Rethinking the Relationship between God, Humanity, and the Earth

In 2009, the United Nations General Assembly designated April 22 as “International Mother Earth Day” through Resolution A/RES/63/278. This designation was not merely symbolic; it was a response to a growing global concern that environmental degradation had become one of the defining challenges of the 21st century. In its official framing, the United Nations emphasizes that the Earth and its ecosystems constitute our “common home,” and that their protection is essential not only for human survival but also for intergenerational justice (see the official UN page on this observance).

Reports from UN-affiliated bodies illustrate the scale of the crisis. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), approximately 10 million hectares of forest are lost each year, undermining biodiversity and disrupting vital ecological cycles. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) reports that more than 11 million tons of plastic enter the oceans annually, a figure projected to increase dramatically if current trends continue. Meanwhile, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) warns that around one million species are at risk of extinction. These are not merely scientific data points; they are indicators of a profound disruption in the relationship between humanity and the natural world.

When was the first Earth Day? Holiday origins, 2026 date, activities

Earth is humanity's home for at least 300,000 years and has given us so much — green grass, sunny skies, breathtaking sunsets, beautiful snow and so much more — so why not celebrate it by taking one day to make it a better, healthier place?

When you were younger, you may have learned that April 22 is Earth Day. For more than 50 years, Earth Day has been about celebrating our planet and its glory, promoting environmental protection, and demonstrating the importance of planetary health.

Here's what to know about Earth's special day and what it means to be environmentally active.

Earth Day occurs on the same day every year on April 22. This year, April 22 is a Wednesday.

The History of Earth Day—and Why It Still Matters

From our collaborating partner Living on Earth, public radio’s environmental news magazine, an interview by host Steve Curwood with environmental historian Adam Rome.

Earth Day was born in 1970 during a moment of human solidarity in troubled times. Violent Vietnam war protests, burning Black communities and girdles and bras publicly trashed by feminists spoke of great social divides.

The Artemis II mission is set to launch with four astronauts on board.

This will be the first mission to the moon in 53 years and will include a woman, person of colour and non-US citizen in its crew.

NASA has the first six days of April to launch Artemis II before standing down until the end of the month.

NASA has begun the countdown for humanity's first launch to the moon in 53 years.

The 32-storey Space Launch System rocket is poised to blast off early Thursday morning with four astronauts.

Who are the Artemis II astronauts heading to the Moon?

Four astronauts are about to become the most closely watched crew since Apollo.

They will be the first to orbit the moon for more than 50 years, testing the path back for the next generation.

The crew includes three Nasa astronauts – Commander Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover and Christina Koch – along with Jeremy Hansen of the Canadian Space Agency.

Not only are they accomplished pilots, engineers and scientists, they are also spouses and parents balancing a heroic adventure against the risks they and their loved ones will face.

Reid Wiseman is a US Navy test pilot turned astronaut, who spent six months on the International Space Station in 2014 as a flight engineer on Expedition 40. Wiseman says he has a lifelong love of flying, but on the ground he's afraid of heights.

NASA’s Artemis II Launch Mission Countdown Begins

The countdown for NASA’s Artemis II test flight is underway at the agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, with members of the launch team arriving at their consoles inside the Rocco Petrone Launch Control Center. The onsite countdown clock started ticking down at 4:44 p.m. EDT to a targeted launch time of 6:24 p.m. on Wednesday, April 1. Artemis II is the first crewed launch of NASA’s SLS (Space Launch System) rocket and Orion spacecraft.

With countdown officially underway, engineers are powering up flight hardware, checking communication links, and preparing the rocket’s cryogenic systems for the precise fueling sequence required to load hundreds of thousands of gallons of super-cooled liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen. At Launch Pad 39B, teams will begin filling the sound suppression system’s massive tank with water, which will unleash a protective deluge at liftoff to shield the vehicle from the roar of its own engines.

The colourful world-building in French illustrator and director Ugo Bienvenu's delightful sci-fi and coming-of-age animation is otherworldly yet timely. Ten-year-old Arco is from the year 3000, a peaceful future where humanity lives among the clouds while Earth slowly heals below.

Impatient and mischievous, he swipes his sister's rainbow time-travel suit and accidentally travels back to 2075, a world battered by constant fires, rain and ferocious winds and homes shelter beneath protective bubbles — a prediction for our future?

Ryan Gosling on blending humour and sci-fi in new film Project Hail Mary

Humour and science fiction may not seem obvious bedfellows but a history of cinema will tell you different. Think Spaceballs, Mars Attacks! and Everything Everwhere All At Once to name but a few. And now Ryan Gosling is hopping on board.

The 45-year-old is both the lead actor and producer of Project Hail Mary, a space adventure film based on the 2021 Andy Weir novel of the same name.

While Gosling has showcased his comedy chops in films such as Barbie and Nice Guys, he tells the BBC he's "always struggled as an actor because I would want to bring humour to something" but has found opportunities to be funny limited with some projects.
