    Football figures gather at Lakeside Stadium for South Melbourne FC event

    South Melbourne FC welcomed about 200 guests to Lakeside Stadium for a special pre-game event ahead of its Australia Cup clash against Fremantle City over the weekend.

    Held in the stadium’s VIP function room, the Pre-Game Lounge marked the second consecutive Australia Cup match in which the historic Melbourne club hosted a gathering bringing together figures from football, government and the wider community.

    Among those attending were Football Australia CEO Martin Kugeler, Perth Glory and Italian club Catania majority owner Ross Pelligra, Victorian MPs Anthony Cianflone and Nina Taylor, and City of Port Phillip Councillor Alex Makin.

    Representatives from Melbourne football clubs, former South Melbourne FC players, media representatives and members of the club’s board were also in attendance.

    South Melbourne punched its ticket to the next stage, edging out a spirited Fremantle from Western Australia on penalties – all on a night framed by an impressive pre match function organised by the club’s board

    Another big night for the Hellas faithful, who flocked in to back their side in its push for a place in the Australia Cup quarter finals.

    It was a mission that Sinisa Cohadzic’s players ultimately completed, albeit with considerable difficulty.

    The breakthrough came from the spot, Hellas prevailing in the shootout after 120 minutes packed with drama, passion and six goals.

    In yet another display of the club’s connections, reach and influence within the microcosm of Australian football – and more broadly within the community – the board staged a polished, high profile event attended by notable figures from sport and politics.

    Walker’s Gather Round plea

    Taylor Walker has weighed in on Gather Round as it returns to SA for a fourth year.

    Adelaide forward Taylor Walker has made a plea to the AFL to continue hosting Gather Round in South Australia.

    This season’s Gather Round was officially launched on Wednesday, marking the final year of the current hosting agreement of all nine games being played in SA.

    Speaking at the launch at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital alongside Carlton’s Harry McKay, Walker said Gather Round had been a huge success and South Australia should retain it.

    “We are pretty chuffed that we’ve been able to have it for four years, and hopefully we can get a deal done for a long period of time,” Walker said.

    SA premier wants 'certainty' beyond a one-year Gather Round deal

    Ahead of South Australia's last confirmed year of AFL Gather Round, Premier Peter Malinauskas says he is trying to secure the event's long-term future in the state.

    The AFL chief executive has not put a timeline on when negotiations will be finalised.

    Gather Round is being held from April 9 to 12 across three venues, including one in the Barossa Valley.

    South Australia's premier is continuing to push for a long-term contract to host future Gather Rounds, but has hosed down the likelihood of an announcement being made this weekend.

    Mr Trump is expected to provide more detail about the board at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

    Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has agreed to join US President Donald Trump's "Board of Peace" but other countries including Norway and Sweden have rejected invitations.

    The board, chaired by Mr Trump, was originally envisioned as a small group of world leaders overseeing the Gaza ceasefire plan.
