The pursuit of happiness: Max Gawn on being the face of Melbourne

Max Gawn will walk into the MCG for his 250th game on Sunday as the defining figure in Melbourne’s modern era – and, for many, the most influential ruckman of his generation.
It’s a milestone that speaks not just to Gawn’s longevity, but to his dominance, durability and reinvention across one of the most volatile periods in the Demons’ history.
Gawn has no interest in becoming one of those veterans who linger beyond their used-by date.
As he approaches the milestone, the Melbourne captain is not measuring his career in seasons survived, but in standards maintained – a philosophy he underlined in round one when he overpowered St Kilda ruckman Tom De Koning in a decisive final-quarter performance that swung the game.

Demons want on-field response in Gawn milestone game
Earning inspirational skipper Max Gawn a win in his 250th match should be the by-product of Melbourne mounting a response against Carlton, not their motivation says coach Steven King.
The Demons are coming off a disappointing loss to Fremantle ahead of Gawn and defensive stalwart Tom McDonald's shared milestone match at the MCG on Sunday.
"I don't think I need to get up and say 'let's win for Max'. I'd like to see a response regardless … and Max will lead the way with how he goes about it, and the rest of his teammates will follow," King said.
Carlton counterpart Michael Voss conceded the Blues would have to give Gawn's milestone some "attention" given his importance to the Demons.
