    The French government agency that handles the issuing and management of citizens’ identity documents, including national IDs, passports, and immigration documents, confirmed Wednesday that it experienced a data breach.

    In an announcement, the Agence Nationale des Titres Sécurisés (ANTS) said the data stolen in the breach could include full names, dates and places of birth, mailing and email addresses, and phone numbers on an undisclosed number of citizens. ANTS said the investigation to determine how the breach happened and its impact is ongoing, and people whose data was affected are being notified. 

    ANTS France data leak: up to 12 million people affected

    The personal data of around 12 million people in France may have been compromised during a recent security breach of the ANTS website, the Interior Ministry has said. 

    ANTS is used for many document requests and processes in France, including driving licences, passports, as well as ID and residency cards. 

    The ministry announced earlier this week that a security breach had been identified at the official document agency (Agence nationale des titres sécurisés, known as ANTS or France Titres). 

    In an update on Tuesday evening, it confirmed that data of around 12 million accounts may have been taken. Investigations into the matter are still ongoing.

    Shadow Treasurer Tim Wilson has warned the federal government’s spending is worsening inflation and increasing the risk of an economic downturn.

    The government has halved the fuel excise, reducing the cost of petrol and diesel by 26.3 cents a litre for three months.

    The heavy road user charge will also be reduced to zero for the same period, taking pressure off truck drivers and transport costs.

    State and territory leaders agreed in a national cabinet meeting on a four-point fuel supply action plan.

    The government has halved the fuel excise on petrol and diesel for three months, reducing the cost of fuel by 26.3 cents a litre.

    Economists will say that what millions of motorists gain in cheaper fuel through the prime minister’s three-month fuel excise cut, they will lose in more expensive mortgages.

    Chris Bowen has insisted the country’s fuel supply is yet to be affected by the war in the Middle East while criticising a rush to buy jerry cans to fill up with petrol as “un-Australian”.

    The energy minister made the comments after an emergency meeting with major fuel suppliers and retailers that was convened by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) to demand explanations for the recent surge in petrol prices.

    The UK government has updated its guidance for British and Irish dual nationals. 

    Travellers who hold both an expired UK passport as well as a valid passport from a country that's eligible for an Electronic Travel Authorisation may now be able to enter the UK. 

    The new rules will come into effect from Wednesday and are at the discretion of airlines and other carriers. 

    British and Irish dual nationals may be able to use their expired British passports, along with a valid second passport, to enter the United Kingdom under new temporary measures — but only at the discretion of airlines and other carriers.

    Qantas to accept dual citizens’ expired UK passports

    Qantas said it will temporarily accept expired British passports from dual Anglo-Australian citizens boarding flights for the UK, when that country’s new visa rules come into effect on Wednesday.

    The Australian flagship carrier said it would follow advice from the UK government and accept expired passports – from 1989 or later – from dual citizens if they don’t have the current British passport required under the rule change for dual citizens to use for entry to Britain and Ireland.

    Effective on February 25, Australian citizens – who are also British or Irish dual nationals by descent – can no longer travel to the UK without a current British or Irish passport.

    Services Australia has known it was not fully complying with child support laws for six years, according to a scathing report released by the Commonwealth Ombudsman. 

    Legislative amendments introduced in 2008 and 2018 created "unintended consequences" in which some parents with less than 35 per cent care of a child were technically eligible for child support, despite a longstanding government policy that this is not the case. 

    A government spokesperson said legislation to rectify the "technical legal anomaly" would be introduced when parliament next sits in February.

    Services Australia knew its internal practices relating to child support payments conflict with the law but did nothing about it for six years, a report from the commonwealth ombudsman has found.

    In 2019, the agency identified that its child support practice that stipulated that parents with less than 35% care of a child do not receive financial support was not aligned with the law.

    Legally, one parent providing less than 35% care of a child is entitled to receive some support from the other parent, but Services Australia said it has a “longstanding principle” that parents with less than 35% care of a child should not be eligible for child support as applying the law could result in situations where a parent with “little, or even no care, of children” receives payment from the main carer.

    A government department has been caught out deliberately breaking the law because of a bizarre loophole which could force separated parents to unfairly pay child support.

    An ombudsman's report into Services Australia and the Department of Social Services found the agencies were "knowingly non-compliant" with child support legislation.

    Commonwealth Ombudsman Iain Anderson said the scenario was similar to the Robodebt scandal, because it also involved a government department ignoring the law – albeit for a different reason.

    Federal Energy Minister Chris Bowen has announced big changes to the government's battery subsidy scheme amid claims most of its $2.3 billion budget has been spent in just six months.

    The minister unveiled the $5 billion shake-up today while addressing the solar and battery industries, which are increasingly worried about the risks of a boom-bust cycle fuelled by the scheme.

    Under the program, announced in the run-up to the election in April and which came into effect in July, households and small businesses can claim rebates on the upfront cost of batteries.

    Discounts for larger systems will be wound back under a popular home battery scheme as the program’s budget is tripled.

    The federal subsidy, which has been in place for five months, will get a generous top-up to $7.2bn across four years after initially being earmarked to cost $2.3bn, the energy minister, Chris Bowen, said.

    The fund was thought to be running out rapidly, in part because households were installing systems up to the maximum subsidised size to take full advantage of the one-time offer.

    BUEA, Cameroon – Prime Minister Head of Government Joseph Dion Ngute, on Wednesday, November 26, presented the government's strategic roadmap for 2026 before members of the National Assembly, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to President Paul Biya’s recently outlined national vision. The session, chaired by House Speaker Cavaye Yeguie Djibril, highlighted major reforms and infrastructure projects expected to shape Cameroon’s political, social, and economic landscape next year.

    Cameroon plans CFA8.8 trn budget for 2026, with CFA3.1 trn to be borrowed

    (Business in Cameroon) – The government has submitted its 2026 finance bill to the National Assembly. The draft sets revenue and spending at CFA8,816.4 billion, an increase of a little over CFA1,000 billion from 2025 (+14%).

    The general budget totals CFA8,683.9 billion, up CFA1,014.9 billion (+13%). Special Appropriation Accounts (CAS) are projected at CFA132.5 billion, almost double the previous year’s level. The sharp rise is driven by a new Special Fund for Women’s Economic Empowerment and Youth Employment, financed with CFA50 billion, in line with commitments made by the Head of State.

    The draft points to a deficit of CFA631 billion. When other financing charges are included, total needs reach CFA3,104.2 billion. With internal revenue expected to reach CFA5,887 billion, the government plans to raise the remaining amount through various forms of borrowing.

    Cameroon’s 2026 budget deficit set to double on higher spending needs

    Cameroon expects its 2026 budget deficit to more than double due to a sharp rise in spending aimed at supporting economic activity amid continued global instability, according to a draft finance bill presented to Parliament late on Wednesday.

    Cameroon is highly exposed to external shocks, including price volatility, due to its heavy reliance on imports of fuel, wheat and automobiles.

    The overall deficit is projected to be 631 billion CFA francs ($1.11 billion), up from 309.9 billion CFA francs ($545 million) in 2025, raising the government’s total financing needs to 3 104.2 billion CFA francs ($5.46 billion) in 2026, compared with 2 326.5 billion CFA francs ($4.09 billion) this year.

    The government has proposed a 2026 state budget of 8,816.4 billion CFA francs ($15.50 billion), up 14% from 2025, driven by higher personnel costs, goods and services, transfers and debt payments.
