    Justin Fairfax, a former lieutenant governor of Virginia whose tenure was upended by allegations of sexual assault, shot and killed his wife Cerina Fairfax on Thursday before killing himself, police said.

    Kevin Davis, the chief of the Fairfax county police department in Virginia, said at a press conference that the murder-suicide took place in the context of “an ongoing domestic dispute surrounding what seems to be a complicated or messy divorce”. The shooting took place at the Fairfaxes residence in Annandale, Virginia, and police arrived on the scene after receiving a 911 call from one of their teenage children shortly after midnight.

    Fairfax, who was a rising star in the Democratic party before his career was derailed by sexual assault allegations, fatally shot his wife before killing himself. The couple had been going through a divorce.

    NSW's first female governor Dame Marie Bashir dies aged 95

    NSW Premier Chris Minns has announced a state funeral for Dame Marie Bashir, the first female governor of the state.

    Dame Marie served in the role between 2001 and 2014, having previously worked as a clinical psychiatrist.

    Dame Marie Bashir, who became the first female governor of New South Wales and held the post for 14 years, has died, Premier Chris Minns has announced.

    In a statement released on Tuesday night, Mr Minns described her as "an extraordinary Australian and one of New South Wales’ most respected public servants".

    He announced a state funeral would be held for the "deeply loved mother of three children and six grandchildren".

    Dame Marie has died aged 95, NSW Premier Chris Minns confirmed on Tuesday, after a career in medicine and politics that led her to meet presidents, popes and princesses.
