Brother Bear: Meninga continues recruitment drive with historic signing

The Perth Bears are continuing to build their strong roster for their inaugural 2027 campaign, with the latest signing coming as Kit Laulilii.

It will be the first time the new franchise has signed two brothers to its club, with Luke Laulilii already committing to terms in January to head to the west.

Mal Meninga's historic signing will see the two Wests Tigers talents line up in Bears colours next season, with the Daily Telegraph reporting big-brother Kit has inked a two-year deal.

Meninga's strong recruitment drive has seen the likes of Tyran Wishart, Scott Sorensen, Nick Meaney, Siosifa Talakai, and many others commit to the move.

Team selection: History beckons in first home game of 2026

Find out who will take the field in the Pies' first home game of 2026.

Collingwood has named its team ahead of Saturday night’s Round 1 clash with the Adelaide Crows at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The Magpies will go into the match with the same side that defeated St Kilda by 12 points in Opening Round.

Captain Darcy Moore will again be unavailable as he recovers from a calf injury. In Moore’s absence, defender Brayden Maynard will assume the captaincy role on Saturday night.

Forward Dan McStay will make his 200th appearance at AFL level against the Crows. The 30-year-old moved to Collingwood as an unrestricted free agent in 2023 after 161 games for the Brisbane Lions, donning the black and white 38 times since.

‘They may admit that…’: AFL contender’s unnerving reality as huge question confronts powerhouse

Adelaide is looking to overcome a 12-year Collingwood curse when the sides meet for a rematch of last year’s qualifying final on Super Saturday.

And for a three-time premiership star, the reason for the hoodoo is “really real” and set to play a hand again.

Watch every match of every round of the Premiership Season LIVE and ad-break free during play on FOX FOOTY, available on Kayo Sports | New to Kayo? Join now and get your first month for just $1.

The Crows haven’t beaten the Magpies at the MCG since 2014, and overall have won just one game in their past 13 attempts against the Victorian juggernaut.

Alcaraz chases history at Australian Open despite split while women’s draw is open

Sinner is the Spaniard’s clear rival but Swiatek, Rybakina, Bencic, Gauff and others are in Sabalenka’s way

Everyone wants to know exactly why Carlos Alcaraz split up with Juan Carlos Ferrero. It was, by some margin, one of the most surprising coaching separations in the history of tennis, a decision that came with no clear warning immediately after the greatest season of Alcaraz’s career. The discourse has since ranged from his alleged determination to reside exclusively at home in El Palmar, Murcia and train in his home academy, to potential discontent at Ferrero’s absences from numerous tournaments last year.

'A chapter of life' ends – Alcaraz on Ferrero split

Carlos Alcaraz won the French Open and US Open last year

Six-time major winner Carlos Alcaraz described his surprise split with long-time coach Juan Carlos Ferrero as a "chapter of life that has to end".

The world number one surprised tennis fans in December when he announced he had parted ways with Ferrero, who had coached him since he was 15 years old.

BBC Sport understands Ferrero did not want to leave his role, but Alcaraz said on Friday they "closed this chapter in mutual".

He explained: "We, as I said, both are still friends, good relationship. But we just decided like this.

'Chance to be part of history': Curran joins Perth Bears

The new year has kicked off with a bang for the Perth Bears with Bulldogs forward Josh Curran agreeing to join the club on a three-year deal to start in 2027.

A proud Dharug man, Curran represented the Indigenous All Stars in 2024 and is certain to be mainstay for the Bears forward pack in 2027 and beyond.

Since making his debut in 2019, the 26-year-old has played 106 NRL matches for the Sydney Roosters, New Zealand Warriors and Canterbury Bulldogs.

Curran’s tenacity and commitment on the field is matched only by his attitude to make a positive difference in the community off it.

Josh Curran will join the Bears on a three-year contract in 2027.

Curran has played more than 100 NRL matches and represented the Indigenous All-Stars.

The Bears remain in the hunt for Tino Fa'asuamaleaui, who has yet to announce whether he will stay with the Titans.

The Perth Bears have landed their most experienced NRL player so far in their recruitment drive, signing Canterbury's Josh Curran on a three-year deal.

Curran officially became the eighth player to join the franchise on Wednesday, confirming he would head west after finishing with the Bulldogs this year.

Deepti Sharma overtakes Australian Megan Schutt for WT20I world record; closes in on legendary fellow Jhulan Goswami

Deepti Sharma overtook Australian fast bowler Megan Schutt on Tuesday for most wickets in women's T20Is during the fifth and final game against Sri Lanka at the Greenfield Stadium in Thiruvananthampuram. The feat came after Deepti trapped Sri Lankan Nilakshika Silva in front.

With this wicket, Deepti now has 152 wickets in the shortest format of the game in women's cricket as compared Schutt's 151. Pakistan's Nida Dar is third in the list with 144 scalps.

It has been a career-defining year for Deepti. An architect of India's first-ever ICC Women's World Cup win, Deepti was named the Player of the Tournament for her 20 wickets and 200-plus runs in the global event, thus becoming the first to do so in a singe edition of the event.

Bijan Robinson closing in on Falcons history

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — Running back Bijan Robinson is on pace to finish with more scrimmage yards in a single season than any player in Atlanta Falcons history.

With two games remaining on the Falcons' schedule, Robinson has gained 2,026 yards from scrimmage. That is 150 scrimmage yards shy of Atlanta's current franchise record of 2,176 scrimmage yards, set by running back William Andrews in 1983. He'll need 151 yards in the Falcons' last two games to set a new single-season scrimmage yard record.

Robinson is averaging 135 scrimmage yards per game, putting him on pace to finish with 2,296 in 17 games. He has topped the 150-yard mark six times this season, so there's a possibility Robinson accomplishes this feat Monday night in the Falcons' Week 17 prime-time game against the Los Angeles Rams inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

'Monday Night Football' turns historic as Matthew Stafford, Bijan Robinson etch names in NFL record book

Matthew Stafford and Bijan Robinson both made history during Monday night's game between the Rams and Falcons.

Stafford passed former Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger for sixth on the NFL's career passing list. Robinson broke 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey's NFL record for the most yards from scrimmage before turning 24 years old.

Robinson, who entered Monday night's game needing 68 yards to surpass McCaffrey, set the record on a 93-yard touchdown run that gave the Falcons a 21-0 halftime lead.

The milestone cemented Robinson as one of the elite young offensive players in league history, while Stafford's climb up the passing list underscored his longevity and late-career resurgence. Stafford entered the game with 63,988 career passing yards, while Roethlisberger finished his 18-year career with 64,088 yards and two Super Bowl titles.

'History shows Piastri will be even better in 2026'

Oscar Piastri may have just missed out on the title this year, but IndyCar race winner and F1 TV analyst James Hinchcliffe reckons the Aussie will be even more impressive in 2026.

Much has (rightly) been made of the incredible seasons both Lando Norris and Max Verstappen have had. It was a title battle between two titans of the sport that raged all season long and came down to the last lap of the last race.

It was, in fact, a battle between three titans of the sport, which ebbed and flowed, culminating in a final race title decider. Oscar Piastri was the championship leader and odds-on favourite for the crown as far into the year as September.

Oscar Piastri will be looking to strike back next year after missing out on a maiden F1 title to Lando Norris in 2025.

Oscar Piastri has been told his results in the opening rounds of next year's F1 campaign will be critical when it comes to how McLaren manage its drivers during the season.

Piastri and team-mate Lando Norris were left free to race throughout the 2025 campaign as they battled for championship success.

It generated questions late in the year if one should be prioritised as Max Verstappen closed on the pair in the drivers' standings.

Brundle claims Oscar Piastri ‘misread’ after Norris title defeat

Martin Brundle believes that Oscar Piastri was “misread” in F1 2025. According to Brundle, Piastri is not as “stone cold, horizontal” as thought.

But, Brundle regards Piastri as a World Champion of the future, despite that setback of his title defeat to McLaren teammate Lando Norris. McLaren team principal Andrea Stella went a step further, and predicted “multiple” titles in the future of Piastri.

Piastri hoovered up titles on the junior scene, and for large parts of F1 2025, it appeared as though he was set to become Formula 1 World Champion in just his third season.

Piastri was 34 points clear out front after Zandvoort, but fell into a run of six grands prix without a podium. That included a very uncharacteristic error-strewn Azerbaijan GP. Piastri crashed in qualifying, and crashed out in the early stages of the race.

John Lennon was killed 45 years ago today. America learned about it from Howard Cosell on Monday Night Football.

Millions of Americans were watching the Patriots and Dolphins on “Monday Night Football,” a humdrum game between two mediocre teams, when Howard Cosell delivered the news that still feels shocking 45 years later.

“Remember, this is just a football game, no matter who wins or loses,” Cosell said in his distinctive staccato just before 11 p.m. on Dec. 8, 1980. “John Lennon, outside of his apartment building on the West Side of New York City — the most famous, perhaps, of all the Beatles — shot twice in the back, rushed to Roosevelt Hospital, dead on arrival.”

It was an indelible TV moment, much like Walter Cronkite’s trembly, on-the-verge-of-tears announcement in 1963 that President John F. Kennedy had been assassinated in Dallas. Lennon, the world soon learned, had been shot four times in the back as he and wife Yoko Ono were walking into the Dakota, the historic Manhattan co-op where the couple lived with their 5-year-old son, Sean. (The killer, Mark David Chapman, is still in prison.)
