Viva Energy's chief executive, Scott Wyatt, has defended a massive jump in the company's refining profit margins amid surging fuel prices.

Earlier this week, Viva reported a Geelong refining margin of $US22 a barrel over the first quarter, only one month of which was affected by the spike in oil prices associated with the Iran conflict.

Those margins were almost three times higher than the $US7.90 a barrel recorded in the first quarter of last year, and come on top of the rise in crude oil prices, which are up about $US30 a barrel since the beginning of the Iran war on February 28.

Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge admits he has no idea when Tim English will be available after the ruck star was ruled out of the AFL clash with Geelong with an ongoing knee injury.

There were reports English could make a faster-than-expected return against the Cats at GMHBA Stadium on Friday night to relieve inexperienced back-up Louis Emmett.

A fire has broken out at one of Australia's two remaining oil refineries, with emergency services responding to reports of "explosions and flames".

The blaze was not yet under control as of early Thursday morning, according to Fire Rescue Victoria.

A "significant" fire has broken out at one of Australia's two currently operational oil refineries, with residents in parts of Geelong told to stay indoors due to smoke.

A watch and act has since been issued for a number of suburbs in Geelong, with residents being warned to close windows to keep out hazardous smoke.

GMHBA Health Update | Geelong Provide Information on Dangerfield and Other Key Cats

The Geelong Football Club has provided a health update ahead of the Cats' Round 3 clash with Adelaide

The Cats can provide the following GMHBA Health Update ahead of Geelong’s Thursday night blockbuster against Adelaide.

Patrick Dangerfield will be sidelined for the next 1-2 weeks with a calf injury coming out of the Round 1 clash with the Dockers.

Geelong Cats EGM Football, Andrew Mackie said, “Pat reported some calf soreness following the match against Fremantle, with subsequent assessment and scans confirming a low grade calf injury.

“Given Pat missed our opening round game with a similar complaint, we’ll take a cautious approach and get some loading into his training with his return to play at this stage earmarked for Easter Monday, or the week after.”

Third Pies change as debutant named; injury crisis plagues blockbuster — Team Tips

Adelaide’s tough task away from home this Thursday just got even tougher as an injury crisis begins to plague West Lakes.

Plus, Collingwood has confirmed a huge double defensive boost this Friday night for their clash with GWS. MORE IN ROUND 3 TEAM TIPS.

Team Tips: Fresh off their early bye, Geelong is unlikely to make a heap of changes from their impressive Round 1 win over Fremantle. They look likely to welcome back off-season recruit James Worpel from a finger infection that kept him out of the clash, which would create a squeeze that could leave the likes of recent debutant Mitch Edwards and Jhye Clark on the fringes. That being said, Patrick Dangerfield is set to miss at least 1-2 weeks after re-aggravating a recent calf injury, the club confirmed. In the reserves’ Round 1 VFL clash, emergency Ollie Henry kicked 5.2 to push for a recall after his axing. He was well-assisted up forward by Jay Polkinghorne (4.6) and Oli Wilthsire (4.1), while George Stevens and Mitch Knevitt were unsurprisingly among the best midfielders with stuffed stat lines to show for it. Polkinghorne post-game showed early signs of overloading to his foot however, which the club will manage with precaution. With the exception of Tyson Stengle (personal reasons/conditioning), the club’s best 30 or so players are all fit and firing in ominous signs for Adelaide this Thursday night.

Captain Patrick Dangerfield will miss Geelong's game against Adelaide and could also sit out the Cats' bumper clash with Hawthorn after suffering a calf strain.

Elsewhere, Western Bulldogs stalwart Tom Liberatore will miss up to five weeks with a hamstring strain while Collingwood skipper Darcy Moore and fellow backman Jeremy Howe could return from injury against GWS.

Dangerfield, who turns 36 next month, pulled up sore from Geelong's comeback win over Fremantle and has been ruled out for at least a week after scans revealed a low-grade injury.

See what Geelong's head coach had to say following Saturday's clash with Fremantle

I think the most important thing was the players had belief that if we did shift a few things, that we could turn the momentum of the game.

But that is a rare situation, to have that belief when you have been so badly outplayed.

They were dominant and it is not as if we predicted that start, but we were well aware of the threat. They have been building their list and their best 23 for a long time, and they are full of really good players.

TEAMS: Cats star sidelined, new Blues get a chance

The teams have been announced for Wednesday night's AAMI Community Series match between the Blues and Cats at Ikon Park

GEELONG star Bailey Smith will miss Wednesday night's AAMI Community Series game against Carlton due to a calf injury, but the Cats say the All-Australian should be fit to face Gold Coast in Opening Round.

Smith is a notable absentee from a Cats side that has been boosted by the returns of Patrick Dangerfield, Max Holmes, Tom Stewart and Lawson Humphries, who all missed last week's match simulation against Hawthorn due to AAMI AFL Origin.

Mark Blicavs, Shaun Mannagh, Jack Martin and Zach Guthrie also return after missing the Hawks hit-out, while Tanner Bruhn will play his first game in 12 months after he missed the Hawks game due to illness.
