2026 Australian Football Hall of Fame Inductees

At tonight’s 2026 induction ceremony for the Australian Football Hall of Fame in Melbourne, Bill Walker, the only man in West Australian football history to have won four Sandover Medals was elevated to be the 34th Legend in the history of the game.

A further six new members were welcomed into the Hall of Fame with their careers spanning both the current national competition at AFL level and the histories of the state leagues.

The man behind the name: Gary Ablett jnr lived in the public eye and stayed private

Back in 2018, I sat down with a genial Gary Ablett, who by then had achieved so much on the field that it was no longer necessary to affix “junior” to the back of his name.

The interview, a couple of weeks before the 2018 season, was tied to the son’s return to Geelong after his seven years in Tibet – in exile from football’s main street, on the Gold Coast, where he had maintained his standing as the game’s most accomplished midfielder for four or five years, taking a second Brownlow and two further gongs as the players’ most valuable player.

How the ‘Baby Bomber’ who got thrown to the wolves became a hall-of-fame 400-gamer

Champion Essendon defender Dustin Fletcher started his AFL career off-script as he lined up to contest the centre bounce against Carlton beanpole and premiership ruckman Justin Madden in his first match.

Two hours later he was part of one of the game’s most memorable draws when a set shot from Carlton’s Stephen Kernahan to win the match after the siren went out on the full.

By the end of the season, Fletcher was Kernahan’s opponent in the grand final as “the Baby Bombers” stormed to an unlikely premiership with the 17-gamer playing full-back on the game’s best forward.

From prodigy to 400-game great, lifetime Bomber earns Hall of Fame spot

A 400-game great for the Bombers, Dustin Fletcher has earned a place in the Australian Football Hall of Fame

DUSTIN Fletcher grew up at the Essendon Football Club. His father, Ken, played 264 games for the club between 1967 and 1980.

So, to be entering the Australian Football Hall of Fame as a lifetime Essendon player, a 400-game player who still works for the club, is an incredible achievement.

"Yep, pretty special," he said. "Especially when you see some of the names on the list. I'm just rapt the AFL made that decision."

By his own admission, Fletcher's career can be divided into two parts.

West Australian Football Hall of Famer Michael Mitchell, alongside his two daughters Meghan and Sam, have designed Richmond’s 2026 Dreamtime guernsey.

The jumper will be worn in Friday’s night match against Essendon at the MCG.

The guernsey tells the story of Mitchell’s family and his time at the Claremont and Richmond Football Clubs.

Michael Mitchell helps Richmond uncover Dreamtime story ahead of Friday night clash

Richmond’s 2026 trip to Shark Bay brought the club face to face with Michael Mitchell, the former Tiger legend who designed its 2026 Dreamtime guernsey. The visit also gave Maurice Rioli Jr and several AFL and AFLW players a closer look at the people and stories behind the strip.

For Richmond, the trip was not just a photo stop. It tied the club to Mitchell’s family and to the history that shaped the jumper, with the visit uncovering the stories behind the 2026 Dreamtime guernsey in a way a launch could not.

Mitchell also joined a panel to discuss Dreamtime at the 'G and explain the thinking behind his 2026 design. Later, the former Tigers star appeared on the Talking Tigers podcast ahead of the round 11 clash with Essendon on Friday night, extending a week in which Richmond’s past and present were closely linked.

Hall of Fame Legend – Robert Walls

Roberts Walls sat in the Chanel Seven commentary box at the MCG to watch the Brisbane Lions beat Essendon in the 2001 AFL Grand Final to claim their first premiership.

He was his normal unbiased, straight-shooting, insightful self, making viewers feel like they were part of the action.

Except internally he wasn’t. He was barracking hard for the Lions. For ‘his boys’.

The Lions were on a 15-game winning streak but were underdogs against the defending premiers. On a stinking hot day they went to halftime 14 points down before a 6-2 to 1-2 third quarter turned the game completely. They won by 26 points.

Robert Walls Medal to debut in Round 9 Brisbane-Carlton clash

robert walls will be honoured in Round 9 when the best player on the ground in Brisbane’s clash with Carlton receives the Robert Walls Medal. It will be the second time the medal has been awarded, and it comes approaching the one-year anniversary of Walls’ passing on 15 May 2025.

The medal was created to perpetuate his memory across the two clubs where he made a major mark as a player, coach and media personality. Carlton and Brisbane are the links in this tribute, and the award puts the performance in this match ahead of any wider ceremony.

Walls first arrived at Carlton in the summer of 1966 after accepting an invitation to train at Princes Park on his pushbike. He went on to play 218 matches for Carlton through 12 seasons to 1978, led the club as captain and twice won its goalkicking honours.

DAYS's Deidre Hall Reacts to Ryan Gosling's Marlena Shout-out

During a recent episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, actor Ryan Gosling was promoting his new movie, Project Hail Mary, when he shared with host Josh Horowitz that he was a big fan of Days of Our Lives growing up. While Horowitz seemed skeptical — a bit dismissive, even — Gosling explained why he loved it, praising the actors for consistently delivering the large amount of material they are asked to perform in one take. The movie star specifically noted the iconic storyline when Deidre Hall’s Marlena was possessed by the devil, calling her a “great actress” for pulling it off. Now, Hall has personally responded to Gosling in a video message posted to Instagram.

Recently, one surprising A-lister admitted they were a big fan of soap operas, specifically Days of Our Lives.

Recently, one surprising A-lister admitted they were a big fan of soap operas, specifically Days of Our Lives. We're talking about Ryan Gosling.

Appearing on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Gosling confessed to watching the daytime soap opera all the time when he was growing up. He says that Days of Our Lives doesn't get the love that it deserves.

"They do not get the love they deserve," Gosling said. "The amount they have to memorize the night before. Like, 10 pages of dialogue. They get one take, and it's impossible scenarios, like when Marlena, Deidre Hall — we know Deidre Hall — gets possessed. This is right around when X Files was a big deal, right? Suddenly, everything got supernatural. She was possessed by the devil. So Deidre Hall has to suddenly, after playing just a normal person, then she's [not]."

Cub Swanson books UFC 327 banger after deciding against retirement

Retirement was an option, but Swanson (30-14 MMA, 15-10 UFC) has chosen against it. Instead, he'll return April 11 at UFC 327 in Miami when he battles Nate Landwehr (18-7 MMA, 5-5 UFC) in a three-round bout at Kaseya Center.

Two people with knowledge of the matchup recently informed MMA Junkie of the booking but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement. Swanson first announced the bout on social media.

Swanson, 42, most recently fought in December 2024 when he cracked Billy Quarantillo with a walkoff knockout right cross. Swanson had indicated the fight would be his final, but openly admitted to grappling with the decision in its immediate aftermath. A member of the UFC roster since the WEC merger in 2011, Swanson is 5-3 in his most recent eight outings.
