    Vuelta a España: giant hail forces stage three abandonment in Pyrenees

    A torrential hailstorm in the French Pyrenees forced the abandonment of the ⁠third stage of the Vuelta a España on Monday.

    With 15 kilometres (9.32 miles) remaining of the 174km route ⁠from Gruissan to Font-Romeu, the ​skies darkened as the peloton neared the top of the Col de Mont-Louis and huge hailstones began ⁠bouncing off the tarmac and pelting the riders.

    Mats Wenzel (Kern Pharma) and Lorenzo Fortunato (XDS Astana) were 25 seconds ahead ⁠of the peloton when the elements intervened as the race leader and favourite ​Tadej Pogacar was seen indicating ‌to the peloton ‌to pull off the course.

    Bedraggled riders were then seen getting off their ‌bikes and shuffling into a hotel for shelter, leaving fans frustrated at the finish where thick layers of hail blanketed the road.

    The IGESA Village Club Mont-Louis Les Sorbiers has been inundated with reviews since Tadej Pogačar and the Vuelta a España peloton mobbed into its lobby to shelter from golf ball-sized hailstones on Monday.

    Some look legit, some are hilariously fake. Some blur the boundary between both.

    A user named “Tadej Pogačar” was keen to share their thanks after they piled through the front door when an apocalyptic hailstorm forced the cancellation of stage 3 of La Vuelta.

    Stage 3 cancelled due to weather conditions

    As the riders were heading towards the first summit finish of La Vuelta 26 in Font-Romeu (France), they had to stop and seek shelter because of hail and extreme weather. With safety the main concern, the decision was made to cancel stage 3. The race will resume on Tuesday with a 104.8 km route around Andorra la Vella.

    In 2025, Professor Bruce Houghton retired from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa after 25 years as the Gordon A. Macdonald Chair of Volcanology. He was only the second person to hold the position in the past half century. With his retirement, let’s reflect on a career that helped shape how scientists understand explosive eruptions, volcanic hazards, and how communities live with active volcanoes.

    Born and educated in New Zealand, Houghton established himself as a leading volcanologist at the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences (GNS) New Zealand before joining the University of Hawaiʻi in 2000. In Hawaii, he became not only a researcher and professor, but also the State Volcanologist.

    On Ross Island in the Ross Sea, a deep bay in Antarctica, Mount Erebus fumes about 1,350 kilometers (840 miles) from the Geographic South Pole. The world's southernmost active volcano, it bubbles with a permanent lake of blazing lava.

    And in the gas constantly pouring forth from this gate to the underworld, scientists found microscopic particles of crystalline, elemental gold.

    According to a 1991 research paper, published in Geophysical Research Letters, Erebus belches out about 80 grams (2.8 ounces) of microscopic gold dust per day, scattering it as far as 1,000 kilometers away – maybe even farther.

    Antarctica’s most threatened glacier is about be further destabilised, as the floating ice shelf in front of Thwaites glacier is set to break away.

    Antarctica’s Thwaites Ice Shelf is tearing apart as collapse nears

    The floating ice shelf in front of Antarctica’s Thwaites glacier is on the verge of breaking away, with satellite images showing alarming signs that the Thwaites Eastern Ice Shelf will imminently detach. The shelf is already tearing apart around the point that has helped hold it in place.

    Thwaites is the world’s widest glacier, about the size of Britain, and it already accounts for 4 per cent of all global sea-level rise. If it collapses, scientists expect a domino effect through the entire West Antarctic ice sheet, which could add 3.3 metres to sea levels.

    The eastern shelf is not a small fringe of ice. It covers about 1,500 square kilometres and is roughly 350 metres thick, but by some measures the break-up is already under way. Huge fractures are opening around the pinning point and along the grounding line, the boundary where the glacier meets the ocean and starts to float.

    Hobart’s St David’s Park losing 88-year-old giant sequoias this week

    Two giant sequoias that have stood in Hobart’s St David’s Park for almost nine decades are being cut down this week after efforts to save the dying trees failed.

    The City of Hobart’s tree care team started removing the sequoias today, with the work expected to wrap up by Friday.

    Both trees were planted in 1937 to mark the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth and have been part of the park’s landscape ever since.

    The council said the trees have been in decline since autumn last year and haven’t responded to repeated treatment.

    Hobart Begins Removal of Historic Giant Sequoias in St David’s Park
