Black Caps hurry to huge lead after Nicholls' ton

Recalled batter hits impressive hundred, Matt Henry takes five and Kiwis move into box seat

Henry Nicholls' unbeaten 119 in his return match helped New Zealand establish a 352-run lead over England with seven wickets still in hand at stumps on day three of the second Test in London.

Nicholls, in for the retired Kane Williamson, picked up from where his Test career left off a year ago, the 34-year-old making it hundreds in consecutive matches and combining with Rachin Ravindra (76) to add 161 in 33.3 overs as the Kiwis moved to 3-252.

After Matt Henry began the day with three more wickets in three overs to complete a five-wicket haul, the visitors endured a frustrating period, as England's 10th-wicket pair Matthew Fisher (50no) and debutant Sonny Baker (four) put on 53 across an 80-minute stand to guide their side to 291 – a deficit of 100 on the first innings.

Matt Henry ends England’s resistance as New Zealand complete second Test rout

New Zealand made very short work of claiming the five England wickets required to secure victory in the second Test on Sunday.

Matt Henry removed four England batters, including Joe Root for 77, in a ferocious 25-minute spell at the Oval. The hosts began the day on 182-5 but added just 10 runs for the first four wickets lost, slipping to 192-9 as the Black Caps showed no mercy.

Root had kept England’s faint hopes of salvaging the match alive with his stand of 75 on Saturday, but the interim captain was quickly trapped lbw by Henry when the final day began, having added only two further runs.

Drone footage shows how widespread the fire was, with buildings spanning the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach in the town of Bayahibe on fire, and thick black smoke billowing into the air.

The cause of the early-morning blaze is not yet known, but an initial investigation found the flames spread quickly due to wind conditions and the flammable thatched roofs on some buildings.

She swam about 52km for the challenge, nearly double her 27km goal, and raised more than $600.

Elite paddleboarder Charlie Verco has only seen one shark bigger than the one he saw on Saturday at Sydney’s Coogee beach.

The North Bondi athlete was training for July’s world championships in Hawaii on Saturday morning when he heard a swimmer shouting “shark”.

As he headed towards the area of water where about three people appeared close to a large grey shadow, several swimmers attempted to climb on to his 18-foot (5.5 metre) paddleboard.

Huge Madge call that ‘says it all’ about dire Broncos plight; Panthers’ shock title challenger

The Brisbane Broncos have moved one step closer to becoming the first premiership-winning team to miss out on the finals the following season since 2006.

But was the writing on the wall earlier in the season?

Meanwhile, the Canberra Raiders have gone from the hunter to the “hunted” after a shocking six months which could also see the minor premiers endure a dramatic fall from grace with the season hanging on by a thread.

The NRL’s heavyweights have fallen off a cliff. And only one is climbing back up

Within moments of Keano Kini chipping, chasing and shunting the reigning premiers into a fifth straight loss on Saturday night, the question pinged in from the rugby league ether via the group chat.

“Has an entire top four missed the finals the following season?″⁣

And even with the Storm, Broncos, Raiders and Bulldogs sitting between positions 11 and 14 on the NRL ladder after mostly miserable starts to 2026, odds-on, this won’t be the year either.

The NRL’s bewildering insistence on awarding two points for a bye makes a liar of the ladder.

Take those two-point gifts away for a true mid-season snapshot and Melbourne rank behind the eighth-placed Sharks by one win.

The government expects to recoup $36.2bn by curbing the national disability insurance scheme’s growth over the next four years as it looks to return to the NDIS’s “original purpose” of supporting people with “significant and permanent disability”.

The treasurer, Jim Chalmers, said the budget’s savings package amounted to genuine economic reform, beyond the “usual nips and tucks”.

Federal budget 2026: NDIS legislation takes priority over tax changes as Labor chases savings

Savings measures in Tuesday’s federal budget, including a $37.8 billion cut to the runaway cost of the NDIS, will help shave $45 billion from the cumulative deficit over the next five years, but a return to surplus is expected to be still at least a decade away.

The NDIS cut is by far the largest savings measure in the budget, contributing well over half the $63.8 billion total savings measures the government will claim by 2029-30 when it releases the budget on Tuesday night.
