Trump judges give Trump officials a “Hail Mary pass” to avoid contempt inquiry

A dissenting Biden-appointed judge critiqued the majority for “cutting factfinding at the knees” and more.

Facing a criminal contempt probe, President Donald Trump’s administration has been seeking legal shelter. Trump-appointed appellate judges have been providing it.

The latest example came Tuesday, when a divided three-judge panel granted what it admitted was the government’s “extraordinary” request for relief, to terminate contempt proceedings stemming from last year’s deportation flights to a Salvadoran terror prison.

According to D.C. Circuit Judge Neomi Rao’s majority opinion, it’s not Trump officials who might be faulted for possibly ignoring U.S. District Judge James Boasberg’s orders in their quest to hurry migrants to El Salvador under the president’s legally dubious invocation of the 18th-century Alien Enemies Act. Rather, per Rao and fellow Trump appointee Justin Walker, it’s Boasberg’s attempt to understand what happened that risks upending the constitutional order.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal judge must end his “intrusive” contempt investigation of the Trump administration for failing to comply with an order over flights carrying Venezuelan migrants to El Salvador last year, a divided appeals court panel ruled Tuesday.

Chief Judge James Boasberg abused his discretion in forging ahead with criminal contempt proceedings stemming from the March 2025 deportation flights, according to the majority opinion by a three-judge panel from U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

For five years, she has volunteered on Good Friday to collect funds for the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne.

"I collect every year because of my granddaughter," Ms Risbey said.

"She had her first heart operation at the Royal Children's Hospital when she was one day old and she's had several since – now she's 18.

"I'm happy to collect what I can every year to help the hospital help other children."

On Friday April 3, 2026, Ms Risbey was joined by her friend River Chen at the Fairy Street and Raglan Parade intersection.

Border residents have dug deep for the Royal Children's Hospital Good Friday Appeal as dozens of volunteers took to the streets for a great cause.

More than $300,000 had been donated across the wider region, including Albury-Wodonga and surrounding towns, Wangaratta, Yarrawonga-Mulwala, Corowa, and in other Border areas.

The tally, as of 2pm on Friday, April 3, showed Wangaratta leading the donations with $92,833, ranking second across the state for regional locations.

Donors in Albury-Wodonga had given almost $70,000, Corowa-Wahgunyah generated more $28,027, and almost $20,000 was raised at Yarrawonga-Mulwala.

Real Madrid coach Alvaro Arbeloa and his star striker Kylian Mbappe agree on at least one thing, ahead of Sunday's visit to face Valencia in LaLiga – the need for consistency.

Two penalties give Girona bragging rights over Espanyol in fierce Catalan derby

BARCELONA, Spain(AP) — Vladyslav Vanat scored penalties in stoppage time of each half as Girona beat Espanyol 2-0 in a fiercely contested Catalan derby in La Liga on Friday.

It was the first time Girona has won three on the trot since November 2024.

The result lifted it into ninth place in the table. Espanyol remained fifth.

Girona had the better of the first half and went ahead on the stroke of halftime when Omar El Hilali was adjudged to have pulled Hugo Rincón in the box.

Espanyol goalkeeper Marko Dmitrović saved Vanat’s initial effort but the referee said he moved from his line before the kick and ordered a retake. Vanat made no mistake a second time, firing a perfect effort to the keeper’s right.

LaLiga returns to free-to-air TV in Spain with RTVE

RTVE has struck a deal with rightsholder DAZN to showcase its mandatory free-to-air match each week on Teledeporte.

Spanish soccer’s elite LaLiga will return to free-to-air television in the country after public-service broadcaster RTVE agreed a sub-licensing deal with rightsholder DAZN.

RTVE will air a single fixture each gameweek live on its Teledeporte terrestrial channel for the remainder of the 2025-26 campaign, starting with tonight’s (January 16) matchup between Espanyol and Girona.

Volunteer fire fighters from Rockingham and Wanneroo Bush Fire Brigades were patrolling and mopping up areas around Boddington after destructive bushfires swept through earlier this week.

Coming across a burnt out tree, the fire fighters were shocked to find two young joeys hiding underneath.

“It’s moments like this that quietly stay with you long after the fire is out,” the Department of Fire and Emergency Services WA said.

The volunteers gave the young kangaroos water from a bottle before they were given a quick check over by the crew for any burns.

According to DFES, crews from the Wanneroo and Rockingham volunteer fire brigades found the joeys crouched underneath the fallen tree while patrolling the fire at Boddington which burnt 4149ha of bushland earlier this week.

The video shows a firefighter approaching the joeys and offering them a drink of water from a bottle, which the thirsty joeys were all too happy to accept.

“After a drink of water and a quick check, the roos safely hopped on their way,” the caption said.
