Alan Shearer gives honest verdict on Match of the Day future after BBC rip up sports coverage

Former England striker Alan Shearer isn't worried about Match of the Day going the same way as Football Focus after the long-running BBC show was cancelled. The broadcaster confirmed the final episode of Football Focus will air this weekend, more than 50 years after it first graced our screens.

The move is part of a series of changes to the BBC's sports coverage which have seen high-profile shows find new homes. England's Six Nations fixtures have moved to ITV while the Boat Race is now shown on Channel 4.

Dan Walker makes BBC return as Alex Scott fights back tears live on air

Dan Walker made a return to the BBC to pay tribute on the final ever Football Focus programme, with the long-standing show set to end at the close of the season.

It was announced in late April that following more than 50 years on air, the television magazine programme would cease broadcasting.

During the opening moments of their broadcast, several presenters from across the years recorded messages, with Walker amongst them.

He left the broadcaster and Football Focus in 2022 to join Channel 5.

Present host Alex Scott was also featured in the package and appeared to be fighting back tears as she sat down for her interview.

Pleasant and polite, Carlos Alcaraz gives off the impression he does not have a bad bone in his body.

So when the world number one was asked about Alex de Minaur following his triumph in their Australian Open quarterfinal, you can guarantee his comments were intended as feedback rather than criticism.

Alex de Minaur has been knocked out of the Australian Open by world number one Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets.

"When he's playing against the best or the top player, he's trying to be more aggressive, which sometimes [means] he's just out of his comfort zone," Alcaraz said after his 7-5, 6-2, 6-1 win over de Minaur.

Tennis world rallies around Alex de Minaur after heartbreaking scenes after Aus Open loss

Tennis fans and commentators are urging Alex de Minaur not to give up hope after the Aussie star came unstuck at the quarter-final stage of a grand slam once again. The World No.6 enjoyed a brilliant Australian Open campaign to make the last eight, producing dominant wins over 29th seed Frances Tiafoe and 10th seed Alexander Bublik.

But he was no match for World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz on Tuesday night, going down in straight sets 5-7 2-6 1-6. It once again exposed the gaping divide between Alcaraz and World No.2 Sinner and the rest of the field.

De Minaur is now a combined 0-19 in his career against Alcaraz and Sinner – 0-6 against Alcaraz and 0-13 against Sinner. He's now made seven quarter-finals appearances at grand slams but never made a semi, becoming the third man after Andrey Rublev and Tommy Robredo to achieve that unwanted feat.

Alex de Minaur has lost all seven of his grand slam quarter-finals.

This is how the seven defeats played out (prefix denotes opponent's ranking):

A grand slam lightweight hitting the scales at barely 70kg, de Minaur walked away from his maiden major quarter-final hoping in "years to come I'll get bigger, I'll get stronger" after being bossed from the back by the tournament's eventual champion.
