Hugo Ekitike: Liverpool striker's injury 'looks really bad', says Arne Slot

Liverpool boss Arne Slot says Hugo Ekitike's injury "looks really bad" after the France striker was taken off on a stretcher during Tuesday's Champions League loss to Paris St-Germain.

Ekitike went down off the ball 30 minutes into the quarter-final second leg, which the Reds lost 2-0 on the night and 4-0 on aggregate.

He was seen holding his ankle and was visibly in discomfort before being taken off the pitch.

"Hugo looks really bad but it is difficult to say how bad," Slot said after the game.

"Let's see. It doesn't look good, that is clear. I didn't see him at half-time and after the game he was already home. I have not spoken to him yet."

Hugo Ekitike has handed a major injury worry to Liverpool and France after he was forced off in the first half of his club's Champions League quarterfinal loss to Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday.

The France striker appeared to hurt his right ankle when he slipped in the 27th minute of the second-leg match at Anfield.

"It doesn't look good," Liverpool coach Arne Slot said after the 2-0 defeat, which sealed a 4-0 aggregate victory for PSG. "It looks really bad, but it's difficult for me to say how bad. Tomorrow we will investigate further."

In the first half, Nuno Mendes was forced off with a problem and was subsequently replaced by Lucas Hernández.

Early in the second half, Désiré Doué was next to succumb to injury after a collision with Dominik Szoboszlai and he was eventually replaced by fellow Frenchman Bradley Barcola.

There will be concern among those watching on in France as Liverpool striker Hugo Ekitike was also stretchered off in the first half with what appeared to be an achilles injury.

Life after Daly Cherry-Evans doesn’t look so bad after all.

Young halves pairing Joey Walsh and Onitoni Large have given the Manly faithful reason to be excited for the years to come after orchestrating a shock 33-18 pre-season trial win over the Warriors.

The promising duo didn’t shirk their responsibilities in their maiden senior game together, and looked equally adept defensively as they did with ball in hand.

Big opportunity today for club's next wave of young players

Today’s first Preseason Challenge outing against Manly Warringah is as much about the One New Zealand Warriors’ future as it is about the present.

While a number of seasoned first graders will be on show at McLean Park in Napier, there’ll be special interest in how the club’s new wave of talent performs.

This time last year hooker Sam Healey, prop Tanner Stowers-Smith and back rower Eddie Ieremia-Toeava hadn’t made their NRL debuts when they lined up in the Warriors’ first trial against Cronulla Sutherland.

Now they start the 2026 season as bona fide first graders, Healey debuting in round nine last year, Stowers-Smith in round 11 and Ieremia-Toeava in round 22; Healey went on to make seven appearances, Stowers-Smith 13 and Ieremia-Toeava five.

AFCON 2025 – Hugo Broos encourages Bafana Bafana not to fear Salah, Marmoush

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has encouraged his players not to overthink the threat posed by Egypt's quality individual players, such as Liverpool's Mohamed Salah and Manchester City's Omar Marmoush in their clash in Agadir on Friday.

South Africa's 2-1 win over Angola on Monday demonstrated how in Broos' Bafana, fullbacks often bomb forward and even centre-backs such as Mbekezeli Mbokazi go on marauding runs.

Left-back Aubrey Modiba put in a fantastic offensive shift, adding bodies to the attack down his flank. Now, Broos faces the difficult task of potentially having to prepare for Salah on the same side of the pitch. The Belgian warned against overthinking the quality of individual Egypt players.

Afcon roundup: Mohamed Salah strikes again as 10-man Egypt hold off South Africa

Mohamed Salah scored a first-half penalty as 10-man Egypt defeated South Africa 1-0 in their Africa Cup of Nations Group B clash in Agadir on Friday to become the first team into the knockout stages of the competition.

Egypt have six points from their opening two games and cannot finish outside of the top two in the group. South Africa have three points from their two games, while Zimbabwe and Angola have one each after they drew 1-1 earlier in the day.

Salah won the penalty when he was clipped in the face by South Africa defender Khuliso Mudau as they tussled for the ball in the box, and stepped up to easily convert for his second goal of the tournament.
