    Qantas slashes WA fares in massive blockbuster sale

    Travellers have been offered a major airfare bonanza, with Qantas slashing the price of flights across Australia and WA as part of its biggest domestic sale of the year.

    More than two million discounted economy and business seats have gone on sale across 101 routes and 60 destinations, with fares available for travel through to August 2027.

    For West Australians looking to escape the State, return flights can be snapped up with one-way fares from $249 to Darwin, $279 to Adelaide and $299 to Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney.

    There are also bargain fares within WA, with Perth to Geraldton flights starting at $169, while Perth to Broome is available from $249.

    Dozens of flights out of Sydney delayed up to 80 minutes

    Dozens of flights out of Sydney were delayed on Friday morning by up to 80 minutes because of what the airline industry’s peak body says is a shortage of air-traffic controllers.

    Sydney Airport’s Airservices Australia, which provides air-traffic control services, confirmed the delays but said they ended about noon and resulted in an average wait time of only 28 minutes.

    At least 27 Qantas flights were delayed, 23 were held up at QantasLink and low-cost stablemate Jetstar had 25 of its flights delayed. QantasLink also said it cancelled four flights on Friday.

    Virgin Australia confirmed morning flights on Friday experienced delays up to 80 minutes but said its teams were working to minimise disruption.

    Star Alliance carrier Turkish Airlines has made a change to its operation between Istanbul Airport (IST) and Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD). Instead of its current routing via Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL), the service will now operate via Singapore Changi Airport (SIN). Turkish commenced its first Australian route to Sydney in 2024, and has since added a one-stop service to the country's second-largest city of Melbourne Airport (MEL).

    Turkish Airlines shifts Sydney flights via Singapore

    Turkish Airlines will reroute its Istanbul-Sydney service through Singapore starting October 26, replacing Kuala Lumpur as the stopover. The change aligns with its Melbourne route and increases weekly flights to Singapore. The airline plans nonstop Sydney-Istanbul service by 2027 using A350-1000s.

    Starting October 26, Turkish Airlines’ five weekly Istanbul-Sydney flights will connect via Singapore Changi instead of Kuala Lumpur. The Airbus A350-900 will operate the routing, with outbound departures on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. This adjustment raises Turkish’s total weekly Singapore flights to 22, including existing Melbourne services.

    Travelers face longer layovers and potential schedule shifts, though Singapore offers more onward connections. The change signals Turkish’s intent to eventually launch nonstop flights, which could reduce total travel time by several hours once A350-1000s arrive.

    Major European airline launches Sydney-Singapore flights

    The skyways between Sydney and Singapore already offer travellers a choice between Qantas, Singapore Airlines, British Airways and low-cost carrier Scoot, but another airline – one of Europe’s largest – is about to bring a fresh dash of competition to the popular eight-hour route.

    Turkish Airlines is shifting the stopover point for its Istanbul-Sydney flights from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore as of late October 2026.

    And unlike the original KL stopover, Turkish Airlines says passengers will be able to pay for and travel on just the Sydney-Singapore and Singapore-Sydney legs of the flight.

    Australians dreaming of a Bali holiday can snap up return flights from $429 after Virgin launched a new international sale for one of our most popular overseas destinations.

    Virgin Australia announced the sale on Monday, offering discounted flights from five Australian cities starting August 7.

    Singapore Airlines adds nine new A380 routes

    Singapore Airlines will deploy its Airbus A380s on nine new long-haul routes between August 2026 and March 2027. London Heathrow tops the list with 14h40m flights. Frankfurt, Auckland, Sydney, and Melbourne also feature, with seasonal adjustments and varying frequencies.

    Between August 2026 and March 2027, Singapore Airlines will operate A380s on routes including London Heathrow (twice daily, 14h40m), Frankfurt (seasonal, 13h05m), and Auckland (daily from October, 10h50m). Sydney and Melbourne flights run daily or twice daily, while Dubai service is limited to four flights starting late March. Shorter routes to Delhi, Mumbai, and Shanghai each take 5h50m.

    Singapore Airlines Confirms Airbus A380 Flights On This Major New Route [Map]

    Due to the ongoing war in Iran, Singapore Airlines has regularly changed the planned launch date of Airbus A380 flights from Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) to Dubai International Airport (DXB). While subject to change, the latest schedule sees the type from the end of next March (if it happens).

    This development comes amid other superjumbo changes to and from SIN. For example, while Emirates previously planned three daily double-decker services to SIN, the carrier will only have one daily operation in September, before increasing again. Etihad Airways is due to resume superjumbo flights to Lion City in October, while Qatar Airways last flew the A380 there in March 2026.

    Twenty-two hours in an economy seat? I can’t begin to imagine what that’s going to feel like, but that’s what Qantas is proposing for its Project Sunrise, non-stop Sydney to London flights. The longest flight I’ve done in economy is the 14.5-hour marathon with Emirates from Sydney to Dubai, and that’s enough for me. By about five hours into the flight I’ve watched a movie, had a meal and now I’m getting restless and checking the flight map, and we’re not even halfway. The last four hours are torture.

    Qantas estimates its fuel bill could reach up to $3.3 billion due to the ongoing war in the Middle East, more than $800 million above its previous estimate.

    The airline says it has reduced domestic flight capacity in May and June, with most cuts on routes between major capital cities.

    Qantas say its fuel suppliers and the government continue "to provide confidence in fuel supply for the remainder of April and well into May".

    Qantas will cut domestic flights due to higher fuel costs and the uncertainty of the Middle East war, as it flags as much as $800 million in extra fuel costs.

Sentiment was also supported after Trump said Iran had contacted his administration on potential peace talks, even as the US moved to begin a naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz in the seventh week of the conflict.
