Ariana Grande & Ben Stiller Were Co-Stars 10 Years Before Focker-in-Law, But Everyone Forgot

Wicked star and award-winning music artist Ariana Grande is about to join a decades-old, beloved franchise with Focker-in-Law, the latest installment in the Meet the Parents franchise, which began in 2000. The movie is set to hit theaters on November 25 and will see Grande's character, Olivia, engaged to Henry, the son of Ben Stiller's fan-favorite character Greg/Gaylord Focker. The plot seems to see history repeating itself, with Greg developing an adversarial relationship with his potential future daughter-in-law, just as he once had with his own father-in-law, Jack (Robert De Niro).

The news that Grande would be starring in the movie led to plenty of surprise and even some backlash, as many felt that Grande wasn't a fit for such a movie, despite her history of movie successes. Those include, as mentioned, her recent hit Wicked and its sequel movie Wicked: For Good, both of which were celebrated smash hits and the former of which managed to snag two Oscar wins from an impressive 10 total nominations. In part, this sentiment against Grande's Focker-in-Law role seems to come from the much stronger association of Grande with her very successful music career.

It's easy to forget that Ariana Grande started her career primarily with acting because she went on to become such a major singer and music artist, but throughout her teen years, she was cast in a number of significant TV roles, particularly TV shows geared towards other teens. Her breakout role was undoubtedly as Cat Valentine in Victorious, which ran from 2010 to 2013, although she had acted in a variety of smaller roles before that. She then reprised the role in a show she co-starred in with Jennette McCurdy, Sam & Cat, which ran for just one year.

From there, Grande pivoted sharply into primarily singing. Her album Yours Truly came out in 2013—the same year Victorious wrapped and Sam & Cat began—and My Everything was very close behind in 2014. Dangerous Woman, one of her biggest albums to date, came out in 2016. Currently, she has seven studio albums, although an eighth, titled Petal, will be released later this month, on July 31. It's therefore understandable that audiences have come to associate her with music, even though she never fully stepped away from acting.

Benicio Del Toro Joins Ben Stiller in Apple TV Comedy ‘Protective Custody’

Benicio Del Toro is set for a lead role opposite Ben Stiller in the upcoming Apple TV comedy series “Protective Custody,” Variety has learned.

The show was originally announced in May with Stiller attached to star and executive produce. It marks the first lead series comedy role of Del Toro’s career as well as a reunion for him and Stiller. The two previously collaborated on the Showtime limited series “Escape at Dannemora,” which Stiller directed and in which Del Toro starred. Both received Emmy nominations for their work on the show.

The logline for “Protective Custody” states that the show “will follow a disgraced financier (Stiller) accused of massive fraud who is thrown into protective custody, where he must navigate prison politics, salvage his reputation, and confront the consequences of his actions while awaiting trial.”
