Which states get a public holiday for Anzac Day?

Many people will be laying wreaths and wearing poppies for Anzac Day on Saturday.  (ABC News: Che Chorley)

Anzac Day is coming up on Saturday, but does that mean you get a long weekend?

Anzac Day is a public holiday in each state and territory.

When Anzac Day falls on a weekend, many employees are already not working because they have weekends off.

Some state governments decide to observe a public holiday on a weekday, which results in those workers having a day off work.

This year, that bonus day off is on Monday — but that's not Australia-wide.

Only three of Australia's eight states and territories have public holidays on Monday.

Anzac Day falls on a Saturday this year, which means in Queensland we don’t get an extra day off.

However, restrictions to opening hours and alcohol sales apply just as if the Saturday were a weekday Anzac Day public holiday.

That means non-exempt businesses must remain shut on the day, and some exempt ones can’t open until 1pm or 1.30pm.

Large retailers, including supermarkets, department stores and hardware shops, are “non-exempt shops”, and must remain closed on Anzac Day.

So that means no Coles, Woolies, Aldi, Bunnings, Myer, David Jones, Kmart, Target, or Big W (except the Woolworths at Brisbane Airport, which is open from 1pm).

Anzac Day is held on 25 April each year to commemorate Australian and New Zealand Army Corps soldiers who have served and died in military combat.

The date marks the landings at Gallipoli, Türkiye, during the First World War in 1915, the first major military action fought by Australian soldiers during the conflict.

Each year, the sacrifices made by Anzac soldiers in that and all subsequent conflicts are honoured through dawn services, marches, and performances of the Last Post.

Is Anzac Day Saturday or Monday? And what about shops, surcharges and pay?

The national day of remembrance held annually on April 25 will look a little different this year due to it falling on a Saturday.

Anzac Day is one of just three-and-a-half days a year when almost all shops must be closed under the Shop Trading Hours Act.

But as it falls on a weekend, the public holiday is next Monday (the 27th).

That means most shops must close on Saturday until 1pm. But businesses also need to work out how to calculate staff pay for Saturday, or Monday.

The national day of remembrance held on April 25 commemorates the 1915 landing of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) at Gallipoli during WWI.

Western Sydney airport offers new gateway to Singapore, but travellers face long city commute

The single-runway Western Sydney International Airport will be able to handle up to 10 million passengers a year when it opens in October.

SYDNEY – Singapore Airlines (SIA) became the first airline to start selling tickets for flights into and out of Western Sydney International Airport, but passengers using the upcoming airport will face limited connectivity to the city centre for now.

The airline started selling tickets on March 25 for a daily service between the airport and Changi Airport, starting with the first flight from Singapore on Nov 23.

The A$5.3 billion (S$4.7 billion) airport – which will be Sydney’s second international airport – is due to open in late October.

One Stop To The US: Air New Zealand Set To Become Western Sydney’s 1st International Airline

Air New Zealand is set to become the first international airline to operate to Sydney's newest airport, Western Sydney International Airport (WSI), with the airline commencing services thrice weekly from October 26. This new link will provide those residing in the western suburbs of Australia's largest city with the opportunity to make the most of Air New Zealand's extensive international network from Auckland Airport (AKL).

Many New Zealanders reside in Australia, and according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, up to 150,000 call Sydney home. The long-awaited Western Sydney International Airport will attract airlines due to its lack of a curfew (compared to Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD), which is restricted to operations between 6:00 am and 11:00 pm daily).

The ACT government has declared Anzac Day a public holiday after facing union pressure.

The ACT was going to be the only state or territory not to mark Saturday, April 25 as a public holiday this year because it falls on a weekend.

Industrial Relations Minister Michael Pettersson announced a reversal on the decision on Monday night after meeting with shopkeeper union delegates last week.

The warning is in place for people in the area bounded by Marnigarup South Road to the west, Meechi Road and Doubtful Island Road to the south, the coastline to the east, and Quiss Road, Pabelup Drive and Fitzgerald Inlet Track to the north-east in Bremer Bay, Fitzgerald River National Park, Gairdner and Jerramungup.

Collie bushfire: Residents told to stay on high alert as firefighters battle to contain blaze

A bushfire burning in the South West town of Collie has been controlled, but locals are being warned to stay alert.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services downgraded the emergency warning to a watch and act about 4.27pm on Wednesday after firefighters managed to get the blaze under control.

However, the bushfire is still not contained, with locals in the area bounded by Crampton Street, Prinsep Street, Mungalup Road, Minninup Road, including Minninup Pool, Skipworth Road and McVee Road told to stay alert and monitor their surroundings.

The blaze was first reported about 1pm, with firefighters rushing to the scene to battle the inferno. Water bombers were also sent to assist ground crews.
