July was the hottest month in the US since records began in 1895

July was the hottest month ever recorded in the United States, according to data released Monday by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The month featured long, intense heat domes that led to record hot temperatures from the East Coast to the Plains and Southwestern states. NOAA’s temperature records date back to 1895.

By the end of the month, large wildfires were burning in the Pacific Northwest and Canada, mirroring what has been taking place in Europe, which is having its hottest summer on record.

July’s average temperature in the Lower 48 states was 3.3 degrees Fahrenheit above the 20th-century average, NOAA reported. This was about 0.1 to 0.2 degrees warmer than July 1936 and July 2012 — the previous record holders — NOAA stated.

Contiguous US breaks its record for hottest month ever, NOAA says

The contiguous United States sizzled to its hottest month ever last month, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. July averaged 76.89 degrees Fahrenheit (24.94 degrees Celsius) across the Lower 48 states, eclipsing the Dust Bowl’s July 1936 by an eighth of a degree.

KENSINGTON, Maryland (AP) — The contiguous United States sizzled to its hottest month ever last month, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

July averaged 76.89 degrees Fahrenheit (24.94 degrees Celsius) across the Lower 48 states, eclipsing the Dust Bowl’s July 1936 by an eighth of a degree. Records go back to 1895.

“It’s not good when you’re breaking records from the Dust Bowl, which we are in this case,” said meteorologist Jeff Masters of Yale Climate Connections. “And that was a crazy sort of situation where you put tens of millions of people in motion. You had this great migration because of the drought and the heat that hit the center of the U.S. — just a cataclysmic event in U. S. history. If we’re exceeding records from The Dust Bowl, that says that we’re in deep trouble.”

July was hottest month ever recorded in US as heatwaves scorched country

Scientists have made clear that the elevated heat in the US was being amplified by the human-caused climate crisis

July was the hottest month ever recorded in the US, with repeated, scorching heatwaves across much of the country helping shatter all previous monthly temperature records stretching back over the full 132 years of reliable measurements.

Last month’s average temperature was 3.3F (1.8C) higher than the 20th century average for the contiguous United States, which excludes Alaska and Hawaii, according to new data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (Noaa).

This means the month was the hottest July, and hottest of all months, in records that go back to 1895. It surpasses previous high marks set in July 1936, in the teeth of Dust Bowl conditions, and July 2012.

Europe heatwave: France shuts Eiffel Tower on its hottest day on record

Paris/Madrid: Forty people have drowned in France over recent days as they sought to cool down to escape record heat, as a heatwave swept across much of Europe.

Britain, Italy, Switzerland and Spain also sweltered in extreme heat on Tuesday, with record temperatures in some areas disrupting schools and transport networks and forcing tourist sites – including the Eiffel Tower – to shut.

Europe is warming at more than twice the global average, according to the World Meteorological Organisation, making such prolonged heat episodes increasingly likely.

France experienced its hottest day on record on Tuesday, Meteo France forecaster said, with a peak of 44.3 degrees in one town in the south-west.

The scene in St James's Park in London on Saturday. Temperatures are set to soar across the weekend after the day was declared the hottest of the year so far

Temperatures will continue to soar across the bank holiday weekend following the hottest day of the year so far on Saturday.

As of 16:00 BST, temperatures had reached 30.3C at Frittenden in Kent, beating the previous day's maximum temperature of 28.4C in London.

The heat is forecast to intensify throughout the long weekend, reaching heatwave criteria in a number of locations.

Daytime highs are forecast to reach the upper 20s Celsius in many areas, with the low 30s Celsius likely in the week ahead.

'Heat leaves Africa and Med in shade' and 'Can't cope without Catherine'

There's a mix of stories on Saturday's papers. A heatwave is set to break the spring record in the UK, as bank holiday temperatures are on course to hit 33C, the i Weekend says. It adds that the UK will see hotter temperatures than parts of Africa and the Mediterranean as hot and humid air pushes across north-west Europe.

The Daily Telegraph leads with the news that families visiting popular tourist spots in the UK could face a holiday tax as mayors consider implementing "overnight visitor levies" to help struggling councils. The paper says as many as 10 of England's 14 regional mayors are considering the plan, which the Telegraph says could add as much as £300 to the cost of an average family getaway.

Sydney flight path shake-up locked in as cargo planes set to land at new airport

A shake-up of flight paths over Sydney will take effect on July 9, clearing the way for the first cargo aircraft to land at the city’s new $6 billion international airport around the clock later that month.

The flight paths for Sydney Airport most affected as part of the shake up to airspace over the city will be those used by aircraft taking off to the north from its main north-south runway before arcing towards the north-west over inner west suburbs such as Summer Hill, Ashfield and Croydon. The other change is to aircraft heading west from the east-west runway.

Darwin is forecast to reach 36°C this Thursday, which would make it the hottest day of 2026 to date by well over a degree.

The official Top End wet season runs from November to the end of April, but April is only a quarter as wet on average than Darwin’s rainiest month of January. Clear skies are much more common late in the wet season, and today’s sunshine will be accompanied by warm southeasterly winds.

Coastal town records hottest day ever but locals say BOM data is wrong

Keith Prest always has his eye on sea conditions. (ABC News: Jean Bell)

Warrnambool authorities say the regional city needs a weather station in the centre of town for accurate records and forecasts.

The area's weather station is 10 kilometres out of town and locals say it does not reflect conditions closer to the coast.

The Bureau of Meterology says there are no plans to move the weather station as it meets international guidelines and requirements.

If Keith Prest had a magic wand, the kite surfer from Victoria's south-west knows exactly what he would conjure into existence.

"I'd wish for an official weather station in central Warrnambool in a position that truly reflects the weather," he said.

Heavy rain soaks the Barkly and Central Australia, closing roads and inundating cattle stations

Heavy rain is lashing parts of the Barkly and Central Australia, with some areas of the Barkly recording hundreds of millimetres over the past few days.

Dozens of roads have been closed, impacting transport and freight across the Northern Territory, while cattle stations have been inundated by rain.

BOM says locally intense rainfall that could lead to dangerous and life-threatening flash flooding is possible across the southern Barkly and northern Simpson districts.

Heavy rain across large parts of the Barkly and Central Australia over the past three days has closed roads and inundated cattle stations, with more wet weather forecast to be on the way.

Severe flooding – in central Australia? How a vast humid air mass could soak the desert

Steve Turton has previously received funding from the Australian and Queensland governments.

CQUniversity Australia provides funding as a member of The Conversation AU.

On average, Australia’s driest town, Oodnadatta, gets just 172mm of rain a year. But the small town in inland South Australia is likely to get two years’ worth of rain in a single week.

Rainfall records are likely to topple across inland areas, as rains of 150–300mm are predicted this week, following heavy rains in recent days.

Heavy rains are lashing swathes of arid central Australia, as intensely humid tropical air from the Top End is pushed south. Alice Springs is on flood watch. The Trans-Australian rail line is cut amid track washouts. The Northern Territory’s main highway is closed.
