According to a report by Cricbuzz, the ICC had initially planned to begin the 2027 ODI World Cup on October 8. However, the tournament could now get underway on October 2, which coincides with Gandhi Jayanti, marking Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary. If the proposed change goes ahead, warm-up matches would likely have to begin in late September. The World Cup will feature 14 teams and will be hosted across 12 venues in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. The tournament is expected to conclude with the final on November 21.

ICC plans 2027 Cricket World Cup start on Gandhi Jayanti October 2 in Africa

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is working on a meaningful start date for the 2027 Men’s ODI World Cup. Reports indicate the tournament in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia could begin on 2 October 2027, which is Gandhi Jayanti.

This date would mark the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and pay tribute to a leader known for peace and non-violence. Gandhi spent 21 years in South Africa, a period that shaped his ideas. Linking the World Cup opening to this day carries extra weight because the event returns to the continent after more than two decades.

Earlier plans pointed to an 8 October start after warm-up games in the first week of the month. Those warm-ups are now expected to shift earlier so the main tournament can open on 2 October. The final remains scheduled for 21 November. That gives the 14-team competition roughly 50 days of action.

Capsey and Knight’s mighty partnership guides England to T20 series win over India

England pulled off a statement run chase against India on Tuesday evening at Taunton, reaching their target of 181 with nine balls to spare thanks to a brilliant 137-run partnership from 76 balls between Alice Capsey and Heather Knight.

This was Englandâs highest successful T20 international run-chase in eight years and it could not have been more perfectly timed, providing the perfect confidence boost 10 days out from their World Cup opener against Sri Lanka on 12 June.

Charlotte Edwards, the head coach, said: âAs games go, I donât think it could have gone any more perfectly for us. We had to chase a big total playing against one of the best teams in the world, and we did it convincingly.â

New troubles are knocking at the door for Pakistan, as amid the T20 World Cup qualification scenario not going their way, one of the key batters has been subjected to punishment for breaching the ICC code of conduct.

The Pakistan Cricket Board is anyway going through a rough patch, after their Men's team made an awful start to their Super-8 campaign in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup. They qualified for the Super-8 stage after having defeated the Netherlands, USA and Namibia, but have not won against any of the major forces.

Pakistan's group-stage defeat came against rivals India. They had lost the game by a humiliating margin of 61 runs, and then, coming into the Super-8, they lost the match to England in their second game. The first game against New Zealand was abandoned without a single ball being bowled.

The BCB and the ICC have not yet reached a resolution over Bangladesh's refusal to play their 2026 T20 World Cup matches in India due to security concerns, despite the tournament starting in three weeks time.

The two parties had a meeting on Saturday after which the BCB issued a statement saying they will "continue engaging in constructive dialogue on this matter". The 2026 T20 World Cup, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, is scheduled to begin on February 7.

"During the discussions, the BCB reiterated its formal request to the ICC to relocate Bangladesh's matches to Sri Lanka," the board said in a statement. "The Board also shared the Bangladesh government's views and concerns on safety and security of the team, Bangladeshi fans, media and other stakeholders.
