The Coalition has refused to support a motion censuring One Nation leader Pauline Hanson for suggesting there are no "good" Muslims, arguing such a sanction should not be routinely used for public commentary.

Two Liberal senators crossed the floor and voted with Labor and the Greens to pass the motion, including Paul Scarr, who was recently dumped from the opposition front bench.

One Nation is planning to contest the upcoming by-election in Farrer, after a series of opinion polls put the minor party ahead of the Coalition.

‘I just want to be free’: Australian children held in Syrian camp reveal their hopes and dreams

Guardian reporters have spent time on the ground at the al-Roj detention camp in Syria, speaking to multiple children stuck there.

Despite the opposition’s accusations, some of the children are as young as six years old, and have described their desperation to get out of the camp that most have spent their entire lives in after their parents travelled to Syria.

Pauline Hanson fails to declare interests including company tied to ‘anti-woke’ movie

One Nation leader Pauline Hanson has failed to declare director roles or shareholdings in three companies, including one tied to her upcoming satirical film, A Super Progressive Movie.

The companies are run or co-owned by party official Alexander Jones, who pleaded guilty to a $24,000 attempted electoral fraud in 2023. Two involve James Ashby, her chief of staff.

Senate rules require updates to business interests within 35 days but corporate records show Hanson has not declared one directorship for nearly five years.

The omissions are the latest in a series of transparency failures by the Queensland senator, who this month declared her intention to form government.

The Coalition Split and the Re-emergence of One Nation

Despite denials, I find it hard to believe that this week’s split in the Coalition doesn’t stem from the reported surge in support for One Nation. Perhaps this week is not all about One Nation, but what has been building for months is about One Nation.

Voting intentions in this week’s Newspoll recorded One Nation on 22% of the national vote, for the first time polling ahead of the Coalition on 21%. Labor’s support slipped to 32% with the Greens on 12% and Others 13%.

Similar results from lesser known pollsters released since the start of January were dismissed. But when Newspoll starts reporting a surge in One Nation support, it gets more attention from the political classes.

Welcome back to your weekly federal politics update, where Courtney Gould gets you up to speed on the happenings from Parliament House.

As parliament wound up for the year, Labor joked two ghosts of Christmas past stalked the hallways.

The first, Malcolm Turnbull, was back for the unveiling of his prime ministerial portrait. The second, was Turnbull's former deputy prime minister, Barnaby Joyce, who confirmed his exit from the Nationals.

It's been more than seven years since Turnbull last addressed a crowd at Parliament House, on his final day as prime minister.

For a moment, just a moment, it looked as if Anthony Albanese could break down in tears. On the final parliamentary sitting day of a long election year, the prime minister was speaking at the unveiling of Malcolm Turnbull’s official prime ministerial portrait.

Albanese wanted the crowd to know something about Malcolm the man, not just the politician.

“On a very personal level, there was a moment, nothing to do with politics, where Malcolm and [wife] Lucy, to me, showed their character, where they reached out to me at a difficult time in my personal life, and just had me to dinner,” Albanese said. “No one knows about it.”

‘Secret’ Aukus committee ‘doesn’t pass the pub test’, says crossbench MP

Crossbench MPs are not happy at the prospect of a secretive new committee of federal parliament to consider the Aukus nuclear submarine deal and Australia’s involvement in military conflicts.

Labor and the Coalition are preparing to pass legislation to establish a joint house and Senate committee on defence, with a makeup mirroring the powerful parliamentary joint committee on intelligence and security.
