Inside golf’s obsession with ‘fifth major’… and $35m Aussie answer to ‘money-driven agenda’

How The Players Championship fits into golf’s calendar sparks an annual debate, and now the players themselves have had their say.

The talk about this week’s tournament at TPC Sawgrass being the men’s game’s ‘fifth major’ went into overdrive last month.

Former professional turned commentator Brandel Chamblee raised eyebrows by sharing his belief during the Waste Management Phoenix Open that The Players is not only a major, but “the best major”.

The Players Championship: Matt Fitzpatrick on why winning at Sawgrass would be 'up there'

Fitzpatrick has had two top-10 finishes and three missed cuts in his past five appearances at the Players

The inference in the PGA Tour's tagline for this week's Players Championship at Sawgrass could not be clearer.

A concerted effort continues to be made by the tour to lean into the banner of golf's unofficial 'fifth major' and further amplify its flagship event.

The star-studded field – albeit missing ineligible LIV Golf players – and lucrative prize money underlines the prestige of a tournament set up in 1974 in an attempt by the American-based tour to create its own blue-riband event.

The iconic setting of a course where the jewel of the island 17th hole dazzles in its crown adds to the allure.

Cam Smith opens up on LIV Golf future after ‘weird scenario’ with PGA Tour

It was not that long ago Cam Smith possessed two of the five most important trophies in the game.

The Aussie first recognised on tour for his wispy mullet and moustache combo emerged as a world-beater in 2022 with wins at The Players at TPC Sawgrass and The Open at St Andrews.

When he soon jumped ship for LIV Golf, Smith was ranked the second best player in the world.

Golf, of course, is a fickle pursuit. Nobody at that stage could have been absolutely sure whether Smith was on an unstoppable path towards multiple major victories. Or, indeed, if he was riding a wave with a smelting-hot putter that would have given 2015 Jordan Spieth a run for his money.

Cam Smith is uncertain if the spotlight will shift from him to young Australian Elvis Smylie at LIV Golf's Adelaide tournament.

"Maybe. Perhaps," Smith said ahead of Thursday's opening round at the Grange in Adelaide.

"I still feel like there's a lot of pressure on myself and the team to perform well this week.

"It's our biggest week of the year. To have the home crowd behind you, you don't want to let them down.

How Adelaide became a shining light for Saudi-backed golf

Fans celebrate at the Grange Golf Club following the 2025 announcement that LIV Golf is set to remain in Adelaide until at least 2031. (ABC News)

For one last time, Grange Golf Club's "Watering Hole" is ready for a weekend of LIV Golf shenanigans.

The tee box of the par three is now surrounded by low-rise spectator stands, including the "BYD Shark Shack" (starting from $1,000) and the "Beach Club", which offers a shaded lounge, all-inclusive bar and "all-day chef-curated dining".

It's from these hospitality tents that well-hydrated punters showered American golfer Patrick Reed with beer last year after he landed an improbable hole-in-one.

Even if LIV Golf spends hundreds of millions of dollars to re-sign two-time U.S. Open winner Bryson DeChambeau, PGA Tour star Rory McIlroy said he doesn't believe the Saudi Arabian-financed breakaway league will be any better off.

"It's not as if they made any huge signings this year, is it?" McIlroy told The Telegraph of London on Thursday. "They haven't signed anyone who moves the needle, and I don't think they will. I mean, they could re-sign Bryson for hundreds of millions of dollars, but even if they do, it doesn't change their product, does it? They'll just be paying for the exact same thing."

‘Haven’t signed anyone’: Rory’s brutal LIV sledge as star twists knife in $750m reality check

Golf champion Rory McIlroy has delivered a blunt verdict on the LIV Golf threat, suggesting the rebel league is at a low point in its four-year existence following the departure of former world No. 1 Brooks Koepka.

Earlier this month, five-time major winner Koepka quit the Saudi-backed league with a year remaining on his contract, returning to the PGA Tour with a AU$7.4 million fine and minor playing restrictions, while he’s banned from earning any equity in the Tour for five years.

Rory McIlroy has taken a swipe at LIV Golf with the world No.2 questioning their recent signings when discussing the PGA Tour competitor's current state of affairs.

"It's not as if they made any ‍huge signings this year, is it?" McIlroy told The Telegraph of London.

"They haven't signed anyone who moves the needle, and I don't think they will. I mean, they could re-sign Bryson (DeChambeau) for hundreds of millions of dollars, but even if they do, it doesn't change their product, does it? They'll just be paying for the exact same thing."

From nine visits to the crease, Weatherald has managed 167 runs at 20.87.

Hardly the numbers to demand another Test and a decent enough sample size for selectors.

He’s struggled with balls on his stumps and I don’t think his balance has been where it needs to be throughout the series.

Head has certainly taken the pressure off Weatherald at the other end, but that 21 is his best Test return since the Gabba Test a month ago.
