Wisconsin football mourns passing of former tight end Jack Pugh

MADISON – The Wisconsin football program is mourning the passing of Jack Pugh, a tight end who spent three years in the program.

A four-star recruit coming out of high school, Pugh was a member of the Badgers’ 2021 recruiting class. Pugh focused on basketball during his first two years at Hilliard Bradley High School near Columbus, Ohio, before joining the football team as a junior. Despite the lack of experience, Pugh received nearly two dozen offers that included Michigan, Penn State, MIchigan State, Maryland and Minnesota.

His last year with the Badgers was 2023, though he spent that season away from the program due to personal reasons. In December of '23 he announced his retirement due to health reasons.

Wisconsin football announces the passing of a former player

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – The Wisconsin Badgers football team announced the passing of a former player on Facebook on Tuesday.

Jack Pugh, a tight end from Columbus, Ohio, passed away, according to the statement.

“The Wisconsin Athletics family is deeply saddened to hear the passing of Jack Pugh,” the Badgers posted in a statement. “Jack was a positive light and brought a genuine spirit to our football program. More than that, he cared about people and was loved by his teammates and staff.”

Pugh played high school football at Hilliard Bradley and was considered a four-star prospect by 247 Sports.

Pugh redshirted for the Badgers in 2021 and appeared in one game in 2022. Pugh was named “Academic All-Big Ten” in 2022.

The Iranian women’s football team is facing an impossible situation.

As the players try to prepare for their final Women’s Asian Cup game against the Philippines on the Gold Coast this weekend, they must contend with two possible realities.

One, where they return home, and could face punishment from the Islamic Republic regime for choosing not to sing the national anthem before their first game. Or another, where they stay in Australia, and their families and loved ones could instead suffer retribution.

While Trump monetises war, Iran women’s team deliver great act of sporting heroism | Barney Ronay

In refusing to sing the national anthem these athletes have placed themselves in grave danger while Gianni Infantino sides with the American war machine

A small but telling detail from a vast and baffling chain of events. You probably saw the footage of Donald Trump’s declaration of war on Iran two weeks ago, a piece of history played out in real time, a moment where the inevitable violent deaths of thousands of people were in effect announced.

In the video Trump is shown propped up at his plinth, using that sing-song intonation he employs to appear cod-statesmanlike, faux-grave, but sounding instead like a semi-sentient robot vacuum cleaner in the seconds before it runs out of battery life. To the great people of Iran. America is backing you. Don’t go outside. It’s very dangerous out there. We will for the foreseeable future be bombing you to freedom.

The Iranian women’s football players define heroism

The plight of the Iranian national football team after being accused of treachery by a regime mouthpiece is harrowing, but it’s just one example of their extraordinary courage.

The Iranian national women’s football team’s refusal to sing the national anthem during their opening Asian Cup match against South Korea on Monday saw them described as wartime “traitors” who should be “dealt with more severely” by a commentator on state television.

Forced to play wearing a Muslim headscarf, long-sleeve shirts and pants, these women used their only available tool to give the middle finger to their Islamic Republic oppressors.

Football rule changes: More VAR power, more countdowns for 2026 World Cup

You have reached ESPN's Australian edition. Stay on current site or go to US version.

Using VAR to check corners will be an option for competitions from this summer, while the core VAR protocol has now been widened to cover second yellow cards and cards awarded to the wrong team.

The International Football Association Board (IFAB), which sets the laws of football, also approved a package of measures to counter tactics designed to disrupt the tempo of matches which come into effect this summer.

The successful introduction of the eight-second rule for goalkeepers has encouraged IFAB to go further on efforts to stop players slowing the game.

IFAB AGM: The end for long throws? New five-second time limit proposal on agenda as football's lawmakers set to meet

International Football Association Board (IFAB) to discuss rule changes at its AGM; VAR being able to intervene on second yellow cards expected to be "passed without much opposition"; new five-second rule for goal-kicks and throw-ins to be discussed

Football's lawmakers are expected to discuss the idea of a new five-second time limit for goal-kicks and throw-ins, which could put an end to the current long-throw trend in the Premier League.

They are also expected to increase the scope of VAR to include decisions on second yellow cards, when they meet in Wales on Saturday – with further proposals to crack down on time-wasting also on the agenda.

Football Daily | Cristiano Ronaldo and an argument at Al-Nassr that doesn’t make sense

For a man who is raging against the dying of the light, Cristiano Ronaldo is doing a good job of throwing a blanket over the fire. And by throwing a blanket, what Football Daily really means to say is throwing a hissy fit, a wobbly, a tantrum. The legendary footballer, reduced to something of a tap-in artist these days in a league of – at best – questionable quality, seemingly threw his toys out of his Bugatti on Sunday after deciding that not enough investment has been made in his club, Al-Nassr, in comparison to the other Saudi ones.

Cristiano Ronaldo: Al Nassr forward missing for Saudi Pro League club amid rumours he is unhappy with club's transfer activity

Cristiano Ronaldo was not named in Al Nassr's team to play Al Riyadh on Monday; the Portugal captain is said to be unhappy with Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund's running of the club; He feels other PIF-owned clubs such as Al Hilal are getting preferential treatment

Cristiano Ronaldo appears to have gone on strike at Al Nassr.

Ronaldo was missing from his team's Saudi Pro League game against Al Riyadh on Monday – with Portuguese media claiming the star is unhappy about the running of the club.

Al Nassr are one of four Saudi Pro League clubs owned by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund. Ronaldo believes the other three clubs – Al Hilal, Al Ahli and Al Ittihad – are getting preferential treatment, especially in the transfer market.

Cristiano Ronaldo left OUT of Al-Nassr squad to face Al Riyadh amid transfer frustrations at Saudi Pro League club

Portugal superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has been left out of Al-Nassr's squad for Monday's Saudi Pro League clash against Al Riyadh. Ahead of the game there had been speculation that Ronaldo would refuse to play in the match after being left frustrated by the way the PIF (Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia) is managing the club, particularly in regards to transfers.

Al-Nassr have now confirmed their team for Monday's match and Ronaldo is conspicuous by his absence. The 40-year-old is not even among the substitutes for the match between title-chasing Al-Nassr and Al-Riyadh, who are struggling at the wrong end of the table and start the game in 15th place. Victory in the match will see Al-Nassr move level on points with league leaders Al-Hilal, although they will have played one game more than their title rivals.

European football: Milan keep unbeaten run going but lose ground in title race

Christopher Nkunku scored in the 90th minute to earn Milan a 1-1 draw at Fiorentina on Sunday but, despite extending their unbeaten league run, the visitors continue to lose ground in the Serie A title race with their second stalemate in four days.

Milan remain second on 40 points, two behind Inter, who could increase their lead when they host Napoli later on Sunday, while Fiorentina are third bottom on 14 points.

“I’m not thinking about it [Inter v Napoli] at all,” the Milan manager, Massimiliano Allegri, told Dazn. “We have to think about ourselves, we have to return to winning ways, there are a lot of points still to play for.”

Rabiot dismisses talk of AC Milan drop in form

The Rossoneri are not concerned about their Scudetto hopes slipping away, with Adrien Rabiot pointing out that there is still a long way to go.

Milan let two points slip through its grasp last time out in a 1-1 draw with Genoa.

That result left Massimiliano Allegri's side three points adrift of rival Inter Milan at the top of the table, but with the Nerazzurri facing third-place Napoli on Monday (AEDT), they could have an opportunity to make up ground.

Milan has not lost in Serie A since matchday one, when it went down to Cremonese in the first league game of Allegri's second stint in charge.

Australian federation bans four soccer players over match-fixing, with suspensions up to seven years – The Athletic

Football Australia has banned four soccer players, including New Zealand international Clayton Lewis, over match-fixing offences.

Ex-Macarthur FC pair Lewis and Kearyn Baccus were handed five-year bans from the sport, backdated to May 17 when their no-fault interim suspensions began.

Lewis, 28, and Baccus, 34, have the option of reducing their respective bans by 12 months should they chose to complete 200 hours of unpaid football-related community service, with Australian soccer’s governing body saying this would “support FA’s integrity and education programs”.

Should they take that option, their respective suspensions would expire in May 2028, when Lewis will be 31 and Baccus will be 36.

Riku Danzaki, formerly of Australian A-League side Western United, and Yuta Hirayama, most recently of Melbourne-based club Bayside Argonauts, have been banned from all football-related activity for seven years, with those suspensions starting on July 1, 2025.
