Wednesday night.

After scoring a double in a strong performance in the 2026 decider at Suncorp Stadium, the Blues halfback was awarded the Wally Lewis Medal for the Player of the Series.

State of Origin 2026 player of the series: Cleary claims first Wally Lewis Medal

NSW Blues halfback Wally Lewis has claimed the Wally Lewis Medal as the player of the State of Origin series for the first time in his career.

Cleary, who came into the Origin series under plenty of pressure for his spot, was named man of the match in both Game 1 and 3 of the series.

Game 1 saw him lead the Blues back from a 14-point deficit to take out the opener in Sydney after Kalyn Ponga was sent off.

While he had a poor performance in Game 2, leaving question marks over his spot and halves combination with Mitchell Moses, he turned up in a big way for the decider in Brisbane, scoring the opening two tries of the contest, kicking five from five off the boot, and putting up sizeable efforts at both ends of the park.

Scientists in Australia find ‘smoking gun’ evidence of world’s oldest meteorite strike

Curtin University researchers use innovative techniques to date three-billion-year-old impact crater in Western Australia’s Pilbara region

A meteorite that struck Earth three billion years ago left behind a “smoking gun” – evidence of the world’s oldest impact crater in a remote part of Australia.

Ancient rocks in Western Australia’s Pilbara region record the event, which occurred during the Archean eon, a period 4 to 2.5 billion years ago, when tectonic plates were beginning to form and early life emerging.

To establish a precise date, Curtin University scientists analysed the age of rare geological features, called shatter cones, in an area known as the North Pole Dome crater, publishing their findings in Geology journal.

Asteroid crater in Pilbara confirmed again as world's oldest

Scientists have confirmed that an asteroid crater in Western Australia's East Pilbara is the oldest in the world.

It is the second time the ancient crater's age has been pinpointed after a false start last year.

Some scientists are still disputing the findings, saying there are inaccuracies in the study.

Scientists have dated a crater in the Australian outback at 3 billion years old, making it the world's oldest known site of an asteroid impact.

The North Pole Dome, about 1,600 kilometres north of Perth, was the source of controversy last year when it was reported as the oldest in the world, a claim debunked by another group of scientists a month later.

World's Oldest Known Asteroid Crater Is 3 Billion Years Old, Study Confirms

When scientists disagree, sometimes the truth is somewhere in the middle.

That has turned out to be true for the age of an impact crater deep in the remote scrublands of Western Australia's Pilbara desert.

Initially, the team that discovered the North Pole Dome impact structure (aka Miralga) estimated its age at about 3.47 billion years – far older than any other impact evidence discovered to date.

But then a second team challenged that estimate, arguing that the crater must be less than 2.77 billion years old.

Now, the original team has studied tiny crystals in the site's impact structures, and determined that the event that created the crater took place around 3.024 billion years ago – confirming its status as the oldest impact crater known on Earth.

Warning: This post contains spoilers for I Will Find YouThe Netflix thriller series I Will Find You, based on Harlan Coben’s 2023 novel, opens with a case that appears to be closed: David Burroughs (Sam Worthington) is serving a life sentence for the murder of his son, Matthew Burroughs—who was found dead in his own bed.

I Will Find You review – seen one maddeningly watchable Harlan Coben adaptation? You’ve seen them all

Severance’s Britt Lower stars in Netflix’s latest lot of cobblers. It’s an eight-part saga of fists and mumbling, with a script made from Play-Doh

A lever groans, a pipe judders and thunk; another length of premium-grade bunkum is extruded from the Harlan Coben Industrial Adaptation Complex™. This particular emission – an eight-part assemblage of fists and mumbling entitled I Will Find You – is the 13th of Coben’s novels to have been processed by Netflix as part of a 14-book deal. Which means – the pulse quickens – there is now just one more to go. On Netflix, at least. The author’s ongoing deal with Amazon suggests we could be trapped in an ever-spiralling cycle of preposterous thrillers for eternity. May God have mercy on our souls.

'Find something else': Academics warn of workload as uni rankings released

The University of New South Wales (UNSW) has ranked best Australian university and 19th worldwide. (AAP: Dean Lewins)

The annual Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) university rankings have placed the University of New South Wales (UNSW) as Australia's best university, ranking 19th out of 1,504 universities worldwide.

Higher education experts have cautioned the rankings, saying they have little relevance to domestic students.

A new survey of more than 500 university staff reveals just more than 40 per cent plan to stay until retirement, with widespread concern about workloads.

Australia's top universities have surged in the latest global rankings over the past decade, but experts warn the results have little relevance to domestic students.

The Sydney university ranked Australia’s best for the first time

The University of NSW has toppled the University of Melbourne as the best-ranked Australian university in the prestigious Quacquarelli Symonds ranking survey for the first time.

The QS rankings, released on Thursday, show that most Australian universities have improved significantly over the past decade – UNSW has climbed 30 places to sit at 19th in the world, the University of Melbourne has gone from No.42 to No.22, the University of Sydney has moved from No.46 to No.28, while the fourth-placed Australian National University has slipped from No.22 to No.29.

Rankings are important to universities because they help attract international students, who provide a significant revenue stream.

University of Melbourne toppled from top spot in global rankings

The University of Melbourne has lost its spot as Australia’s top-rated university on one of the major global tertiary rankings, amid warnings the nation’s reputation as a world-class study destination could be at risk.

On Thursday, the University of New South Wales (UNSW) claimed the No.1 spot among Australian institutions in the QS World University Rankings 2027 for the first time, ascending to 19th globally ahead of the University of Melbourne at 22nd.

University of Melbourne interim vice chancellor Glyn Davis said they were pleased to maintain a position ranked among the world’s top 25 institutions, having placed 19th last year.

Motorists face wait to find out fix for Great Western Highway

Motorists severely disrupted by the closure of a critical motorway over the Blue Mountains will have to wait up to six weeks to find out the engineering fix and how long it will take to complete.

A stretch of the Great Western Highway at Victoria Pass has been closed indefinitely since March 9 after engineers found serious cracking and ground movement in a stone causeway built by convicts nearly 200 years ago. The road defects and bulging of sandstone walls risked the causeway collapsing.

After more than 20 companies were briefed late last month, two consortia led by contractors Seymour Whyte and Gamuda have been shortlisted to develop solutions for the closed section of the highway by the end of June.

Cracking has appeared on the Victoria Pass detour route as Transport for NSW (TfNSW) works to keep traffic flowing between the Central West and Sydney.

According to a TfNSW spokesperson, wet weather caused minor pavement cracking on the Bells Line of Road at Mount Tomah but did not require immediate action.

"Safety is our first priority. A slope risk assessment was undertaken and, at the time of detection, it was determined the road was safe and did not require immediate intervention," the spokesperson said.

JB Hi-Fi customer Dave Lee walked into his local store, only to find the physical media section "completely and utterly gutted".

Lee, a film historian, physical media advocate and collector, visited the JB Hi-Fi store in Westfield Doncaster – one of the major Melbourne stores – only to find shelves of DVDs and 4K Blu-Rays being emptied, with caution tape surrounding the now bare aisles.

In a video which has now gone viral, the content creator commiserated about the "sight that all physical media advocates absolutely dread."

Lee, who owns a collection of over 12,000 films and series, says he's spent a lot of time and money at the Aussie home entertainment retailer over the years.
