Vuelta a España: giant hail forces stage three abandonment in Pyrenees
A torrential hailstorm in the French Pyrenees forced the abandonment of the â third stage of the Vuelta a España on Monday.
With 15 kilometres (9.32 miles) remaining of the 174km route â from Gruissan to Font-Romeu, the âskies darkened as the peloton neared the top of the Col de Mont-Louis and huge hailstones began â bouncing off the tarmac and pelting the riders.
Mats Wenzel (Kern Pharma) and Lorenzo Fortunato (XDS Astana) were 25 seconds ahead â of the peloton when the elements intervened as the race leader and favourite âTadej Pogacar was seen indicating âto the peloton âto pull off the course.
Bedraggled riders were then seen getting off their âbikes and shuffling into a hotel for shelter, leaving fans frustrated at the finish where thick layers of hail blanketed the road.

The IGESA Village Club Mont-Louis Les Sorbiers has been inundated with reviews since Tadej Pogačar and the Vuelta a España peloton mobbed into its lobby to shelter from golf ball-sized hailstones on Monday.

Stage 3 cancelled due to weather conditions
As the riders were heading towards the first summit finish of La Vuelta 26 in Font-Romeu (France), they had to stop and seek shelter because of hail and extreme weather. With safety the main concern, the decision was made to cancel stage 3. The race will resume on Tuesday with a 104.8 km route around Andorra la Vella.
