Greenland issues ‘strong warning’ as Trump-linked oil firm prepares to drill

Island’s government says no approval given after Greenland Energy brings kit ashore for exploratory drilling

An American oil company connected to Donald Trump is preparing to sink wells in remote Greenland despite not having received permission from the local authorities.

As the US president renews his threats to claim the vast Arctic territory, materials to prepare for drilling were brought ashore in recent days on Greenland’s eastern coast.

That has prompted Greenland’s government to issue a “strong warning” that no approval had been granted to land the kit. “All future logistical matters must be advised and approved by the mineral resources authority – before they are carried out,” the government said in a statement.

Greenland warns Trump-linked oil firm over unauthorized drilling equipment

Greenland has issued a "strong warning" to an oil company linked to US President Donald Trump after drilling equipment was brought ashore without the required government approvals, according to British media.

The Telegraph reported Sunday that Greenland's Department of Industry and Minerals said machinery had been landed on the island's eastern coast last month for planned oil exploration drilling, but the company did not have the necessary permits.

"A strong warning will be sent" to the licensee, the department said.

The project is being funded by Greenland Energy, a Texas-based company established last year. The firm says as much as $1 trillion in crude could lie beneath the Jameson Land region and has taken a majority stake in the exploration project in return for financing.

Has Donald Trump's Invasion of Greenland Already Begun? Expert Outrage at Unauthorized Oil Drilling

A Texas-based energy firm with deep ties to US President Donald Trump has sparked international outrage by preparing for oil exploration on the remote shores of eastern Greenland. The planned project comes just days after the president renewed threats to seize the autonomous Arctic territory prompting speculation among critics about whether US efforts to expand influence in Greenland are already under way.

The news came after Greenland Energy delivered heavy extraction equipment to the ecologically fragile Jameson Land region without securing the required permits from local authorities. This prompted the Greenlandic government to issue a warning last week, demanding that all future corporate activities receive explicit approval before taking place.

Greenland’s strategic position in seven maps: Why Trump wants the island

The world’s largest island sits in the Arctic Circle and is strategically and economically valuable.

US President Donald Trump is in Davos, Switzerland, to attend the annual gathering of the World Economic Forum (WEF), where the issue of Greenland will be front and centre.

Trump’s long-running fixation on acquiring Greenland, an autonomous territory of NATO member Denmark, has escalated into a transatlantic imbroglio, with threats of sweeping new tariffs and even taking Greenland by military force rattling stock markets.

Speaking at a White House media briefing on Tuesday to mark one year since his second-term inauguration, he said Greenland was “imperative for national and world security”.

Danish PM Mette Frederiksen in Greenland for 'show of support'

Danish PM Mette Frederiksen is visiting Greenland's capital Nuuk for talks with the territory's leader, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, after a rollercoaster week that saw US President Donald Trump roll back his threats to forcibly take over the Arctic island and agree to further negotiations.

Tensions had risen precariously over the past couple of weeks, until a stunning turnaround on Wednesday, when Trump suddenly ruled out military action, and withdrew his threats to slap tariffs on several European allies.

Trump posted on social media that a "framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland" had been reached, following his meeting with Nato chief Mark Rutte at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

NATO chief’s Greenland deal with Trump blindsides European allies

European diplomats with knowledge of the framework tell MS NOW that NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte “negotiated this on his own” and that “the Danes are still stressed.”

DAVOS, Switzerland — A deal on Greenland that NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte negotiated with President Donald Trump blindsided European officials who had striven to show unity in the face of escalating threats from the U.S., a European diplomat with knowledge of ongoing discussions told MS NOW.

“Rutte negotiated this on his own,” the diplomat told MS NOW on Friday, referring to the agreement discussed by the NATO secretary general and President Donald Trump at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Global shares have fallen for a fourth day and some measures ‍of market stress remain high after a rout in global bonds and US threats to acquire Greenland kept investors on edge ahead of President Donald Trump's Davos speech.

Fears of foreign selling of US assets – the so-called "Sell America" trade that emerged after 2025's "Liberation Day" tariff announcements in April – gripped markets as Wall Street tumbled more than two per cent overnight and the US dollar suffered its biggest fall in over a month.
