Game on: Giants lean into Madden football for Grundy battle

GWS will opt for Nick Madden in the ruck for a second week, forgoing established tall Kieren Briggs

GREATER Western Sydney is set to forgo established ruck Kieren Briggs for Academy product Nick Madden for a second week after the 21-year-old impressed coach Adam Kingsley in round five.

Kingsley acknowledged that while it is rare for a 21-year-old to hold his own in the ruck, he's backing youth and "extreme drive" over experience in Friday's Derby against Sydney.

“Nick is highly competitive, extremely driven, professional, and prepares extremely well, and he's a big guy. So, put them all together, and he’s probably ahead of most 21-year-old rucks,” Kingsley said on Thursday.

Who has GWS coach Adam Kingsley picked to take on Sydney's All-Australian ruckman Brodie Grundy in a high-stakes derby?

Kingsley concedes he's made an unusual decision to hand Madden the job for Friday night's clash at the SCG, but the Giants coach is being guided by "great faith".

Madden will test his mettle against one of the competition's top rucks in just his fifth AFL game, as Kingsley makes three changes.

Live: Giants, Hawks clash in Sydney before premiers open campaign in Brisbane

An injury-hit GWS sides open their season against Hawthorn in Sydney, before the Brisbane Lions unfurl their premiership flag against the Bulldogs.

The Giants have had a nightmare preseason with injuries and they will take on the Hawks without star players Tom Green, Josh Kelly, Sam Taylor and Aaron Cadman.

Last year's preliminary finalists Hawthorn will start favourites, but they will also be missing key personnel including Will Day and Cam McKenzie.

Later, the Lions will begin their tilt at a third-straight premiership at the Gabba when they take on Western Bulldogs under lights on Saturday night.

The spotlight will be on Lachie Neale, who gave up the Brisbane co-captaincy earlier this year amid his marriage breakdown.

Toby Greene has begun in the midfield for the Giants, with Jake Stringer botching a tough set shot for goal to register the first score of the game. The Hawks would have been buoyed by the strong mark taken by Mitch Lewis in response.

However, a 50m penalty against Massimo D’Ambrosio for being in the protected zone has gifted Jake Riccardi a goal from about 25 metres.

The weather is a big watch in Sydney, with dark skies now hovering. Rain and possible lightning have been forecast. We’ll see.

Key forward's 'tricky' injury adds to Giants' woes ahead of Hawks clash

Adam Kingsley isn't in panic mode over GWS's injury list but wasn't expecting to lose Aaron Cadman for the season starter

RISING Greater Western Sydney forward Aaron Cadman is managing a "tricky" pelvis issue and won't be pushed to return ahead of time, despite the club's star-studded injury list.

Cadman didn't play in the official practice match against Sydney, and then trained a few days later, whereupon the injury flared again. On Tuesday, he was listed as being out for two weeks with a pelvic problem.

The Giants' injury list is littered with first-choice players, including Toby Bedford (hamstring), Leek Aleer (groin), Brent Daniels (hamstring), Sam Taylor (hamstring), Darcy Jones (knee), Josh Kelly (hip) and Tom Green (ACL).

Giants vs. Patriots: Three must-know storylines for Monday's Week 13 prime-time game

At first glance, Monday night's opponents are eons apart when it comes to contending for a championship.

The Patriots are the AFC's top seed, with a three-game lead in the win column over the Bills in the AFC East and an inside track for a first-round bye. The Giants entered Week 13 as the only club eliminated from the playoffs, having already fired their head coach and defensive coordinator.

However, closer inspection at the teams' similarities suggests New England has the blueprint the Giants could follow for a rapid turnaround.

The Pats finished with four wins just a season ago, which led to the firing of head coach Jerod Mayo. But they nailed their hire of Mike Vrabel, and all the potential quarterback Drake Maye showed as a franchise cornerstone during his rookie season came to fruition after New England surrounded with him more talent in free agency and the draft.

Adam Schefter joins Pat McAfee to give the details of the Giants' firing of Brian Daboll. (2:35)

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The New York Giants fired coach Brian Daboll on Monday after the team blew another double-digit lead Sunday in Chicago.

It was the second time this season the Giants lost after leading by at least 10 points with under four minutes remaining. They became just the second team since the NFL merger to do that, joining the 2004 Seattle Seahawks.

"The past few seasons have been nothing short of disappointing, and we have not met our expectations for this franchise," Giants co-owner John Mara and Steve Tisch said Monday in a joint statement. "We understand the frustrations of our fans, and we will work to deliver a significantly improved product."

Brian Daboll’s run with the New York Giants came to an end on Monday as the team allowed another fourth-quarter comeback to doom them, resulting in their eighth loss of the season.

Multiple reports indicated that the team and Daboll parted ways, which is an abnormal move for an organization that usually likes to wait until the end of the season to decide on coaching changes. He’s the second head coach to be fired by the Giants in the middle of the year since Tom Coughlin left the franchise. The team fired Bob McAdoo before the 2017 season was over.

Mike Kafka will be the Giants’ interim head coach

The Giants fired head coach Brian Daboll on Monday and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka will take the reins for the remainder of the regular season.

Multiple reports say that Kafka will be named the interim head coach for the 2-8 club. It will be his first time in a head coaching role.

Kafka played quarterback at Northwestern and appeared in four games for the Eagles during the 2011 season. He remained active as a player through 2015 and joined Andy Reid’s staff in Kansas City in 2017. He spent four seasons as the Chiefs’ quarterbacks coach before joining Daboll’s staff in 2022.
