The Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen have declared a maritime blockade on Saudi Arabia, effective immediately, targeting ships carrying Saudi exports through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

The Houthis claim they are acting in response to Saudi Arabia's "oppressive siege" on Yemen over the past 12 years.

The move could put even greater pressure on international energy supplies.

US launches new strikes after Iran-backed Houthis declare blockade of another key oil route

Dubai/Riyadh: Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis said they would impose a naval blockade on Saudi Arabia, opening a potential new front against the US in its war with Iran and raising the threat to global energy supplies and trade beyond the Gulf.

The Houthis made their announcement despite signs that Tehran and Washington want to resume diplomacy to halt a worsening cycle of attacks that has all but wrecked a fragile interim agreement signed last month.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry said mediators had presented “proposals” to Tehran, signalling that diplomatic contacts remain active, but gave no details.

Oil prices rose briefly after the Houthi statement, but later fell back as traders held out hope of a diplomatic breakthrough. The insurance cost of shipping goods through the Red Sea rose on the increased risks for merchant shipping.

Houthis warn ‘fingers on the trigger’ as US-Israel war on Iran continues

The Iran-aligned Yemeni group have the ability to target key shipping lanes around the Arabian Peninsula.

Yemen’s Iran-allied Houthis say they are prepared to intervene militarily if other countries join the United States and Israel in their war against Iran, or if the Red Sea is used to launch attacks on their ally.

“We confirm that our fingers are on the trigger for direct military intervention” if any new alliances join Washington and Israel against Iran and its allies, or if the Red Sea is used for “hostile operations” against Iran, the group’s military spokesperson Yahya Saree said in a televised speech on Friday.

Iran war: Houthi restraint driven by domestic priorities

Despite threatening to intervene in the war in Iran, the Iran-backed Yemeni Houthi militia has so far remained passive. What are the reasons?

The warning from the Houthi militia was clear: "Yemen… has its finger on the trigger," Abdullah Sabri, spokesman for the Houthi-run Ministry of Foreign Affairs, cautioned earlier this week. The Houthis will take "appropriate measures" should the war against Iran continue. This includes any attempt to expand the war or deploy additional foreign forces, he warned.

Also the leader of the Islamist Shiite militia, Abdul-Malik Al-Houthi, said last Thursday in a video message: "We affirm our support for Iran, Lebanon, Palestine … and our readiness at the military level according to developments."
