    MIAMI — What began with an "irrational belief," Indiana center Pat Coogan said, ended with the Hoosiers' first football national championship on Monday, and perhaps, a new world order in the typically staid sport of college football.

    Coach Curt Cignetti called Indiana's championship a "paradigm shift," one that opens the door to any program willing to invest to climb to the top of the sport, just as the Hoosiers did.

    "People can cling to an old way of thinking, categorizing teams as this or that or conferences as this or that," Cignetti said, "or they can adjust to the new world, the shift in the power dynamic in college football today."

    One of the greatest sports stories was completed on Monday night as Indiana defeated Miami 27-21 to capture the program’s first College Football Playoff national championship, all while capping an unforgettable 2025 season with a perfect 16-0 record.

    The win didn’t come easily for the Hoosiers as the Hurricanes closed the gap twice in the second half, even pulling within three with just over six and a half minutes left in the fourth quarter.

    The Hurricanes marched down the field 91 yards to score off a 22-yard touchdown pass by Carson Beck to cut it to a 24-21 game, but the Hoosiers managed to give themselves some breathing room with a field goal on the ensuing drive.

    Thursday's Rose Bowl Game Presented by Prudential will see No. 1-ranked Indiana face No. 9 Alabama in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals, a matchup that would have been nearly impossible to predict a decade ago.

    Indiana enters the game with a 13-0 record, while Alabama is 11-3 after defeating No. 8-seeded Oklahoma on the road in the first round.

    The Hoosiers haven't played since Dec. 6 — a 13-10 Big Ten Championship victory over then-No. 1-ranked Ohio State. It marked the program's first victory over an AP No. 1 team and outright conference championship since 1945. A week later, Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza won the Heisman Trophy, becoming the first Hoosier to win the award, which was created in 1935.
