The Origin Energy cyber hack has been traced to a former Accenture employee in the Philippines.
Authorities have traced the Origin Energy cyber hack that exposed the personal data of close to a million Australians to a Manila call centre.
Origin customers told the ABC they feared their personal data had been compromised and expressed frustration that the company had not provided sufficient details of the nature of the incident.
The investigation has linked a former Accenture employee in Manila, in the Philippines, to last month's security breach.
Origin hack investigation points to offshore Accenture employee
The investigation into a security breach at Origin Energy that resulted in the release of personal information of almost a million customers is focusing on a former Accenture employee working in Manila, where the electricity and gas giant had outsourced key billing and customer support functions.
The employee, who has now left the consulting firm, had intended to extort the company for money in exchange for the return of the information, multiple people briefed on the matter said on condition of anonymity.
This story has been updated to clarify that Accenture was sued by Marriott customers, not by Marriott in 2019.
