Alone Australia’s new season is ‘the polar opposite’ of what we’ve seen before

For its fourth season, SBS’s survival reality contest Alone Australia went to the ends of the earth in search of a fresh challenge – and not just metaphorically speaking.

“I would say this is quite literally the polar opposite of anything we’ve done before,” says executive producer Riima Daher of the show’s relocation to the Arctic Circle. “So many familiar features of the survival game are still there, so much of the psychological game is still there. But we basically flipped it on its head to take southern-hemisphere survivors up to the northern hemisphere to see what happens.”

WA survivalist Jasper Harvey heads to Finland for season four of SBS’s hit show Alone Australia

When Jasper Harvey, a 24 year-old permaculture practitioner and educator from WA’s South West, decided to apply for the latest season of the hit reality series Alone Australia, he had no idea just how far from home he’d end up.

This year, SBS transplanted 10 brave survivalists — Harvey amongst them — to the wild and spectacularly beautiful area of Sapmi in Finland.

It’s a spectacular place. A place where bears, wolves and reindeer roam freely; where the northern lights shine across frozen subzero wilderness.

It’s also a heck of a long way from Margaret River. And for Harvey, who had never seen snow or ice before — let alone had to live in it for weeks at a time — the Arctic Circle was quite the adjustment.

‘This doesn’t happen to us’: Family’s horror after Sydney day care abuser unmasked

Walking to his young son’s bedroom to check his clothes against footage of a day care worker’s abuse, Tom* had one thought: “This doesn’t happen to us.”

“It’s almost overwhelmingly upsetting to the point when you almost block it out of your mind,” Tom said.

“There was a strong desire to believe that whatever happened, it was not a big deal.”

Tom shared his story with the Herald as police revealed how they caught his child’s abuser, Sydney day care worker David William James. The 27-year-old was sentenced on Thursday to 12 years’ prison with a non-parole period of seven years for sexual offences relating to nine children.

‘Egregious’ childcare worker jailed for filming kids

A childcare worker who captured explicit images of children younger than 10 will remain in prison until at least 2031.

David William James was sentenced at Sydney’s Downing Centre District Court on Thursday after he pleaded guilty to 11 charges related to the production and possession of child abuse material.

The 28-year-old committed the crimes against children as young as five years old at six out-of-school centres across Sydney between April 2021 and May 2024.

In a lengthy sentencing, Judge Guy Newton said the offending was disturbing and depraved.

“In each case he was the child’s carer … the offender abused both a position of trust and authority,” he told the court.

Fine Weather Across New Zealand Leaves Raglan Waiting For Waves

A stubborn high-pressure system delivering stunning autumn weather across much of New Zealand is proving ideal for beachgoers, road trips and outdoor events — but not so perfect for the world’s best surfers waiting patiently at Raglan’s iconic Manu Bay.

Competition at the Corona Cero New Zealand Pro Presented by Bonsoy was again called off today as small surf conditions continued to hold across the Waikato coastline, with organisers now eyeing an improving swell forecast through the final three days of the event window.

What We Do with CT Surfers Before They Compete (It’s Not What You Think)

It’s ON! Coverage Starts 10:00am Saturday FJT (Noon Friday in Hawaii) at the Corona Cero New Zealand Pro Presented by Bonsoy:

A raw training session with Griffin and Crosby Colapinto as they prepare for the inaugural Corona Cero New Zealand Pro at Manu Bay, Raglan. This is stop 4 of the 2026 Championship Tour and the first time the CT has come to New Zealand’s most famous left.

These sessions are not about building strength or conditioning. The hard work is already done. When surfers are competing at this level and surfing every day, the goal of a pre-event session is connection — dialing in body awareness, restoring range, and making sure everything is moving and talking to each other before they hit the water. Think of it as tuning the instrument, not building it.
