The August full moon for 2026 is one of intrigue. Rising in dreamy Pisces and coinciding with a near-total partial lunar eclipse, it’s being dubbed a “blood moon”.Yet another monumental celestial event this month, Australians will, once again, have a different experience from our Northern Hemisphere counterparts.Below, everything you need to know about the August full moon and what it means astrologically.

The August full moon in Pisces falls on Friday, August 28, 2026. For those in Australia, the full moon will reach its peak during daylight hours, ranging from 12.18pm in Western Australia to 2.18pm along the east coast states of New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria.The full moon coincides with a near-total partial lunar eclipse which falls between August 27 and 28, depending on your time zone. At its peak, around 93 to 96 per cent of the Moon’s diameter will sit within Earth’s darkest shadow, according to NASA.

‘Blood moon’ lunar eclipse will cross U.S. Thursday, just weeks after solar eclipse — here’s when to watch

Two weeks after a total solar eclipse wowed skywatchers in southern Europe, a near-total lunar eclipse is set to put on a show Thursday night for people across North and South America.

Lunar eclipses occur when Earth slips between the sun and the moon and casts a shadow on the lunar surface. During this week’s event, nearly the entire moon — 96.2% at the eclipse’s peak — will be shrouded in Earth’s shadow.

Weather permitting, skywatchers in the continental U.S. will have some of the best views. The eclipse will also be visible elsewhere in North America, South America, parts of Europe and Africa.

Young star wins Rising Star race over teammate as four-man voting tussle revealed

Jagga Smith has claimed the 2026 AFL Rising Star, becoming just the second Blue to win the award.

On Tuesday night Smith, the pick three of the 2024 Draft, joined Sam Walsh (2019) as Carlton’s only winner.

Remarkably, Smith drew 54 votes to win the award – the same number as Walsh, and the equal-most since North’s Harry Sheezel in 2023.

Only Collingwood’s Nick Daicos (60 votes) in 2022 has polled higher in a Rising Star count, with Smith following in Daicos’ footsteps as the second Oakleigh product to win the award.

Jagga Smith has been crowned the 2026 Telstra AFL Rising Star, receiving the Ron Evans Medal at tonight’s AFL Awards

Jagga Smith has been crowned the 2026 Telstra AFL Rising Star, receiving the Ron Evans Medal at tonight’s AFL Awards.

Smith won the award with 54 votes, ahead of teammate Harry Dean (39 votes), the West Coast Eagles’ Willem Duursma (29 votes) and North Melbourne’s Cooper Trembath (28 votes).

The 20-year-old received the Ron Evans Medal and $20,000 thanks to Telstra, after polling a maximum five votes from 10 of the 11-member All Australian panel.

Smith became only the second Carlton player to win the award, after Sam Walsh also polled 54 out of a possible 55 votes in 2019.

FINALS FIXTURE: Full Wildcard Round schedule, ticket details confirmed

The AFL has confirmed the schedule for wildcard round of the 2026 Toyota AFL Finals Series

THE FULL schedule for an historic wildcard round to kick off the 2026 Toyota AFL Finals Series has been confirmed.

After the completion of round 24, the final 10 – and the two wildcard final match-ups – have been locked in.

On Friday, August 28 the Western Bulldogs will host Collingwood at the MCG from 7.40pm AEST in the first of the wildcard finals.

Melbourne will then host Carlton at the MCG on Saturday, August 29 from 7.35pm AEST.

Tickets for the the wildcard final between the Western Bulldogs and Collingwood will go on sale from 10am on Tuesday, August 25, while tickets for the game between Melbourne and Carlton go on sale from 10am on Wednesday, August 26 (full details below).

AFL wildcard matches and times confirmed

Melbourne and Carlton meet in the second wildcard round match on Saturday evening.

Both wildcard matches will be played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Carlton are confident they can "do some damage" in the AFL finals from 10th spot as they eye a wildcard round clash with Melbourne.

Josh Fraser's men will take on the Demons on Saturday night at the MCG in the second of two knockout wildcard clashes next weekend under the new format.

The Western Bulldogs will meet Collingwood in the first wildcard match on Friday night, also at the MCG.

Melbourne will face Carlton in a Wildcard Final at the MCG

MELBOURNE will host Carlton in Wildcard Final One at the MCG on Saturday night.

The Demons secured seventh place on the ladder with 60 points across the home-and-away season, earning the opportunity to play finals in front of the red and blue faithful.

As part of the new Toyota AFL Finals Series, teams that finish between seventh and 10th on the ladder will contest Wildcard Finals for the right to progress to an Elimination Final.

Melbourne’s seventh-place finish sees it face 10th-placed Carlton at the MCG.

The highest-ranked Wildcard Final winner will then travel to face the sixth-placed side in an Elimination Final, while the lower-ranked winner will meet the team that finished fifth.

Joyce wants broader access to super for housing and hardship; Hanson says the system is “broken”. What’s broken is their logic. If people cannot afford food, rent or a home, tackle those problems – don’t hand them a crowbar and point them towards their retirement savings. COVID should have taught us the danger of treating super as readily available cash: more than $36 billion was withdrawn, much of it by people who could least afford to sacrifice future returns. Existing early-access provisions cover cases of genuine hardship. Every dollar raided today means less at retirement and years of lost returns. It simply shifts today’s problem into the future and makes it bigger. Nor does it fix housing affordability. It doesn’t build a single home; it just pours more money into the market, pushing prices higher. One Nation’s apparent unfamiliarity with what drives inflation is becoming something of a theme. It is painfully clear that Hanson and her clueless treasury spokesperson understand remarkably little about superannuation. Carlton has appointed current caretaker coach Josh Fraser as full-time senior coach for 2027 and beyond.

Josh Fraser will be confirmed as Carlton’s new senior coach on Tuesday.

The Carlton board met on Monday to ratify the recommendation that Fraser be confirmed as coach and two sources with knowledge of the appointment confirmed to this masthead that he would be announced as the person to replace Michael Voss.

Former VFL coach Fraser, who was appointed as caretaker when Voss departed in May, has overseen a stunning transformation of the team, winning 10 games and drawing another from 13 matches in charge.

Final details of the length of his contract were being finalised, but a source with knowledge of the situation said it was likely to be a three-year deal.

Dad granted full custody after four years in court returns children to mum

Rebecca* was given just over four hours to hand her two children, aged 4 and 7, to her ex-husband John* and was forbidden under court order from seeing them again until they were 18.

She said she almost collapsed from shock when she read the Family Court orders giving John full custody, despite serious domestic violence allegations against him and her being the children's primary carer since birth.

Speaking on Tuesday at the MCG ahead of his 250th game in Gather Round, Melksham praised the energy that new coach Steven King has brought to Melbourne which has resulted in a 3-1 start to 2026.
