Heavy rain continues to batter north and central Queensland communities as ex-Tropical Cyclone Koji shifts inland.

The Isaac Regional Council has issued a flood warning for residents in the rural town of Clermont.

Heavy rainfall is extending south today, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

Authorities have issued a Flood Emergency Warning for the central Queensland town of Clermont as large parts of the state are on flood watch in the wake of ex-Tropical Cyclone Koji.

The Isaac Regional Council says the town is experiencing flooding and residents in low-lying areas should monitor conditions and be prepared to move to higher ground.

Communities are bracing for “life-threatening flash flooding” as the remnants of ex-cyclone Koji move westward across Queensland’s north, threatening regions still recovering from record rain in the new year.

Koji was declared a cyclone on Saturday evening, and had been expected to cross the coast as a category 2 storm.

In the early hours of Sunday it was downgraded to category 1, then weakened below tropical cyclone intensity as it crossed the coast between Ayr and Bowen about 10am.

Speaking in Mackay on Monday, Premier David Crisafulli said government disaster response efforts were dropping medicine and supplies to cattle in western Queensland regions, where almost 50,000 animals had been lost.

California Multiday Flood Threat Returns On New Year’s Eve

A multiday flood threat will return to the already soaked California starting Wednesday, and could last through the weekend and potentially into next week. Unfortunately, rain will impact many New Year’s Eve outdoor festivities, so plan to bring the rain gear with you. Rain will become more widespread Wednesday night into Thursday. Locally heavy rain and scattered thunderstorms will be possible in and around the LA basin early Thursday morning. Can’t rule out an isolated tornado across Southern California, so please stay weather aware if planning to go to the Rose Parade in Pasadena.

Warm subtropical system to bring heavy New Year’s rain to SoCal before a somewhat quieter pattern takes hold by mid January

Since October, a historically exceptional period of weather has unfolded across California. Unusually early and intense autumn rains soaked southern and central California–de-fusing fire season before offshore winds ever arrived in force. Then, for much of November and early December, an eerily quiescent period brought a period of remarkable temperature contrasts–between the persistently balmy and often record-warm conditions across southern California and in nearly all of California’s upper elevation regions (including the Sierra Nevada and Coast Ranges) and the unceasingly cold, damp, and dark conditions under a weeks-long tule fog layer in the Central Valley and parts of the SF Bay Area. Meanwhile, in the Pacific Northwest, exceptional warm storms brought widespread and severe flooding; simultaneously, record warmth and lack of precipitation brought a record-low snowpack to most of the interior West. When the official statistics are in and the final numbers crunched, it’s quite likely December 2025 will have been the warmest on record for most of the U.S. West by a considerable margin–and possibly even for California, despite the relative coolness in the Central Valley.

Local organizers prepare for rain ahead of New Year’s Eve events

COACHELLA VALLEY, Calif. (KESQ) – As the countdown to the New Year begins, local event organizers across the Coachella Valley say they’re prepared to celebrate — even with rain in the forecast.

With just a day away, event teams are busy putting the finishing touches on parties designed to bring the community together.

Tamara Issi, events coordinator at the Palm Springs Surf Club, says the “Afterglow” New Year’s Eve celebration will feature live music, food, and drinks — all indoors, eliminating concerns about rain.

“We’re going to have a live band. They’re going to be performing a lot of cover songs. In our atrium we’re going to have a DJ pumping the party tunes. Getting ready to dance.”
