The gas industry is mobilising in opposition to a potential new tax on the sector as political momentum builds – including among Labor MPs – for the government to use the May budget to prevent producers profiting from the Middle East war.

The Australian Energy Producers (AEP) chief executive, Samantha McCulloch, claimed a new tax would punish the same Asian trading partners Australia was leaning on to supply more fuel amid the global energy crisis.

Anthony Albanese's department has requested Treasury modelling on options to impose a new levy on gas companies, as well as further changes to the Petroleum Resources Rent Tax.

The document, seen by the ABC, suggests the government is seeking advice on whether to impose the tax in the May budget to collect some of the windfall profits gas companies are making during the Middle East war.

More than 500 million litres of petrol and diesel have been released from federal fuel reserves and directed to regional communities.

Heavy rain continues to batter north and central Queensland communities as ex-Tropical Cyclone Koji shifts inland.

The Isaac Regional Council has issued a flood warning for residents in the rural town of Clermont.

Heavy rainfall is extending south today, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

Authorities have issued a Flood Emergency Warning for the central Queensland town of Clermont as large parts of the state are on flood watch in the wake of ex-Tropical Cyclone Koji.

The Isaac Regional Council says the town is experiencing flooding and residents in low-lying areas should monitor conditions and be prepared to move to higher ground.

Communities are bracing for “life-threatening flash flooding” as the remnants of ex-cyclone Koji move westward across Queensland’s north, threatening regions still recovering from record rain in the new year.

Koji was declared a cyclone on Saturday evening, and had been expected to cross the coast as a category 2 storm.

In the early hours of Sunday it was downgraded to category 1, then weakened below tropical cyclone intensity as it crossed the coast between Ayr and Bowen about 10am.

Speaking in Mackay on Monday, Premier David Crisafulli said government disaster response efforts were dropping medicine and supplies to cattle in western Queensland regions, where almost 50,000 animals had been lost.
