    Australian government arguing 'very forcefully' against Trump's new 12.5pc tariffs

    Five months after a court struck down many of Donald Trump's tariffs, the US has announced a suite of new imposts for all of its major trading partners.

    Australia has been hit with a 12.5 per cent tariff, while some countries have a 10 per cent tariff.

    The new tariffs came into force at 2:01pm AEST on Friday. A temporary 10 per cent tariff lapsed at the same time, so Australia's tariff rate increased 2.5 percentage points.

    The Trump administration has placed a 12.5 per cent tariff on Australian exports to the US.

    US imposes tariffs on dozens of trade partners over 'forced labour' imports

    The US has imposed new tariffs on 60 trading partners, accounting for the vast majority of its imports, over claims they failed to properly stop forced labour.

    The duties, ranging from 10% to 12.5%, target key economic partners – including the UK, China, the European Union, Canada, Japan and India. They came into effect on Friday, as a temporary 10% tax on foreign goods introduced earlier this year expired.

    The move is the latest escalation in the global trade war reignited by US President Donald Trump when he returned to office last year.

    The US Supreme Court ruled earlier this year that many of the tariffs imposed globally under emergency powers were illegally enacted.

    Zohran Mamdani, the New York City mayor, acknowledged on Tuesday he does not have the authority to arrest Benjamin Netanyahu, but urged US federal authorities to do so if the Israeli prime minister visits the US later this year.

    “Benjamin Netanyahu is a war criminal, the architect of a horrific genocide against the Palestinian people,” Mamdani said in a video posted to social media.

    Mamdani said he believed the international criminal court warrant for Netanyahu’s arrest over alleged war crimes was justified, but admitted he lacked the legal authority to enforce it.

    New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani has admitted that city authorities do not have the power to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should he visit the city.

    Netanyahu, who has been charged with war crimes by the International Criminal Court, is expected to visit New York in September for the United Nations general assembly.

    Mamdani earlier in the week said he was in “active” discussions with law enforcement, after having consistently labelled Netanyahu a war criminal over the Gaza invasion.

    In a video posted to social media today, Mamdani acknowledged that it would be impossible to carry out an arrest in the name of the ICC.

    Government urged to 'bite the bullet' and mandate mobile phone roaming

    Communications consumer group ACCAN has released a report calling for domestic roaming to be mandated in Australia.

    It argues that roaming has helped drive down prices in other countries and that it would help provide better mobile access, particularly for regional Australians.

    The competition regulator acknowledged there had been several technical and regulatory changes since it last looked at the issue in 2017, and that it was monitoring market conditions.

    Calls are growing for domestic roaming to be mandated in Australia, with advocates claiming it would help give mobile users better access and more competitive prices.

    NSW Police are investigating whether cannibalism was involved in the death of a four-year-old boy on the Central Coast.

    The 32-year-old mother of the child was charged with domestic violence murder and refused bail.

    Police sources have confirmed to the ABC that cannibalism will form part of an investigation into the death of a four-year-old boy on the New South Wales Central Coast.

    The mother of the boy walked into the Wyong Police Station about 4:40pm on Saturday, triggering a welfare check.

    Kate Washington, the NSW minister for communities and family, announced the independent review into the child’s case on Monday afternoon, two days after police found the preschooler’s body at a home on the Central Coast.

    Multiple child safety reports before child’s alleged murder by mother

    Authorities received multiple child safety reports before a four-year-old boy was found allegedly murdered by his mother on the NSW Central Coast, as the minister orders a review to examine if the agency responsible could have done more to protect the child.

    Families and Communities Minister Kate Washington said reports that the mother was using drugs and had mental health problems would fall under the scope of the review, which will be conducted by retired judge and former president of the NSW Children’s Court Peter Johnstone.

    When asked if it was appropriate that the mother retained custody of the boy despite multiple child safety reports, the minister said there were “many complexities” in the case, and the review would aim to answer those questions. The review will also examine if decisions made by the department were adequate, looking at all previous interactions with authorities.

    Government to extend pay subsidy to avoid childcare worker walk off

    Childcare workers will no longer walk off the job in July because the federal government has agreed to fund a 15 per cent pay rise for an additional 18 months. 

    The scheme, which affects the wages of 200,000 early educators, would have ran out in November. 

    A Fair Work Commission decision on gender-based undervaluation means childcare workers will get a permanent pay rise funded by employers in 2029. 

    Childcare workers have scrapped a plan to walk off the job in July after the federal government agreed to fund a 15 per cent pay rise for another 18 months at a cost of $3.6 billion.

    $3.6 billion childcare pay deal staves off pay cuts, fee hikes and a strike

    Tens of thousands of childcare workers will avoid pay cuts after the Albanese government agreed to double its $3.6 billion election pledge to prop up early educator salaries, due to expire this year.

    Funding for the two-year deal to give early educators a 15 per cent pay rise, announced ahead of the 2025 election, was to expire in December. Sixty-thousand workers were facing pay cuts of 5 to 6 per cent, according to the United Workers Union, which was threatening to strike next month if the subsidy wasn’t extended.

    A cap on how much providers could hike fees was also due to end in August, leading to calls from advocates for a new deal to prevent further price rises for families.

    Taxpayers to foot bill for another $3.6b childcare wage subsidy

    Taxpayers will fund another $3.6 billion in childcare wage subsidies over the next 18 months, after a supposedly one-off injection of the same amount over the past two years backfired, leaving workers exposed to a pay cut unless it was renewed.

    The new funding, which will take to $7.2 billion the gross amount spent on childcare wage subsidies in less than four years, will be unveiled by the Albanese government on Wednesday, along with a signature announcement on Medicare, at the same time the ascendant Pauline Hanson makes her first keynote address to the National Press Club.

    If it's serious about improving intergenerational fairness and housing affordability in this week's budget, perhaps the government should just build some houses.

    That's about as likely as my last bright idea of nationalising child care, but back when housing was affordable, public housing was an important part of the mix.

    Whitlam tried to restart it after Menzies slashed it, but the states resisted, and since then, federal governments have exited public housing.

    The Housing Australia Future Fund's support for community housing is a good policy, but it is too limited.

    Speaking to 4CA radio Cairns, Albanese says the Liberals and Nationals “don’t really stand for anything any more”.

    Chalmers’ budget tax cuts on one-year delay

    Australians will not receive a bonus tax cut this year to compensate for tax hikes on asset owners as the Albanese government aims to rein in ballooning debt and avoid stimulus that might fuel inflation and interest rates.

    This masthead has confirmed through cabinet sources that a potential one-off tax offset for wage earners is expected to be handed to voters at tax time in 2027, rather than this financial year.

    Resisting the temptation to woo voters with a tax offset during a petrol price shock, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Treasurer Jim Chalmers have made a call to stick this year with the modest “top-up” tax cuts announced in last year’s budget – worth about $5 a week to people earning more than $45,000 a year – and due to kick in from July.

    The French government agency that handles the issuing and management of citizens’ identity documents, including national IDs, passports, and immigration documents, confirmed Wednesday that it experienced a data breach.

    In an announcement, the Agence Nationale des Titres Sécurisés (ANTS) said the data stolen in the breach could include full names, dates and places of birth, mailing and email addresses, and phone numbers on an undisclosed number of citizens. ANTS said the investigation to determine how the breach happened and its impact is ongoing, and people whose data was affected are being notified. 

    ANTS France data leak: up to 12 million people affected

    The personal data of around 12 million people in France may have been compromised during a recent security breach of the ANTS website, the Interior Ministry has said. 

    ANTS is used for many document requests and processes in France, including driving licences, passports, as well as ID and residency cards. 

    The ministry announced earlier this week that a security breach had been identified at the official document agency (Agence nationale des titres sécurisés, known as ANTS or France Titres). 

    In an update on Tuesday evening, it confirmed that data of around 12 million accounts may have been taken. Investigations into the matter are still ongoing.
