    Rat poison found in HiPP baby food jar in Austria, police say

    Police in Austria have urged people to be vigilant after a sample of HiPP baby food was found to contain rat poison.

    Police in the eastern region of Burgenland said the poisoned jar of carrot and potato purée had been reported by a customer and that their baby had fortunately not consumed the food.

    The jar had apparently been tampered with, police said. Authorities believe at least one more poisoned jar is in circulation and have issued guidance on how to recognise tampered jars.

    They have not confirmed that the cases involve an alleged extortion attempt. But the police statement said the warning had come from German investigators and tampered jars had also been seized in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

    Rat poison has been found in a jar of HiPP baby food, police in Austria have said, after a recall of the product from more than 1,000 Spar supermarkets in the country over safety fears.

    Police in Burgenland said in a statement that a sample from one of the 190g (7oz) jars of carrots and potatoes baby food reported by a customer had tested positive for rat poison.

    HiPP had said on Saturday it could not be ruled out that a dangerous substance had been introduced into the product, and that its carrots and potatoes jars may have been tampered with.

    Austrian police announced Saturday that a commercially sold baby food product was found to be laced with rat poison. 

    Authorities said the tampered HiPP-brand item may have been sold in Austria, with similar products also circulating in neighboring countries, including Germany, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

    "With the assistance of the Federal Criminal Police Office, a sample of the seized product was examined on Saturday afternoon and tested positive for rat poison," the Burgenland State Criminal Police Office said.

    A large torpedo-shaped device was found last week by a fisherman near an island in the Lombok Strait, a strategically important sea lane linking Australia to the South China Sea.

    It has been identified as a Chinese undersea monitoring system designed to be moored to an anchor on the sea floor while sending data home via communication buoys deployed to the surface.

    Beijing has dismissed concerns while Jakarta says examination of the device is continuing.

    Human remains found in Tasmanian wilderness 'likely' those of Celine Cremer

    Police have provided their strongest statement yet that human bones found in the Tasmanian wilderness are likely those of missing Belgian tourist Celine Cremer.

    They say human remains recently found in the Arthur River have been "provisionally identified" as belonging to Ms Cremer.

    Despite "likely" belonging to Ms Cremer, it will be up to a coroner to make an official ruling.

    Commander Nathan Johnston said expert reports had "provided compelling evidence" that remains recently discovered in the area were likely to be those of Ms Cremer.

    Tasmania police have confirmed remains found near the state’s Philosopher Falls last month have been provisionally identified as those of missing Belgian tourist Celine Cremer.

    Police said on Friday morning that expert reports had provided “compelling evidence” that the remains were likely hers, extending their condolences to her family, who have have been awaiting confirmation of the remains since being alerted to the discovery.

    Cremer was last seen on 17 June 2023 near Cradle Mountain. The 31-year-old was reported missing by her family nine days later, sparking a major search involving police and SES ground crews, specialist swift water rescue personnel, drones and a helicopter.

    A toddler who went missing at his nursery in Edinburgh was found inside a closed grit bin in the playground.

    The two-year-old boy was missing for an hour from the Maybury Primary Early Learning and Childcare Centre on Turnhouse Road in the north west of the city.

    By the time his mother came to pick him up at 12:00 on 16 January, the police had been called.

    Council leader Jane Meagher said urgent changes had been made to prevent this happening again.

    After an hour-long search of the nursery rooms and playground, the child was discovered inside the yellow bin on the playground.

    Mum horrified as toddler found in nursery grit bin 'cold and shivering'

    A mum has told of her horror after her son was found “cold and shaking” in a grit bin at a nursery in Edinburgh.

    The incident took place at the Early Learning and Childcare service at Maybury Primary School on Turnhouse Road on the afternoon of January 16.

    According to the Edinburgh Evening News, the toddler was discovered “limp” inside the grit bin after allegedly being missing for around an hour.

    His mum, who did not want to be named, told the paper her son was found “cold, shivering and disoriented” inside the closed container.

    STV News understands that police were made aware of an unaccounted-for child within the nursery, but that the child was traced before any officers attended.

    A 19-year-old Canadian woman found dead on the beach on a popular tourist island off the Queensland coast on Monday morning was discovered surrounded by a pack of dingoes.

    But despite confirming her body had been “touched and interfered with” by the wild canids on K’gari (formerly known as Fraser Island), police say they will await a postmortem before speculating as to the cause of her death.

    Wide Bay Burnett District Patrol Insp Paul Algie told reporters Monday afternoon that the young woman had been working at a backpacker hostel on the eastern beaches.

    A woman has died near a popular tourist destination on K'gari, formerly known as Fraser Island.

    Police Inspector Paul Algie said the 19-year-old Canadian citizen had been working at a backpacker's hostel on the island, off the south-east Queensland coast, for the past six weeks.

    He said the woman's friends and coworkers told police she went swimming soon after 5am on Monday.

    Two men driving along K'gari's eastern beach saw the woman's body north of the Maheno shipwreck about 6:35am and alerted emergency services.

    A young woman found dead near the Maheno shipwreck on K’gari was “interfered with” by dingoes but may have died by other causes.

    The 19-year-old woman was found unresponsive on 75 Mile Beach on the eastern side of the island, formerly known as Fraser Island, about 6.35am on Monday.

    Police are now investigating whether she drowned or was attacked by dingoes.

    A body has been found among the wreckage of an Indonesian plane that lost contact mid-flight. 

    There were seven crew members and three passengers on board the plane, which was chartered by Indonesia's Marine Affairs and Fisheries Ministry to conduct air surveillance on fisheries.

    The head of South Sulawesi's rescue ‌agency said 1,200 personnel would be deployed to search for the missing people on board the flight.

    Suspected human remains have been uncovered during property works at a home on Phillip Island.

    Police and emergency services were called to a property in Silverleaves on Thursday morning after remains, “believed to be human”, were found.

    “It is understood plumbing works were being undertaken when the bones were unearthed about 8.35am,” police said in a statement.

    Police tape surrounded the Hazelwood Court property on Thursday afternoon, with officers and a crime scene services van on the street.

    Police were also seen standing on the lawn at the rear of the home.
