Dog food recalled in UK after reports of pets losing their sight

Move by Years, which provides personalised meals in subscription-based service, follows recipe change

A dog food brand has recalled all of its fresh meals after reports that a recipe change may have caused some animals to develop an eye condition that, if left untreated, can lead to sight loss.

The brand Years said owners should stop feeding its fresh meals to their dogs “immediately” and also told them not to feed them to any other animal, or to donate or sell them.

In response to reports from some owners of pets not responding to treatment and in some cases losing their sight, Years told the Guardian: “The picture is mixed. Some [ophthalmologists] report dogs responding well to treatment … others have seen limited or slower responses.”

Dog food brand recall after reports of suspected eye issues in pets

A luxury dog food brand has issued a recall after receiving dozens of reports of suspected eye issues in pets.

Years, a premium subscription service offering fresh dog food "tailored" to an animal's needs, emailed customers on Monday night to say it had identified a "potential link" between its buckwheat ingredient and a dry eye condition.

The company, which boasts that its fresh meals are cooked by chefs, urged customers to stop feeding Years' products their pets or any other animal.

Years said that as of Sunday, it had received reports of 57 suspected cases of dry eye.

The company said on its website: "This follows a small number of reports of dogs having a potential adverse eye reaction to buckwheat, a common and approved ingredient, which we include in our meals. As of 16th August, this has affected 0.1% of our customers."

Years recalls fresh meals over buckwheat fears

Fresh pet food supplier Years has recalled all of its fresh meals (excluding the Chef’s Collection range) over fears that contaminated buckwheat may be causing eye irritation in dogs.

As of 9pm yesterday (August 18), 192 customers have reported potential, although as yet unverified, eye issues to the company, with symptoms including excessive blinking or squinting; continuous pawing at the eyes; thick discharge; and general discomfort around the eyes.

An initial review by Years has identified buckwheat as a potential contributing factor, and the company is investigating possible contamination within its buckwheat supply chain. All confirmed cases have emerged after buckwheat was introduced into the recipe, with zero confirmed cases prior to that change, the company reports. Laboratory testing is underway, with data covering symptoms, diet and environmental factors across confirmed cases checked by an independent ophthalmologist.

Dog food sold in Tri-State area recalled for potential salmonella contamination

CINCINNATI (WKRC) – Dog food sold in 11 states, including in the Tri-State area, was recalled because it may be contaminated with salmonella.

According to a recall report from the Food and Drug Administration, Oma's Pride issued a voluntary recall for six-pound bags of Woof Complete Canine Chicken Recipe after learning it was contaminated with salmonella.

Three reports of illnesses in dogs were reported in connection to the recall, which affects a single lot: BB012729. The product's best by date was 1/27/2029 and its UPC was 8 7938400145 9.

The product was recalled in Arizona, California, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, New Jersey, Nevada, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.

Popular Dog Food Recalled Due to Bacteria Causing Nausea and Bloody Diarrhea

Oma's Pride is voluntarily recalling one lot of its dog food due to the potential risk of Salmonella contamination.

The Connecticut-based pet food company has taken Woof Complete Canine Chicken Recipe (Lot BB012729) off the shelves, according to a recall announcement posted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration website on Wednesday, August 12.

The company initiated the recall after the FDA received a complaint and took a sample of the dog food that tested positive for Salmonella. Oma's Pride is "continuing with their investigation to determine the source and root cause of the contamination," according to the FDA website. So far, three illnesses have been reported.

US inflation eases as food and fuel costs cool

US prices rose 3.4% in the year to July, slightly lower than the 3.5% in the year to June, new figures show.

Energy remained volatile as the Middle East conflict has continued. While gasoline prices were down 2.9% in July compared to June, they were up 24.6% over the year.

Month to month, inflation rose 0.1%, mainly due to an increase in housing costs, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said. Even small moves in rent can lift the overall headline figure as it makes up a large share of household spending.

Food prices rose only slightly in July and at a slower rate than in June, while energy prices fell, offering some relief for consumers.

U.S. Stock Futures Rise After In-Line Key Inflation Data

The Department of Labor reported that the headline consumer price index (CPI) rose 0.1% in July, in contrast to a decline of 0.4% in June. However, the headline CPI print was in line with the Zacks Consensus Estimate. On the other hand, the headline CPI rose 3.4%, annually in July, down from the 3.5% annual rise in June.

Core CPI (excluding volatile items like food and energy) rose 0.2% in July after remaining unchanged in June. Like CPI, the core CPI print was in line with the Zacks Consensus Estimate. Core CPI rose 2.5% annually in July, below the 2.6% annual rise in June.

The benign CPI and core CPI data for July may enable the Fed to stay away from hiking the benchmark interest rate in its upcoming September FOMC meeting. Fed officials will consider both the July and August inflation readings before meeting in September. Before today's inflation data, the CME FedWatch tool has assigned a 50% probability for a September rate hike.

Inflation remained stubborn in July as wages slowed for workers

Inflation as measured by the consumer price index rose 0.1% from June to July, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said Wednesday, showing that costs broadly remained elevated for consumers amid volatile energy prices.

But in a troubling sign for consumers, it remains above the rate of wage growth, which as of last month was pacing at 3.2%, according to the BLS. Average hourly earnings slipped 0.2% from a year earlier, as well, the agency said Wednesday.

Inflation has been wiping out wage gains for the past four months, Heather Long, chief economist at Navy Federal Credit Union, wrote on X.

“For middle-income and lower-income Americans, this is the key issue,” Long wrote. “There will likely be some belt-tightening ahead.”

8 Probiotic Superfoods Recommended by a Nutritionist to Support Gut Health

Your gut contains trillions (yes, trillions) of bacteria. Yet it may come as a surprise that to maintain a healthy gut microbiome—which is essential for your digestion, immunity, and more—you have to eat even more healthy bacteria, known as probiotics. “It’s essential to follow a dietary pattern that encourages greater bacterial diversity,” says nutritionist Laura Parada.

Feeling lost? Keep scrolling to learn more about which probiotic foods you should add to your diet.

One of the most commonly cited probiotics is yogurt. Plain yogurt is made from milk fermented with Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus bacteria, which are both beneficial to your gut. To get yogurt’s full nutritional value, make sure you choose one labeled with “live and active cultures” and no added sugar.

Fermented food microbiome: influence on oral and gut microbiota, and human health

The fermented food microbiome comprises live microorganisms, their genetic elements and their metabolites, and represents an established dietary approach for modulating host–microbiome interactions through the consumption of fermented foods. Fermentation enhances food preservation and nutrient bioavailability, and supplies the host with probiotics, prebiotic substrates and postbiotic metabolites. These bioactive compounds can influence the oral and gut microbiota, modulate immune function and support metabolic resilience. Fibre-rich, plant-based fermented foods retain such components within structured matrices that enhance microbial viability and mucosal interactions more consistently than do fermented dairy foods. This Review explores how the fermented food microbiome affects the oral–gut axis via both transient microbial exposure and metabolite-mediated signalling. Drawing on clinical and preclinical evidence, we examine how fermented food intake alters resident microbiota and host physiology throughout the digestive tract. Despite growing evidence, the mechanisms through which fermented food might promote health remain insufficiently defined in humans owing to strain variability, inconsistency in microbial composition across fermented foods, heterogeneous clinical outcomes and regulatory ambiguity. Taking into account these limitations, we propose a roadmap to integrate the fermented food microbiome into precision nutrition as a feasible, personalized, diet-based strategy to promote health and prevent disease.

Food retail trends 2026: Why Gen Z no longer shops by aisle

The modern food industry was built around categories: snacks; dairy; bakery; frozen; beverage; confectionery; breakfast; dinner.

That’s the uncomfortable reality emerging from a profound shift in consumer behaviour now reshaping global food and beverage markets. Younger consumers aren’t simply eating differently – they’re dismantling the very framework the industry has relied on for decades to develop, merchandise and market products.

And according to Abigail Evans, senior insights manager for Retail & Strategy at Hormel Food – who previously led pipeline development and innovation for Pillsbury and Betty Crocker at General Mills, guiding teams through Consumer First Design and Lean Startup methodologies – most brands still haven’t fully grasped how deep the disruption goes.

Gen Z and Fried Chicken: The Crispy Comfort Food Boom

Family dining doesn’t have to be stressful. With smart planning, realistic expectations and a little flexibility, parents can enjoy meals out with children — from casual taverns to fine dining restaurants — in Greece and abroad.

Let’s start with a simple truth: for decades, fried chicken was never especially popular in Greece. It had its audience, of course, but it always trailed behind souvlaki, pizza and burgers — especially burgers, which evolved from humble street food into a premium culinary obsession, with celebrated chefs constantly reinventing them through bold flavor combinations and increasingly extravagant presentation. Internationally, the story was much the same — minus Greece’s beloved souvlaki, which never entered the global fast-food race.

Chipotle brings back tattoo promotion for Friday the 13th

The chain is teaming up with hip-hop musician Swae Lee to create a temporary tattoo flash sheet

Chipotle is revisiting its “tatted like a Chipotle bag” promotion for a new offer on Friday, March 13. From 3 to 4 p.m. local time, restaurants will offer a “flash” buy-one-get-one offer for fans with any tattoo — whether permanent, temporary, or drawn on.

The promotion is inspired by the Friday the 13th "flash tattoo" tradition, when tattoo shops drop "flash sheets" of small, pre-designed tattoos to commemorate the day. The tradition began on that day in 2008 when Oliver Peck, co-owner of Elm Street Tattoo in Texas, decided to tattoo the number 13 on as many people as possible within a 24-hour period. This marathon tattooing session resulted in 415 people receiving tattoos in a single day and a Guinness World Record.

NT Government disaster recovery hardship payments of $250 to be accessible from Wednesday

A $250 disaster payment for Territorians who have been without power for more than 72 hours due to Cyclone Fina will be available starting tomorrow, the NT Government has announced – which is the same amount offered to Cyclone Marcus victims more than seven years ago.

The payments are on top of the Federal Government’s disaster payments, which were announced on Monday.

The $250 payment can be accessed by anyone without power since the cyclone hit on Saturday.

“This payment will ensure that Territorians have a one-off payment to replace food in order to compensate families as the recovery continues,” Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro said on Tuesday.
