Muir fourth again after agonising tumble as Oldham wins big air gold for Canada

Briton, fourth again, says: ‘I really did have to go for it’

This time, Kirsty Muir must surely have believed that a Winter Olympic medal was in her grasp. But as a thrilling big air competition reached its denouement, an Italian with no anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee came down a 180‑feet ramp and drove a stake through the Briton’s heart.

It all looked so promising when the 21-year-old from Aberdeen landed a stunning left double 1620, with four and a half rotations, to move into the medal positions after two of the three rounds. However, with just four jumps of the competition remaining, Flora Tabanelli, who tore her ACL in November, did the same trick as Muir but only better to score 94.25 points to steal the bronze medal.

Winter Olympics 2026 | Women's Big Air Finals | Medalists, Results & Recap

White gold is not what most of the Olympic athletes are generally looking for at the moment, but it arrived aplenty nonetheless. It was blower today across the Alps, though there were a fair few avalanches too. It was a good day for those of us with the morning off but it doesn't tend to make for ideal competition conditions. Unfortunately, by the time evening rolled around, it was blowy rather than blower, with wind sweeping through the Olympic venue. There was an hour-ish delay, featuring guys with snowblowers and other creative ways of getting rid of snow. Mathilde Gremaud and Anouk Andraska, both Swiss finalists, crashed in training and didn't make it to the start gate. It was a challenging day all around but the ladies put down a storming final nonetheless, it was super exciting right to the last jump.

FA Cup fourth round: 10 things to look out for this weekend

Burnley have the chance of a Cup run, Leicester fear an unwelcome repeat and Brighton fans get a raw deal

Chelsea have kept two clean sheets in 10 games since appointing Liam Rosenior as head coach last month. Repeated doziness at the back has cost them. They have held commanding advantages against Charlton, Crystal Palace, Wolves and Leeds, only to give away silly goals. It is a bad habit and proved costly when a 2-0 lead was squandered during Tuesday’s draw with Leeds. Rosenior was livid afterwards, and is waiting for a consistent performance. Chelsea travel to Hull , Rosenior’s former club, on Friday night. They will surely advance against Championship opponents, but how they do it will matter. It is time for them to get serious. There’s no doubt that Tennis Australia chief executive Craig Tiley has his hands full this year.

In the midst of the Australian Open, Tiley has been the subject of unrelenting speculation over his future (suggesting he is in the frame to run the US Open), and is facing a star-studded player push for better pay and conditions.

All par for the course, you could say, given the administrative stalwart’s pay packet.
