Preston in hospital on drip before Bulldogs game, five players with COVID

Canterbury have kept alive their slim finals hopes despite back-rower Jacob Preston spending two days in hospital on a drip, five players contracting COVID-19 and winger Jacob Kiraz secretly playing with a torn calf for the past three weeks.

In yet another pre-match disruption, centre Matt Burton missed training in the lead-up to Saturday night’s must-win clash with St George Illawarra to return home to Dubbo for a family issue.

And before kick-off, Enari Tuala was ruled out with a knee injury which he aggravated at training.

As far as preparations go, it is hard to envisage there being more interruptions.

A hospitalised second-rower, a string of players with COVID-19 and a family tragedy headlined a staggering list of misfortunes that befell Canterbury prior to their crucial defeat of St George Illawarra.

Their finals' hopes effectively on the line, the ninth-placed Bulldogs trained with a skeleton crew ahead of Saturday's 44-14 thrashing of the Dragons at Allianz Stadium.

During the week, star back-rower Jacob Preston battled both headlines about his playing future and an elbow infection that required an IV drip.

Sri Lanka star sent for precautionary scan following injury

Experienced Sri Lankan batter Dinesh Chandimal has been taken to hospital for a precautionary scan after sustaining a shoulder injury while fielding against India on Day 4 of the first Test in Galle.

Chandimal was stationed at deep midwicket when he sprinted towards deep square in an attempt to prevent a boundary. He dived to make the stop but landed heavily on his shoulder, appearing to injure his right shoulder in the process.

The 36-year-old was immediately attended to by his teammates and the team medical staff after appearing to be in considerable discomfort. He was eventually able to walk off the field, clutching his head, neck and shoulder.

EXPLAINED: Why Pasindu Sooriybandara made debut for Sri Lanka in 2nd innings of 1st Test vs India at Galle

India vs Sri Lanka 2026 1st Test: Sri Lanka had a 26-year-old Pasindu Sooriybandara making debut in the 1st Test vs India at the Galle International Stadium. But unlike most of other cricketers, Sooriybandara was making his debut in the second innings and not the first. In one of the rare occurrences in Test cricket, Sooriybandara became a Test debutant as a ‘concussion substitute’.

Sooriybandara’s delight at making a debut against India lasted only a few minutes though. The young Sri Lankan batter was dismissed for a first-ball duck by left-arm spinner Manav Suthar after coming out to bat at the No. 3 position with the Lankans chasing 372 runs to win in the 4th innings.

ALM Match Preview: "Our mindset is that nothing is going to hold us back and we keep pushing forward" – Griff

Glory ALM Head Coach Adam Griffiths is backing his charges to bounce back immediately from last weekend’s unfortunate home defeat at the hands of Sydney FC when they return to HBF Park to tackle Adelaide United on Saturday evening (kick-off at 6:45pm, tickets available HERE).Click HERE to watch his full pre-match media conference. The 1-0 loss to the Sky Blues ended a run of three consecutive victories, two of them on the road, which propelled the men in purple into the top six on the competition ladder. But Griffiths feels that plenty of encouragement could be drawn from his side’s performance on the night.“We want to play a brand of football that helps us win and in terms of my position and the team’s position, our mindset is that nothing is going to hold us back and we keep pushing forward,” he said.“Every team is different, but we’ll take learnings on our own performance, such as how we can improve in the final third.“We had a lot of box entries, now we have to increase our quality in those actions and then if we can increase our quality in those actions, we not only dominate, we destroy teams.”Currently positioned one point and one place behind Glory, Adelaide have lost their last three, but Griffiths remains wary of the threat posed by Airton Andrioli’s side.“Adelaide’s a talented team, they play a lot of rotations and movements and they probably align more to the Newcastle style of play,” he said.“We’re looking forward to a difficult game, but it’s something that the boys are excited about.”The Head Coach went on to provide an update on strike duo Adam Taggart and Jaiden Kucharski, both of whom were forced from the field by injury against Sydney FC.“Taggs looks like he’s probably going to be out for another week… and JK is probably two to three weeks,” he said“We don’t really have any choice but to replace them, so someone has to step up and take that opportunity.“That’s been the message this week: who wants to take that opportunity to step up and show us what they’ve got.“Every team has injuries… and we’re in the same position as most teams.“We will look at ourselves and see how we can improve.”As for the Reds, their three wins this term have all come at home and they have lost each of their four away games to date via a 2-1 scoreline. The most recent of those defeats came at Melbourne Victory last weekend, with Dylan Pierias’ goal coming too late in the piece to affect the outcome.Pierias is a player who has been a thorn in Glory’s side in the past, scoring four times in 14 appearances against the WA side, but the Reds’ main attacking threat this term has come from Luka Jovanovic who has scored three goals and claimed two assists.Other players to look out for in the opposition’s ranks include experienced Socceroos schemer Craig Goodwin and Dutch ‘keeper Joshua Smits who has made 33 saves in his eight appearances this season.Smits’ compatriot Bart Vriends, however, will miss the trip to Perth due to a hamstring injury. This fixture has provided plenty of excitement in recent years, with the last five meetings between the two clubs yielding an aggregate of 29 goals.Saturday will mark the 29th edition of this fixture at HBF Park, with Glory having secured 12 wins to Adelaide’s eight .Match DetailsIsuzu UTE A-League 2025/26 Season Round 9Perth Glory v Adelaide UnitedHBF ParkSaturday 20 December 2025Kick-off: 6:45pm WSTPerth Glory Squad: 2.Charbel SHAMOON, 3.Sam SUTTON, 4.Scott WOOTTON (co-c), 5.Riley FOXE, 6.Brandon O’NEILL, 7.Nicholas PENNINGTON, 8.Callum TIMMINS, 16.Gabriel POPOVIC, 17.Arion SULEMANI, 18.Rhys BOZINOVSKI, 19.Josh RISDON, 20.Trent OSTLER, 21.Adam BUGARIJA, 24.Andriano LEBIB, 26.Khoa NGO, 27.Will FRENEY, 29.Matt SUTTON (gk), 34.Tom LAWRENCE, 40.Ryan WARNER (gk), 45.Brian KALTAK(Two to be omitted)Ins: 16.Gabriel POPOVIC, 20.Trent OSTLER, 21.Adam BUGARIJA, 24.Andriano LEBIBOuts: 9.Jaiden KUCHARSKI (injured), 22.Adam TAGGART (co-c) (injured)Unavailable: 9.Jaiden KUCHARSKI (injured), 10.Luke AMOS (injured), 11.Lachlan WALES (injured), 13.Cameron COOK (gk) (injured), 15.Zach LISOLAJSKI (injured), 22.Adam TAGGART (co-c) (injured), 25.Sebastian DESPOTOVSKI (injured), 31.Joel ANASMO (injured)Adelaide United squad: 4.Panagiotis KIKIANIS, 7.Ryan KITTO, 9.Luka JOVANOVIĆ, 10.Juan MUÑIZ, 11.Craig GOODWIN, 14.Jay BARNETT, 19.Yaya DUKULY, 20.Dylan PIEIRAS, 22.Joshua SMITS, 23.Luke DUZEL, 36.Panashe MADANHA, 40.Ethan COX, 44.Ryan WHITE, 52.Sotiri PHILLIS 55.Ethan ALAGICH, 62.Fabian TALLADIRA, 65.Joey GARUCCIO, 71.Vinko STANISIC, 74.Amlani TATU, 87.
