    Gout Gout defended his national underage title with a scintillating run the in under-20s 100-metre final of the Australian Junior Championships at the Queensland Sports and Athletics Centre in Brisbane.

    The 18-year-old clocked a time of 10.21 seconds with a legal wind of +0.5 metres per second and even waved to the crowd once he hit the front with 20 metres to go.

    As well as becoming a national junior champion once again, Gout was also hoping to join Lachlan Kennedy (9.96sec) and Patrick Johnson (9.93sec) in Australia’s elite sub-10 second club.

    The Ipswich sprint sensation clocked 10.21 (+0.5mps) in the final to become the under-20s 100m champion at the Australian Junior Championships at QSAC.

    The 18-year-old phenom’s coronation as under-20s king was inevitable but the mountain he really wanted to conquer – breaking into the elite sub-10 club – proved a bridge too far on Saturday.

    Gout to lead main event on final day of Australian Athletics Championships

    A finals frenzy featuring Gout Gout awaits on the fourth and final day of the 2026 Australian Athletics Championships, where global medallists Nicola Olyslagers, Kurtis Marschall and Eleanor Patterson will send off the Chemist Warehouse Summer Series in style. 

    Another chapter will be written in the growing career of Gout (QLD, Diane Sheppard) who prepares to defend his national title after delivering the performance of the championships in 2025 as the Betty Cuthbert Medallist.

    On that occasion, Gout clocked 19.84 (+2.2) to ignite the crowd, now meeting Aidan Murphy (SA, Nik Hagicostas) who looms as the main challenger after a breakthrough season has seen him set personal bests from 100m through to the 400m. Lachlan Kennedy (QLD, Andrew Iselin) will not return after winning the 100m in a championship record of 9.96-secoonds.

    On one of the most dramatic nights in the recent history of Australian athletics, it said plenty about the sport’s growing strength that one of its highest profile stars wasn’t even at the track on Friday night.

    Teenage sprint sensation Gout Gout was resting up, ahead of his Australian national championship campaign getting underway on Sunday in the 200m. Gout is set to renew his rivalry with Lachie Kennedy in the half-lap sprint and record times could be in the offing.

    But while his face may be on the posters, Gout’s appearance in Sydney is far from the only highlight of a national titles full of world-class talent across distances and disciplines. And with a splash of soap opera and controversy thrown in for good measure.

    As Hull chases elusive gold, Hollingsworth is looming over her shoulder

    Jess Hull, Nina Kennedy, Nicola Olyslagers, Gout Gout and Lachlan Kennedy are among the big names competing at this week's Australian Athletics Championships at Sydney Olympic Park.

    Hull will have a packed program, competing in her pet event the 1,500 metres, alongside the 800m and 5,000m.

    Performances at the Nationals will help inform selection for July's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

    Jess Hull is in the midst of a career-best run, and it is only making her hungrier for more. 

    The Olympic silver medallist has already well and truly cemented herself amongst the very best 1,500-metre runners in the world, but wants to find out if she can also go the distance on either side of that.
