A flood watch remains in place for large parts of Queensland, with the state's north warned to brace for a possible drenching in the week ahead.

A broad trough system is expected to migrate north and linger for several days, increasing shower and storm activity in the region.

The Bureau of Meteorology says the severe thunderstorm warning has eased for the greater Wollongong area, but the redevelopment of storms remains possible.

A trough is triggering severe thunderstorms and causing a moist and unstable environment, with supercell thunderstorms detected to the north-east of the ACT.

The bureau says the storms are likely to produce heavy rainfall, which may lead to flash flooding, large hailstones, and damaging wind, and were detected near the north-west parts of the Wollondilly Shire, Nowra, and the Morton National Park.

Severe Thunderstorms And Hail Forecast For Parts Of NSW This Weekend

After a long stretch of sunny days, parts of NSW are expected to see showers and thunderstorms moving in toward the weekend, with hail possible in some areas.

Sydney may be hot and sunny today, but a significant shift in the weather pattern is developing that is set to bring thunderstorms across parts of NSW in the coming days. Moist tropical air is spreading south through the country and combining with a broad low-pressure system, creating widespread storm activity across multiple states in the country. While the heaviest rain is expected in parts of central and northern Australia, NSW is also likely to see showers and thunderstorms starting from Friday and into the weekend.

Heavy rain forecast for parts of Queensland after two rescued from floodwaters

Thunderstorms and heavy rain are forecast for small parts of Queensland after two people were rescued from floodwaters on Saturday.

Swiftwater rescue crews retrieved two people from vehicles stuck in floodwaters in separate incidents near Beaudesert, while the State Emergency Service responded to more than 130 calls for help.

On the Sunshine Coast, Kenilworth was hit with 65 millimetres of rain in 30 minutes on Saturday, while Kooralbyn, on the Scenic Rim, recorded an overnight total of 136 millimetres.

Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) senior forecaster Lauren Murphy said a rain band extending from the state's north-west to south-east would bring patchy rain and showers, with the potential for severe storms to return.

Much of northern and eastern Australia faces a risk of severe thunderstorms on Saturday afternoon and evening, with millions of people potentially in the firing line.

“It’s another severe thunderstorm outbreak for eastern parts of the country. It could be an active one,” said Angus Hines, senior meteorologist at the Bureau of Meteorology on Saturday.

The warning comes after storms swept over south-east Queensland on Friday, with the ABC reporting that more than 11,000 homes lost power after late afternoon and evening storms.
