Moving Forward, The Knee Is Still a Big Issue for Fritz

Taylor Fritz will likely be the top-ranked American (barring an upset of Jannik Sinner by Ben Shelton) after the Australian Open. But the American’s future is hard to predict after that, as a lingering knee issue has clouded the possibilities.

Fritz, who was defeated by Lorenzo Musetti in straight sets on Day 9, remains hopeful that he can simultaneously rehab his knee tendinitis and play through the season. But if we read into his words, there doesn’t seem to be a ton of clarity.

He entered the Australian Open thinking that if things didn’t improve, he may have to shut down his season for a stretch and focus 100 percent on getting the knee right. The knee clearly isn’t right, but the will to push on is still there for Fritz.

Playing through injuries, Taylor Fritz blames short off-season for slow start at Australian Open

Fritz began the year with a knee injury and eluded to other physical issues after a four-set win over Valentin Royer.

MELBOURNE, Australia—Tennis players are thought to be at their fittest when the season first gets underway, but Taylor Fritz pointed to the four-week off-season as responsible for more injured players at the Australian Open.

“Maybe the season is too long, I don't know,” Fritz said sarcastically after advancing past Valentin Royer, 7-6 (5), 5-7, 6-1, 6-3. “Maybe four weeks isn't enough to fully get healthy of all injuries.

“You know, it is what it is. You know, I think I laid a lot of groundwork in the off-season to get healthy. But at the same time the off-season is so short, you need to be like training hard in the off-season or else you come into the year feeling like you've not played enough matches or had enough time on court, which is very much how I feel.

Fritz's girlfriend, fashion influencer Morgan Riddle, usually steals the most headlines for this sports power couple with her flawless match-day fits and fantastic looks throughout the tennis majors each season.

And that trend has continued for the 2026 Australian Open, where most of us expect Fritz to lose to the 24-time major winning Djokovic, who is undefeated against Fritz, 28, at 11-0, with the most recent victory coming in the quarterfinals of the 2025 US Open.

The Australian Open has already crowned its new queen despite the fact the women's title won't be decided for more than a week. And Morgan Riddle is sitting pretty on the throne.

Taylor Fritz has made a habit of riding alongside his girlfriend to most major tennis tournaments in recent years. The influencer almost always accompanies her beau to Grand Slam competitions, where she regularly posts 'A Day In the Life' content, often focused around her fashion and what she's wearing throughout.

And the first major of 2026 is no different, with Riddle accompanying her long-term boyfriend in Melbourne. Ninth seed Fritz is due back in action against Vit Kopriva in the second round of the men's singles on Thursday as he looks to clinch his maiden Grand Slam gong.

Injured world No.6 Taylor Fritz has been given a huge reality check ahead of the Australian Open, suffering a shock three-set loss to Argentinian Sebastian Baez at the United Cup.

But the news was much better for world No.3 Coco Gauff, who was at her ruthless best in a 6-1 6-1 demolition of Solana Sierra in Perth on Saturday night before teaming up with Christian Harrison to guide the US to a 6-4 6-1 win in the deciding mixed doubles.

Health Is The Big Issue for Fritz in ’26

Taylor Fritz has become a Grand Slam finalist and cracked the Top 5 in the last two seasons, proving that he is America’s top dog and a threat to go deep in every tournament he plays.

But the wear and tear of the last three seasons – which included 229 matches, an average of more than 76 a season – has taken a toll on the Southern Californian.

So much, in fact, that Fritz now says the biggest key to unlocking future success on tour will be staying health. No small feat.

“I think over the last four years I feel like I’ve continued to improve a lot as a player and just a much better tennis player,” he told reporters in Perth, where he is competing in United Cup. “I think the one thing that I’ve been noticing now is the body just has to be able to keep up with it.

Fritz struggling with 'serious tendonitis' ahead of Australian Open

World number six Taylor Fritz says he is battling a knee issue ahead of the Australian Open, spending much of the off-season trying to fix the problem.

The American had a rock-solid 2025, winning in Eastbourne and Stuttgart and qualifying for the ATP Finals, despite dealing with tendonitis.

"I couldn't really (target) anything," he said on the ATP Tour website on what he worked on during the off-season.

"My goal was really just to try and rehab my knee. I still have pretty serious tendonitis and that's something that takes a really long time to get rid of."

Despite the inflammation lingering, the American said he does not feel it was serious enough yet to warrant a complete break from the tour.

TURIN, Italy — Alex de Minaur claimed a maiden ATP Finals victory that gave the Australian a chance of making the semifinals on Thursday.

De Minaur beat Taylor Fritz 7-6 (3), 6-3 for his first victory in six matches at the season-ending event for the top eight players, following his debut last year.

The seventh-seeded De Minaur needed a straight sets win to stay in contention for a semifinal spot, which he will secure if Carlos Alcaraz beats Lorenzo Musetti in the late match on Thursday.

Alex de Minaur desperately needs a pick-me-up in what could well prove his last match of the season when he faces Taylor Fritz while still seeking his first ever victory in the ATP Finals.

Even a straight-sets triumph over the American world no.4 on Thursday may well not be enough for the dejected Australian to somehow squeeze his way into the last-four of the end-of-season championship in Turin.
