    Minneapolis restaurant that offered free meals to protest ICE raids announces closure

    Modern Times Café, a Minneapolis restaurant that attempted to eliminate prices, has announced it will be closing for good by the end of the year.

    “For the last six years, I’ve been trying to prove that Modern Times can continue to exist,” owner Dylan Alverson wrote on social media Saturday. “I’ve exhausted every option without compromising the core fundamentals that make Modern Times what it is.”

    He added that he plans to spend the next two months celebrating the 16-year-old business and discussing ways for a business like his to continue.

    “The only way for places like Modern Times to exist in the future is to actively challenge the reasons why it can no longer exist,” Alverson wrote.

    Twin Cities businesses helping the community

    a pair of business owners in Minneapolis are helping their community during the immigration crackdown in the state. FOX 9's Maury Glover has more. 

    MINNEAPOLIS (FOX 9) – Modern Times Café once served free food to the community as federal immigration agents flooded Minneapolis. Now, the restaurant is closing by the end of the year. 

    Modern Times Café owner, Dylan Alverson, posted on the restaurant's Facebook page that after nearly 16 years of operations, they are closing by the end of the year. 

    "For the last 6 years, I’ve been trying to prove that Modern Times can continue to exist. I’ve exhausted every option without compromising the core fundamentals that make Modern Times what it is. Because of this, we have made the choice to close at the end of the year. This has been an incredibly difficult decision and one that did not come lightly. I announce this decision now, with the hope that we can spend the next two plus months celebrating the nearly 16 years that Modern Times has stood for creativity over cost, kindness over profit, and uncompromising values as a business in this country," Alverson said in part on Facebook.

    Modern Times Cafe closing at end of year after providing 30,000 free meals in wake of ICE surge

    A south Minneapolis staple that made headlines after offering free meals in response to Operation Metro Surge will be closing its doors.

    Modern Times Cafe will close at the end of the year in what the owner says is an "incredibly difficult decision."

    "I announce this decision now, with the hope that we can spend the next two plus months celebrating the nearly 16 years that Modern Times has stood for creativity over cost, kindness over profit, and uncompromising values as a business in this country," owner Dylan Alverson said.

    The cafe rebranded as Post Modern Times and began to serve free meals in January after a Border Patrol agent shot and killed Alex Pretti in the streets of Minneapolis.

    After four decades as a Commonwealth Bank customer, Trevor Vienet is changing banks.

    That is because CBA has changed its association with the Qantas Frequent Flyer program ahead of the credit and debit surcharge ban announced by the Reserve Bank of Australia.

    It is the lesser-known side effect of the changes that begin on October 1 because banks' revenue will drop as they reduce the amount they charge businesses to bank with them.

    The Commonwealth Bank has introduced a new in-house rewards system called Yello, which Mr Vienet is not eligible for.

    Australia surcharge ban: Why councils across the country could face a $200 million a year hit from Thursday

    The looming ban to surcharges on credit and debit cards could cost Australian councils up to $400,000 a year each, totalling $200 million across the entire country, a councillor has warned.

    On Thursday, the Reserve Bank of Australia will remove surcharges on any payment made with card, which will mean the advertised price on a product will be how much it will cost.

    While the RBA claims the move will save Aussie consumers up to $1.6 billion in hidden fees, there are concerns the major banks will simply pass on the costs to businesses and other vendors instead of absorbing the blow.

    Rodolfo Bellato returns at UFC Vegas 121 after spine surgery

    Rodolfo Bellato is ready to step back inside the Octagon after a difficult moment in his career.     Rising light heavyweights collide on Saturday night, as Rodolfo Bellato faces Christian Edwards at UFC Fight Night: Rosas Jr. vs. Barcelos inside the Meta APEX.

    Bellato (13–3–1, 2–1–1 UFC [1 NC]) rebounded from his first Octagon loss with a first-round stoppage win over Luke Fernandez at UFC 326 in March. Edwards (8–5, 0–1 UFC) fell just short in his promotional debut in May, dropping a split decision to Modestas Bukauskas.

    Bellato enters as a -180 moneyline favorite on DraftKings Sportsbook. Edwards is a +150 underdog, with the fight total set at O/U 1.5 rounds.

    Travellers taking more than a laptop, handbag or backpack on Jetstar flights will have to pay extra for carry-on baggage from February next year.

    The budget airline has announced it will charge for cabin luggage in overhead lockers, allowing only a small under-seat bag at no extra cost.

    Charging passengers for overhead baggage could backfire on Jetstar, with the low-cost carrier accused of a cash grab.

    From February 2, Jetstar will lift its 7kg carry-on weight limit in favour of a size-based carry-on baggage model adopted by several European low-cost carriers such as Ryan Air.

    Passengers will be able to bring one small, under-the-seat bag up to 10kg, but anything larger than a backpack, handbag or laptop bag will incur a charge.

    Jetsar: Mixed reactions in Australia as airline introduces fees for overhead carry-on luggage

    Australians have responded with a mixture of outrage and support after budget airline Jetstar announced it would start charging for the use of overhead lockers.

    From February the airline is scrapping its 7kg (15.4lb) limit on hand luggage. Instead all passengers will be allowed a smaller bag that can fit under the seat in front and the option to pay for space for a larger bag in the overhead locker and priority boarding.

    The move comes after "extensive research and feedback" and is similar to the policies of other low cost airlines, Jetstar said.

    It was met with a mixed response by social media users, with some asking whether the airline would also start charging customers to use the toilet.

    Anthony Albanese is celebrating an agreement signed with Vanuatu this morning, the Nakamal treaty, which has been ten months in the making.

    Critically, the agreement states Vanuatu’s critical infrastructure will remain free from militarisation and the Pacific nation should not be used as a foreign military base.

    Some Australian households will soon be able to access at least three hours of free electricity each day. 

    The Solar Sharer Offer (SSO) is set to be introduced in New South Wales, South Australia and south-east Queensland from July 1.

    With some providers already offering periods of free electricity in the middle of the day, what do these new changes mean for you and how can you make the most of a free window of electricity at home? 

    For a start, you'll have to be in NSW, South Australia or south-east Queensland to take advantage of the scheme, because it will only apply to people in areas covered by the Australian Energy Regulator's Default Market Offer.

    Some households can get free electricity from Wednesday. Are you eligible?

    SBS acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of Country and their connections and continuous care for the skies, lands and waterways throughout Australia.

    Some Australians in the country's east will soon be able to receive free electricity for three hours per day, as part of the federal government's Solar Sharer Offer.

    Starting Wednesday, the scheme is designed to give more households access to solar power when it's most abundant during the day, the scheme will be available to renters and homeowners living in NSW, South Australia and south-east Queensland, all of which are covered by the Default Market Offer (DMO).

    Set by the Australian Energy Regulator, the DMO is the maximum price that energy retailers can charge residential and small business customers on a standing offer electricity contract. Other states and territories have their own systems.
