The next solar eclipse will be an annular solar eclipse on Feb. 17, 2026.

During an annular solar eclipse, the moon covers a majority of the sun, leaving a distinct ring of light, hence the nickname 'ring of fire' eclipse.

On Feb. 17, an annular solar eclipse will transform the sun into a breathtaking "ring of fire." To mark this precise celestial alignment — and the orbital choreography behind it — here are three fascinating facts about solar eclipses you might not know.

The thickness of the glowing ring depends on how far the moon is from Earth. During this annular solar eclipse, the moon will be near its farthest point, making the ring appear especially bright and narrow.

Under-fire Trump commerce secretary confirms he visited Epstein's island

US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has confirmed he visited Jeffrey Epstein's island in 2012, contradicting previous claims that he had cut ties with the sex offender years earlier, before he was convicted.

"I did have lunch with him as I was on a boat going across on a family vacation," Lutnick testified on Capitol Hill on Tuesday. "My wife was with me, as were my four children and nannies … We had lunch on the island. That is true. For an hour."

Correspondence about the visit was included in Epstein documents released by the US Department of Justice.

Some lawmakers have called on Lutnick to resign, but on Tuesday the White House said he had the full support of President Donald Trump.

US Commerce Secretary Lutnick downplays Epstein ties amid resignation calls

Lutnick, a prominent member of the Trump adminstration, has faced Senate questions over a 2012 meeting he had with Epstein.

United States Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has played down his connections to child sex abuser Jeffrey Epstein after newly released emails shared details about their interactions.

Facing calls for his resignation, Lutnick told a Senate committee on Tuesday that he “barely knew” Epstein, although emails appear to contradict his earlier accounts of their relationship.

“I did not have any relationship with him. I barely had anything to do with that person,” Lutnick said.

The commerce secretary is the latest member of the political and financial elite to face pressure over relations with the disgraced financier.

Fire Perth: Firefighters battling to contain bushfire near petrol station in Lexia, Perth’s east

Firefighters are battling to get the upper hand on an out of control bushfire which has broken out close to a service station in Perth’s east, with a thick plume of smoke seen from tens of kilometres away.

Emergency services received a call to triple-0 reporting the blaze on Robinson Road and Trainor Road in Lexia, just before lunchtime on Wednesday.

A bushfire Watch and Act alert has been issued with four fire crews and water bombing aircraft on scene.

A Department of Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said the fire had grown to about 200 metres wide by the time crews arrived on scene and was continuing to burn in the Gnangara Pine Plantation.

A sub-par UC Capitals have earned a much-needed but ugly win to keep their finals hopes afloat, beating the cellar-dwelling Adelaide Lightning 67-61.

Having lost four of their past five matches, Canberra required a victory to stay in touch with the fourth-placed Southside Melbourne Flyers.

The Capitals also face a daunting end-of-season schedule, with four of their last five games to come against current top four sides.

Exit Signs or Just Decorations? Chaos at Brisbane International Airport Raises Serious Safety Concerns

Passengers travelling through Brisbane International Airport were left confused and alarmed on Tuesday, 13 January, after a fire alarm sounded inside the international terminal, triggering flight delays and widespread disruption. While the alarm itself was eventually understood to be minor, the airport’s response exposed a far more serious issue: a troubling lack of preparedness and staff training during emergency situations.

As the alarm rang, passengers did what any reasonable person would do in a potential emergency — they looked for the nearest clearly marked exit. One such exit, prominently indicated with a green emergency sign, was located at a terminal departure gate. Several passengers attempted to use this exit, only to be stopped by a security staff member who insisted it was not to be used.

Quicks, Owen fire as Hurricanes humble Strikers

The Adelaide Strikers have crumbled with the bat in a heavy loss to the Hobart Hurricanes at Ninja Stadium

Speedsters Riley Meredith and Nathan Ellis have ripped through the Adelaide Strikers as the table-topping Hobart Hurricanes posted a dominant 37-run Big Bash League win.

Chasing Hobart's 6-178, the Strikers were left reeling at 4-8 after Meredith and Ellis took two scalps each in the space of 12 deliveries at Ninja Stadium on Friday night.

Short on wickets this season, Meredith (2-16) had Adelaide skipper Matthew Short (2) caught at cover, before bowling Mackenzie Harvey for a duck two balls later.

Ellis (2-7) came to the party in the next over, getting rid of the dangerous Chris Lynn after a successful review for caught behind, then also accounting for Jason Sangha.

Hobart Hurricanes Squad Announcement vs Adelaide Strikers

The Hobart Hurricanes return to Big Bash action tomorrow night against the Adelaide Strikers, following a decent break since their last game against the Sydney Thunder on Saturday.

In their first game against Tim Paine's Adelaide Strikers in BBL|15, the Hurricanes will be looking to continue their good form, which has them on top of the BBL standings.

After winning the toss, the Sydney Thunder went on to score 4-205, but not without an exciting start to Will Prestwidge's Hurricanes career, as he took two wickets in his first two balls.

Openers Mitch Owen (45 off 18) and Tim Ward (90 off 49) got the Hurricanes off to a flyer in their batting innings, before Nikhil Chaudhary (29* off 14) and Matt Wade (13* off 5) guided the 'Cane Train home with 13 balls to spare, getting them back on the winner's list.

NSW is facing a weekend of extreme bushfire danger with far fewer trained firefighters than previously thought, new data from the Rural Fire Service reveals.

The RFS has frequently said it is the largest volunteer firefighting service in the world, with more than 70,000 members, but the number of trained firefighters is now just over 45,000, the agency privately told the Productivity Commission last year.

About 16,240 RFS volunteers have “village firefighter competency”, meaning they can fight fires in small buildings, in vehicles or other blazes likely to be found in a village setting, according to RFS documents from 2023 obtained under freedom-of-information laws.

Fire destroys part of Clayton's Range & Shop in Horsham, Pennsylvania

A fire at an indoor shooting range in Horsham, Pennsylvania, forced firefighters into a difficult and dangerous fight, complicated by ammunition inside the building.

Crews were called to Easton Road in Horsham just after 2:30 p.m. Monday, and the road remained closed for hours as crews worked to get the scene under control.

At the scene of the fire, employees of Clayton's Range & Shop stood in the cold, watching firefighters work to save what they could from a business many said has been a staple in the area for decades. The small business is now in ruins.

Wharf businesses grapple with fire's aftermath on Portland waterfront

PORTLAND, Maine (WGME) — It was a long night for Portland firefighters.

Deputy Fire Chief Jon Hendricks says a fire broke out around 5:30 on Friday night.

The heavy flames were coming from a warehouse building off Custom House Wharf.

Hendricks says frozen fire hydrants and narrow roads posed stiff challenges to combat the flames.

Two firefighters were hurt in the process, but they were not hospitalized.

"The first in companies did a great job, and they made a very aggressive attack to keep it from spreading down the rest of the wharf," Hendricks said.

The fire tore through a boat repair shop. Hendricks says the building is a total loss.
