    Greater Western Sydney holds on to get a crucial win over Port Adelaide and keep its slim finals hopes alive

    GREATER Western Sydney's finals flame is still flickering after a gutsy 12-point away win against Port Adelaide.

    The Giants, with Stephen Coniglio and Jake Stringer booting three goals each, triumphed 10.15 (75) to 9.9 (63) at Adelaide Oval on Saturday night.

    GWS sits in 12th spot only one win outside the top 10 with home games against Gold Coast, West Coast, and an away encounter against Adelaide, to come.

    The Giants broke the 15th-placed Power with a stretch of six consecutive goals either side of half-time en route to a ninth victory of the season.

    As the GWS captain continues to weigh up his future, comments have been made regarding a possible exit and how it could destroy the club.

    Jordan Lewis said on Fox Footy earlier this week that the Giants would struggle as a club post the Toby era.

    “A lot has been made about the Gold Coast Suns and the culture and what that is doing. But, the talk around Toby Greene leaving the Giants, I think that destroys the club,” Lewis said on Monday night.

    HAWTHORN will be aiming to strengthen its grip on a top-four spot when it takes on Greater Western Sydney at the MCG on Friday night.

    The Hawks (9-1-4) bounced back from a heartbreaking defeat to the Western Bulldogs before their mid-season bye when dominating Gold Coast at centre ball-ups and running away with the game in the final term.

    RD 16 TEAM: Three changes for Friday night

    A trio of Hawks have been recalled to face the GIANTS.

    Flynn Perez, Calsher Dear and Jack Dalton have been recalled to the Hawks' Round 16 side set to face the GWS GIANTS this Friday night at the MCG.

    Perez returns to the lineup for his sixth game this year after being a SSP recruit in March, while Dear and Dalton earn their first opportunity at AFL level since Round 11 and Round 8, respectively.

    Coming out of the side are Jarman Impey (injured), Josh Weddle (suspended) and first-year Hawk Cam Nairn (omitted).

    GREATER Western Sydney found some form last week as it prepares to face Melbourne in Alice Springs on Sunday.

    Melbourne (7-4) missed an opportunity to climb into the top four when it failed to make the most of its chances in the dying stages against the Western Bulldogs. 

    The Demons might have lost some of their momentum but will now be out to turn around their form at a home away from home where they have lost their past three matches, including unravelling in a nailbiter against the Giants in 2023.

    Steven King will have to do it without defensive duo Jake Lever (injured) and Changkuoth Jiath (managed), while Max Gawn will once again have to shoulder the great majority of the ruckwork with Max Heath omitted.

    Talented Trio Return

    The GIANTS have added three key players to their side for Sunday’s clash with the Demons.

    Star defender Sam Taylor will play his first game of the season on Sunday as one of three huge inclusions for the GIANTS’ clash with the Demons in Alice Springs.  

    Yet to feature in 2026 after suffering a high-grade hamstring injury in February’s State of Origin clash, the dual All Australian has completed a lengthy rehab process and has now been deemed fit and ready to return to Adam Kingsley’s side.  

    Also entering the team to take on the Demons is fellow All Australian Lachie Whitfield and exciting utility Leek Aleer.

    GREATER Western Sydney chair Tim Reed says the Giants are aiming to defy gravity like perennial challengers Geelong, saying he is certain his club will become a "powerhouse".

    The Giants have had a mixed start to this season, with a 3-5 record coming after a spate of injuries to key players.

    This season already shapes as a year of change, with chief executive Dave Matthews announcing last month that 2026 would be his last at the helm.

    In a rare interview, Reed, who took over as the club's second-ever president ahead of the 2024 season, told AFL.com.au the Giants are past their "start-up" beginnings and after playing finals in eight of the past 10 years, are aiming to move into their next evolution in their 15th year in the competition.

    ‘No one says that’: Fresh calls for team name-change… and new title ‘all the money’ points to

    Greater Western Sydney chair Tim Reed says his club is open to a rebrand “in time” as he declared: “100 per cent, we will be a powerhouse club.”

    The club, which entered the AFL competition in 2012, has previously flirted previously with ditching the GWS acronym and using the “Giants” as the club’s sole official name.

    GREATER Western Sydney is set to forgo established ruck Kieren Briggs for Academy product Nick Madden for a second week after the 21-year-old impressed coach Adam Kingsley in round five.

    Kingsley acknowledged that while it is rare for a 21-year-old to hold his own in the ruck, he's backing youth and "extreme drive" over experience in Friday's Derby against Sydney.

    “Nick is highly competitive, extremely driven, professional, and prepares extremely well, and he's a big guy. So, put them all together, and he’s probably ahead of most 21-year-old rucks,” Kingsley said on Thursday.

    Adam Kingsley isn't in panic mode over GWS's injury list but wasn't expecting to lose Aaron Cadman for the season starter

    RISING Greater Western Sydney forward Aaron Cadman is managing a "tricky" pelvis issue and won't be pushed to return ahead of time, despite the club's star-studded injury list.

    Cadman didn't play in the official practice match against Sydney, and then trained a few days later, whereupon the injury flared again. On Tuesday, he was listed as being out for two weeks with a pelvic problem.

    The Giants' injury list is littered with first-choice players, including Toby Bedford (hamstring), Leek Aleer (groin), Brent Daniels (hamstring), Sam Taylor (hamstring), Darcy Jones (knee), Josh Kelly (hip) and Tom Green (ACL).
