Homeowners warned as new ATO crackdown takes effect: 'Slipped under the radar'

Australians with a second home are being urged to make sure they are aware of a new approach from the ATO as rules tighten about what homeowners can claim at tax time. A new, stricter interpretation of existing provisions means that owners could be caught out when trying to claim expense deductions they lodged in previous years.

Susan Franks from Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ) said the new approach from the ATO "is a major shift" for hundreds of thousands of taxpayers with a holiday home which they periodically rent out. The group is warning owners may need to rethink how they make their home available after the new rules began last month.

Record number of homeowners face loan default

Families are staring down a debt nightmare, with a record number of homeowners now at risk of defaulting on their loans after falling behind on their repayments, new industry data has revealed.

The figures showed the number of households at risk of default jumped 18 per cent nationally over the past three months, marking the steepest rise since risk tracking records began in 2001.

It’s raised fresh alarm over the pressure facing borrowers after three interest rate hikes this year, plus previous years of soaring living costs and stubborn inflation.

The research by Digital Finance Analytics, done for comparison group OurTop10, indicated households were running out of a buffer of emergency funds, leaving them vulnerable to more rate hikes.

National news: Mortgage stress rises to highest level in two years

More than a million Aussie borrowers could find themselves trapped in a “mortgage prison” as extreme repayment stress jumps to highest level since 2024 – and it’s lower-income households who are copping the brunt.

According to new Roy Morgan research, the nationwide rise is being driven primarily by households earning less than $100,000 and those in lower socio-economic brackets.

About 1.53 million homeowners are currently “at risk” of mortgage stress. iStock

The data found an estimated 1.06 million mortgage holders (19.8 per cent) were ‘Extremely at Risk’ of mortgage stress in the six months to June 2026, up from 16.7 per cent in December 2025, and now higher than in June 2024 (19.3 per cent).
