'It's an absolute Ferrari to fly on': ADF retires attack helicopters

The Australian Army will retire the use of the Tiger Armed Reconnaissance Helicopter.

The 1st Aviation Regiment have farewelled the fleet with a flyover in Darwin.

The fleet will be replaced by Apache helicopters, and the regiment moved to Townsville.

After more than two decades, the Australian Defence Force (ADF) is farewelling its $1.1-billion fleet of attack helicopters, known as the Tigers, and replacing them with American Apaches.

The Tiger Armed Reconnaissance Helicopters (ARH) will be retired from use in the ADF this month, and the 1st Aviation Regiment will be transitioned to Townsville away from Darwin.

Australian Army to Retire its Tiger Attack Helicopters

The Australian Army officially announced on Sept. 23, 2026, the retirement of the Armed Reconnaissance Helicopter (ARH) Tiger. The 1st Aviation Regiment will hold a series of sundown events, attended by the unit’s members and their families, on Sept. 30 at their home base in Darwin, in the Northern Territory.

The Tiger served the Australian Defence Force (ADF) for two decades, starting in 2004, and combined the capabilities of the unarmed OH-58 Kiowa reconnaissance helicopter and the Bushranger armed version of the Bell UH-1 Iroquois (or Huey, as it is commonly known).

It will now give way to the Boeing AH-64E Apache attack helicopter, six of which have already been delivered, with the full fleet planned to be complete by late 2029, Defence Australia said. The transition will also see the 1st Avn Regt relocate 1,860 km east to Townsville,  Queensland, along the northern coastline, the release subsequently said.

Fly lure: How many big fish can the Pies land this trade period?

Collingwood are preparing to try to prove doomsayers wrong who predict their ageing list will soon drop off a cliff, with an aggressive off-season designed to make another flag push with this group.

The Magpies receive regular criticism about their lack of top-line youth, in large part owing to them picking higher than 17th just once in the past seven drafts – when they matched Gold Coast’s bid on Nick Daicos at No.4 in 2021.

Recruiting manager Shane O’Bree unearthed a promising player in his first draft last year in Sam Swadling, who is averaging 15 disposals and has kicked a goal in five of his six AFL games since being the No.37 selection last year. Their winning team against West Coast was their least-experienced side since Ed Allan – who received a contract offer last week – made his debut in round 11, 2024.

Pies make bold play for Port superstar with club-record offer

The Magpies have tabled a club-record offer for Power star Zak Butters

COLLINGWOOD has made a bold financial play for Port Adelaide free agent Zak Butters, tabling a club-record deal for the superstar midfielder.

The Magpies have long been keen on Butters and met with him earlier this season, using their champion Nick Daicos in their pitch.

They were seen to be further back in the pack of Victorian clubs chasing Butters, with Geelong, the Western Bulldogs and Richmond all desperate to land the 25-year-old as he gets set to depart Alberton Oval at the end of this season and return to Victoria.

Fellow Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis will play in the men's doubles semifinals with Aleksandar Kovacevic.

Hunter and Polmans will play Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia and Argentina's Marcelo Arevalo in the final.

A day after Alex de Minaur crashed out of Wimbledon and turned his attention to his imminent wedding, Australian tennis has climbed off the grassy canvas.

Marc Polmans and Storm Hunter have played their way into the mixed doubles final, while Thanasi Kokkinakis and his American partner, Aleksandar Kovacevic, are into a men's doubles semifinal.

Aussies can now fly to Europe for $510, thanks to Vietjet’s new route | Vietjet flies to Europe…

Explore the latest developments concerning Aussies can now.

Vietjet flies to Europe, but what does the new route mean for Aussies looking for cheaper fares?

Vietjet has unveiled its first European route, between Hanoi and Prague (Czech Republic), via Almaty (Kazakhstan).

Launching 10 October 2026, the Hanoi-Prague route creates an interesting new option for Australians heading to Europe via Vietnam, one of Australian travellers’ fastest-growing destinations – and a fixture among our top 10 most popular places abroad.

However, after Vietjet pulled its Australia-Hanoi flights last year, Aussie travellers looking to take advantage of the new service will need to transfer between Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam’s south and Hanoi in the north before connecting to the new Czech service. That means three stops between Australia and Europe. But at least the prices will be low – from AU$510 one-way between Hanoi and Prague – at a time when affordable airfares are becoming scarcer. Plus, combining Kazakhstan and the Czech Republic into a single itinerary could be compelling for travellers seeking more off-the-beaten-path destinations.

Essendon will unleash No.10 draft pick Jacob Farrow against North Melbourne on Saturday night, as besieged coach Brad Scott ruled out a “knee-jerk” reaction at the selection table and insisted he was optimistic about the team’s future.

A philosophical Scott said the way the Bombers played against the Kangaroos at Marvel Stadium “would look very different to what we produced in the first two weeks”.

Scott also dismissed concerns about his coaching future following crushing losses to Hawthorn and Port Adelaide.

“I’ve been here before. And I know the way out,” he said.
